Tom Ford Smoky Quartz Eye Color Creme Quad Review & Swatches
Smoky Quartz
Tom Ford Beauty Smoky Quartz Eye Color Crème Eyeshadow Quad ($89.00 for 0.31 oz.) is a new, warmer-toned quad that features a new cream-powder eyeshadow formula, which I had a really stellar experience working with. All four eyeshadows were pigmented, blendable, and longer-wearing, but the magic was in how seamless and “melted” they looked on my skin.

Smoky Quartz #1
Smoky Quartz #1 is a light, yellowy-brown with moderated, warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. It wasn’t a fully flat matte, but it didn’t really have shimmer to it–the finish was “skin like.” The texture was denser to the touch and felt more cream-like, but in practice, as soon as I put my brush to it, the product picked up like a powder and applied like one with full opacity and easy blending. It wore well for nine hours before showing signs of fading.

Formula Overview

The new Creme finish is supposed use "lush emollients" for a "crease and flake-resistant finish" that is "long-wearing" and "one-swipe" in application. It feels like a cream-to-powder formula but with a ratio of more like 35% cream to 65% powder, as there was a more emollient feel by touch but a stiffer brush could produce a little kick up when swirled in the pan.
The magic was when the formula was applied to bare skin, though, as it "melted" in a way that made the finish appear more seamless and skin-like, smooth without emphasizing skin texture or lines. They applied just fine using typical eyeshadow brushes and application methods that I would have used for a traditional powder eyeshadow.
The pigmentation ranged from semi-opaque to opaque, depending on the shade, but most were buildable if they weren't fully opaque in "one swipe." I found the eyeshadow formula very easy to apply and blend out, too. They lasted between eight and nine hours on me before fading a bit.

Smoky Quartz #2
Smoky Quartz #2 is a light-medium, rosy brown with warm undertones and a satin finish. It had opaque color coverage paired with a smooth, cream-powder texture that performed more like a powder once I started to pick up product and blend it out on my skin, though it had the look of a cream as it “melted” on my skin. It stayed on well for nine hours before fading visibly.

Smoky Quartz #3
Smoky Quartz #3 is a richer, medium reddish-brown with warm undertones and a satin finish. The consistency was creamier to the touch than it seemed in practice, as one could get a bit of powderiness in the pan if a brush was swirled. It had opaque pigmentation that lasted well for nine hours before fading noticeably.

Smoky Quartz #4
Smoky Quartz #4 is an inky, deep red-brown with subtle, warm undertones and a satin finish. The eyeshadow had incredibly high color payoff, so one should go easier and build up if uncomfortable working with that level of payoff. The texture was soft, smooth, and blendable with a “melted” appearance on my skin. It wore well for nine hours before showing signs of fading.

This quad certainly presents as one amazing gem! Puts me in mind of a much pared down ND Biba, but with one super rich chocolate brown that Biba doesn’t have.
I don’t know whether I would call this one ‘Smokey” but it is a well co-ordinated quad with a perfect formula and finishes. True, all of the shades are dupable, but at least you are getting value for your money with this one.
Agree with you Genevieve!
Great quality, scary price-tag but also too warm for me (good thing, because of the scary price tag).
Looks like a great quality quad, but made up of fairly dupable shades for me and out of my budget!
This is a beautifully put-together color story and the formula looks stunning. If it was MY color story I would enjoy picking it up as a special, luxurious treat.
I don’t own any Tom Ford products and don’t usually gravitate to them but this is really beautiful.
Christine – Is the application rating on color #1 correct? 0.9? I’m tying to understand…was the low mark related to the pickup being similar to that of a powder? Or the density?
