Bailout

Urban Decay Bailout On the Run Mini Eyeshadow Palette ($25.00 for 0.16 oz.) is a new, limited edition neutral palette with a pop of purple. There are five shades in the palette that have been released before–Skimp, Bailout, Faith, Chopper, and Vice–while the rest are new. I found the formula used across the palette to feel drier, dustier, and/or thinner compared the more recent, highly-rated palettes, like the Born to Run palette.

Skimp

Skimp is a soft, peacy beige with a satin sheen. It had full color payoff that applied evenly to bare skin and blended out easily along the edges. I had some trouble with fallout as it was more powdery in texture, so as I blended it out, some of the powder shifted beyond where I wanted it. The color stayed on well for seven and a half hours on me.

Formula Overview

$19.00/0.05 oz. - $380.00 Per Ounce

The formula is typically described as "high-pigment" that "stays on your lids" and goes on "seamlessly." Their permanent range has a lot of fantastic shades in it, and many of them are pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing. Some of their matte are real workhorse kind of shades with soft, smooth, silky, and blendable textures, while their shimmers and pearly shades are very rich in payoff and apply beautifully to the lid. They wear between seven and nine hours on me, depending on the shade and finish.

Bailout

Bailout is a soft, peachy-orange with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque pigmentation with a soft, lightly dusty texture that felt a little drier and thinner to me, so it seemed to sheer out when used on its own. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me before fading noticeably.

Faith

Faith is a medium brown with soft, warm undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was excellent, while the eyeshadow had a more powdery texture that seemed on the drier, thinner side. I expect blending to go well but found that it applied unevenly, darkening in some places more than others, so it ended up being much more difficult to diffuse along the edges. It wore nicely for seven and a half hours before I noticed some fading.

Rebound

Rebound is a deep brown with subtle, warm undertones and a satin finish. It was richly pigmented with a soft, velvety consistency that was moderately powdery and had some fallout during application (even after I tapped off excess prior to applying). This shade stayed on well for seven and a half hours on me before fading a bit.

Chopper

Chopper is a medium brown with warmer undertones and flecks of silver glitter. It had semi-sheer color coverage, which was buildable to semi-opaque pigmentation with two three presses, though there was a fair amount of fallout. If I used it with a dampened brush, it was more pigmented and had less fallout but still was much weaker than I recall Chopper being (as it’s been released before). It lasted for seven hours and had some fallout over time.

Pickup

Pickup is a pale, silvery lavender with cool undertones and flecks of larger sparkle and lots of shine. It had a more loosely pressed consistency that applied best with fingertips or a dampened brush, but it was workable as a brightening/layering shade used with a flat, synthetic brush (used dry), though there was fallout. It had medium coverage, and it was designed to be layered so sheerness was as expected.

Vice

Vice is a medium-dark purple with subtle, cool undertones and a frosted sheen. The color coverage was opaque in a single layer, while the consistency was denser, firmer, but thinner than the last version of Vice I have. The color didn’t apply as well to bare skin as I felt like the color faded shortly after I applied it, and the shimmer seemed less prominent. After that initial fade, it started to fade more noticeably after seven hours of wear.

This could have been a perfect travel palette because of its size (and for every day too, of course), had the quality been more consistent. Christine, how would you say the version of Chopper in this one compares to the one in Naked 2 (that palette got a high rating so I’m guessing the previous version of Chopper was better but that palette dates from the time before you gave individual ratings to each of the shadows, I think).

Deborah S. Avatar

I really love my BTR palette and after having used it everyday for 5 weeks, I can say that it is an exceptional palette for travel. I found it to be very versatile and the quality was great. Not only is this not the greatest quality, it lacks much imagination. When you are releasing a palette of shades that have all been seen before it is rather deceptive to have poorer performing shadows in the smaller palette. People who own the original iteration are going to assume that the quality is the same and that just isn’t the case here.

Lauren Avatar

Well this is disappointing. I’ve had chopper in the UD Revolver palette and Naked 2 and loved it both times. To hear that this one is not of the usual quality makes me sad. I know that some brands have less than stellar mini palettes that don’t hold a candle to their full sizes, but was not expecting UD would fall into that trap. I do have their mini four shadow Urban Vices and those perform lovely. Dang it UD… now I’m second guessing if I want to buy this palette. I won’t use all the colors in Born to Run, but I wouldn’t use a subpar mini palette either.

Zelda Avatar

Christine, any thoughts on why Urban Decay (or any other makeup company) switches their formula? There are some great UD shadows, they obviously have some great formulas, why not stick with them? Is there really that much difference in cost? Is it worth the damage to the brand?

Holly Miller Avatar

Too bad. I love these little cardboard packages. I’m always reorganizing the shadows in my palettes, and this style makes it easy. I’ve learned I’m never happy with something that isn’t mostly A’s in your rating system, so it’s a pass for me.
