Tom Ford Cala di Volpe Moisturecore Lip Color
Tom Ford Moisturecore Lip Color ($55.00 for 0.09 oz.) is supposed to have two formulas in one. The center is described as a “liquid core” that “provides luxurious moisture” while the exterior is hydrating, has golden pearl, and yields a “soft veil of lightweight color that lasts for hours.” The formula is lightweight, moderately emollient, and somewhat hydrating. It didn’t have great longevity as wear ranged from two to four hours depending on the shade. They don’t really have a “soft veil” of color, as most of them are fairly pigmented. It is vanilla-scented with no discernible taste. In general, the formula is a little heavier but has noticeably less shine than the also-new Ultra-Rich Lip Colors.
Tom Ford Cala di Volpe Moisturecore Lip Color ($55.00 for 0.09 oz.) is a medium-dark, caramel brown with warm, yellow and orange tones and fine golden copper shimmer. It had more of a frosted finish, but the shimmer was fine enough that it wasn’t noticeable as a textural element. It wore well for three and a half hours, was lightly hydrating, and was comfortable to wear overall. Bobbi Brown Sunset Beach (LE, $23.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). MAC Glamour Era (P, $25.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). Chanel Synopsis (P, $37.00) is darker (90% similar). Bite Beauty Marzipan (DC, $28.00) is less shimmery, darker, more muted (85% similar). Tom Ford Carriacou Moisturecore Lip Color ($55.00 for 0.09 oz.) is a light-medium, pinky-coral with warm undertones and a soft, luminous sheen. It had mostly opaque coverage (a lot more than a veil!) with a creamy, light-medium-weight consistency that applied evenly but pulled a bit into lip lines. It wasn’t too noticeable from afar, just in the close-up shot. The formula had a fair amount of slip and only wore for three hours on me. It was lightly hydrating while worn. Tarte Mimosa (LE, $16.00) is warmer (90% similar). Bite Beauty Café (DC, $24.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Estee Lauder Mischievous Rose (P, $30.00) is lighter (90% similar). Tom Ford Mustique Moisturecore Lip Color ($55.00 for 0.09 oz.) is a light-medium pink with warm undertones and a soft shine. It had semi-sheer color payoff with a very creamy consistency that was difficult to apply evenly–it was streaky, somewhat uneven, and pulled into lip lines while worn. The color lasted for two and a half hours. Wet 'n' Wild A Short Affair (P, $0.99) is more shimmery, darker (95% similar). MAC Catty (LE, $19.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). Tom did a sheerer lipstick a number of years back and I still love it.. a colour called Bare if I am not mistaken which is a beautiful beige nude. The only one here I am interested in is Mustique, but I have a handful of the dupes which are definitely close enough. I’m passing on this collection. Shocks me a bit the say that, but much of it includes repromos with many of the lip colours mimicking previous purchases from regular line or lips and boys collections. No love for Tom today. 😛
The wallet needs a break between Tom Ford collections, especially as they have gotten rather massive lately!
Pipa is the color I was initially attracted to but the shimmer, even if subtle, doesn’t please me
I think these will all be a skip then!
Pipa is soooo pretty! I wonder how it would do on my quite pigmented lips though.
I’m going to guess that your natural lip color will impact it for sure!
Yeah, I would need to try it on for sure.
Cala de Volpe is pretty, and the rest are meh, but for $55, these need to be stunning. IDK, these swatches remind me of the Revlon Lip Butters. At this price point, I would rather go with a Guerlain Rouge G. Or maybe 2 of the dupes and still have change left over
Totally understand!
Pipa is so pretty! AND, is a warm lip color that I just might be able to pull off! I was feeling disappointed about Mustique, but I think it’s probably too light for me anyway.
Pipa seems to be the fave!
I ordered Mustique this morning off Sephora. I am still debating getting Carriacou, it looks so nice on you Christine.
Thank you, Deidre!
Oh wow! Pipa looks different on you than me! I may have layered too much though. These are pretty mush. One has to be gentle I discovered. I’ll give mine another go . I’m glad I didn’t order Mustique which was my first choice. I really like the formula. I’m hoping to get a hold of at least one more. I’m waiting to see how Ortrando does. But, I love Cala Di Volpe and Carricou. Gosh, the price hurts. I really wish TF would add this to the permanent line. But, I think I say that about all the LE items.
I wonder if maybe more of the center/exterior came through for you than me? That could be why!
Maybe the exterior because it looked almost metallic or frost like.
Pipa was instantly my favorite, the color reminds me of my current obsession – Chanel’s Desinvolte. (Sure enough, Desinvolte is listed as a 90% dupe) 🙂
Money saved 🙂
So funny that Chanel is the “bargain brand”! I really like the look of Pipa, but wouldn’t mind saving twenty bucks. Decisions, decisions…
Not really impressed. Finally some TF lippies I don’t have fret over!
Phew!
Pipa and Cala de Volpe are just so lush looking! I love a good moisturizing, hydrating lipstick going into the dry, hot part of the year, but I’m still not comfortable pulling the trigger on a $55 lipstick yet. Even though last year I had no problem nabbing an $85 eye cream or a $100+ TF perfume? I would if I didn’t have such a massive amount of lipsticks to use up. But my big drawback is that knowing me…it would likely spoil before I got to use it ALL up! Who knows, perhaps in May?
All about utility, I think. Plus, you can very readily get a good lipstick for under $20. Lipstick is one category that (IMO) is easy to work with on a budget and not miss out.
This is definitely true! I pretty much have a weird $37 mental limit that I have yet to go over. Not yet, anyway! I did see a luscious dupe that you listed above for Cala de Volpe in MAC tonight: Mineralize Glamour Era! I may need to back for that….?
Cala di Volpe and Pipa are such pretty shades!
They are!
These look pretty enough, but for the price and prestige, I think the performance falls short.
I hear you, CeeBee! They didn’t leave me super excited either.
I actually liked the colors, all of them. I liked the finish and they weren’t chalky. Unfortunately, I will never sever spend $55.00 for a tube of lipstick. Unless, of course, inflation makes $55.00 become $30.00 or less.
Great review- thanks! You are looking exceptionally pretty lately, BTW. ( I mean, you always look great and pull together interesting looks with the products you review, but lately you’ve been looking extra pretty!)
