Tom Ford Night Sky (01) Cream and Powder Eye Color ($66.00 for 0.31 oz.) includes a full-sized powder eyeshadow and full-sized cream eyeshadow housed in a two-tiered component. They worked well together, but both were weaker on their own and less impressive as a result. The cream eyeshadow was hard to apply evenly; the darker color paired with greater slip yielded sheerer, streakier results, but the formula is buildable and opaque in two layers, so it can work. I just don’t think it’s as good as past iterations of the cream eyeshadow formula (which I’m normally a huge fan of).

Also, surprised to see this product already increase by $6 since the last release!

Night Sky (Powder) is a muted, blackened blue with hints of gray and multi-colored shimmer (primarily violet, blue, and aquamarine) over a mostly matte base. The texture was soft, smooth, and thinner than most Tom Ford eyeshadows that I’ve come across. It had good color payoff, but it was prone to sheering out a bit in practice, so it is a shade better applied over the cream eyeshadow or over a base and patted on, rather than swept on, if you want to maintain intensity. The color lasted for eight hours on me. NARS Giove (P, $29.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Too Faced De La Mer (PiP, $16.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Urban Decay Heroine (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery, cooler (85% similar). bareMinerals Shaken Not Stirred (P, ) is darker (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Night Sky (Cream) is a blackened navy blue with fine shimmer that gives it a pearly sheen. It was very pigmented, but it was also quite emollient, yet thick, which made it apply with more semi-opaque coverage. I was able to layer to get totally opaque coverage, but it was very difficult to do in just one stroke. The color looked streaky without a second layer as well. Once it dried down, the color didn’t budge or fade for twelve hours. Bobbi Brown Blue Onyx (LE, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). MAC Aphrodisiatic (LE, $25.00) is more shimmery, lighter (95% similar). NARS Glenan (P, $28.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). MAC Thru the Night (DC, $21.00) is lighter (95% similar). MAC Shop & Drop (LE, $17.00)(95% similar). MAC Imaginary (DC, $23.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). MAC No Taboos (LE, $22.00) is more shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Giorgio Armani Minuit (02) (DC, $39.00) is lighter (90% similar). NARS Ubangi (P, $25.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Too Faced De La Mer (PiP, $16.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). Sydney Grace Moonlit Kingdom (PiP, $6.25) is more shimmery, lighter, warmer (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty The Parisienne #2 (LE, ) is lighter (90% similar). Pat McGrath Underworld (PiP, $25.00) is lighter (90% similar). NABLA Cosmetics Baltic (P, $8.00) is lighter (85% similar). NARS Dark Rite (P, $24.00) is lighter (85% similar). bareMinerals Climax (P, ) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). Burberry Midnight Blue (DC, $29.00) is lighter (85% similar). Milani Bella Navy (09) (P, $4.49) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). Giorgio Armani Midnight (01) (P, $36.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). NARS Giove (P, $29.00) is warmer (85% similar). Hmm. Well, I have this already. I wonder what’s up with the decrease in quality & increase in price?! I haven’t worn mine yet. But, I surely like the layered look better. I feel a slight slip in some of TF ‘s products. I also bought the liner and both the tips mascaras. The liner is gorgeous. Blue mascara is good. But, the gold- I think I’m going to have to return. Definetely not TF quality. Either that or I’m doing something wrong with it! Lol!

I will.:)
Well, how do I explain?. It doesn’t work like the blue at all. The blue looks awesome on the bottom lashes as well as tips. I tried both with the gold too. It needs a couple of coats on the bottom lashes. For tips, you need 2 coats also but then it’s almost too thick. One coat – you can’t see it, two-flakes ,clumps. I’m going to try it again before I finally decide I guess or wait to see if anyone else is experiencing this.I’m wondering if I’m applying wrong. I was bummed when I didn’t snag the purple and teal mascaras. But, $44 for colored mascara. It should be good stuff or its going to sit unused and that’s $44 in the garbage basically. Did you get the mascaras?

Nicole Avatar

I tried it again this morning before I put on my regular makeup. I just barely hit my lashes with the wand vertical. I think it may work that way and just be a little glint effect. I’m going to try it out again over regular mascara. I’ll report back. 🙂

Hi update on the Bunished Gold tips mascara. Sorry for the delay. Personally- I couldn’t love it enough for $44. If it was something that would last, I probably would have kept it. It just is not my thing. So, I will be sending it back. The blue is really subtle, but flattering though. I really like that one along with the eyeliner.

Nicole Avatar

Hey Alice. I’m still playing around with it. I described the problems I was having with it to Christine above. I’m going to try it again for sure. I may have been thinking it would be the same intensity as the blue.

Hey Alice, Sorry for the delay on this! I decided to return the Gold tips TF mascara. Just didn’t feel it was for me. You may want to check it out in person if you can. You may like it. The quality is there and you can leave it low key or amp it up, wear it on the tips or full lashes(upper or lower). Karen from Makeup and Beauty Blog did a post on Fri., Nov.6. It actually may have been from Thur. & I watched it on Fri. But, she has it on full upper lashes if you wan to see it in action. Hope that helps!

Bummer- Pink Haze and Escapade are among my all time favorites, sad to see the quality decline. Seems like that happens a lot these days, and it is really aggravating. I imagine Tom Ford sitting by his pool, petting a small silky dog and saying ‘Increase the price! And make those jars a little smaller. Ease up on the QC. And don’t make eye contact with me!’

Totally agreed with you on this. I like mine a lot. But there are enough amazing dupes in my collection that overshadow it. Definitely not up to par with past iterations, but still a lovely mix. The level of slip felt more akin to Charlotte Tilbury’s cream formula, which while similar (since she worked on Tom Ford’s) I don’t like as much as the classic Ford iteration since it’s too slippery. Plus, I was surprised at the extra dollars. It’s nice, but I think other brands have this color combo covered at better values. But I also had more success with layering the two as you did (both ways, actually. I tried it powder first and powder second and the powder certainly helps rude the slip of the cream here. On my other TF duos, I feel completely confident wearing the cream without setting it with the powder but this one needs the powder to work to its fullest potential.

I have this and I am in love with it. I love navy blues. I get compliments every time I wear this. I layer the cream then the powder all over the lid and then I do either a burgundy or brown in the crease. You only need the tiniest amount of the cream or you will overdo it.

Have this and love these duos, but find it much sketchier to apply than others. It’s tricky.

I really did not need this duo, could have settled for GA eye tint in Minuit 02 with the Colour Pop (which I have both) on top.

Anyhow, rocking out a dark blue eye a lot lately after whining that I couldn’t carry it off…not true..so multiple choices are always good to have in stash. This isn’t bad, just not stellar.

Exactly! Spring 2015 is so perfect and I was expecting major transfer issues with my hooded lids on that one. Was really pleasantly surprised given the darker colour. This one, while it didn’t gunk up my crease, certainly transferred up and over the hood. After I applied the cream base, I noticed immediately it was patchier and felt more emolient.. it didn’t feel like it was going to set so I packed on a bit more powder on top and used a really matte transition shade just above my crease which helped. Over the course of the day it mostly held up but certainly did not set as well as some of the predecessors.

The cream and powder look lovely when applied together. That’s how I usually wear the cream and powder eye colour duos, paired together. Just ordered this holiday edition duo from Holt’s…hope it works on me. It’s a bit dark for an everyday eye look but I can see it being a good fit for a night out or special occasions/parties. The sparkles in the powder eyeshadow are just calling out to me =)

This *was* going to finally, perhaps be the “one” I was seriously considering buying, but not with these aforementioned issues at that steep price point.
What a shame, because this could’ve made one kick-a** deep blue smokey eye! Although, I do still really love the powder component of it.

Veronica Avatar

No need to apologize – that’s actually more reasonable than if you had actually paid for it to arrive like that, haha. Tom Ford gets a pass this time.

Dani Avatar

Wow, the name is just spot on! By looking at the color itself I can only think of a night sky…it’s beautiful but I am not a fan of this format, powder in the lid and cream in a plastic jar. That’s why I didn’t buy any of these. I only collected all the cream color that come in a glass jar. And I am sorry to see the quality down and price up though 🙁

Trish Avatar

I’m really disappointed in this collection and that has never happened before in a TF release for me. It pains me to pass this up, but with so many great items available from other brands I’m not going to feel bad that I don’t own this.
