Tarte Lips for Daze LipSurgence Set Review, Photos, Swatches
Tarte Lips for Daze LipSurgence Set
Tarte Lips for Daze LipSurgence Set ($34.00 for 0.50 oz.) includes five, full-sized of Tarte’s LipSurgence Lip Tints–three are matte and two are satins. According to Tarte, the LipSurgence Lip Tint is supposed to be hydrating, stain-like, and “silky, full coverage.” The major drawback to the formula is that it is rare they’re actually full coverage, and they’re somewhat hydrating to not hydrating at all (the regular Lip Tints are hydrating but the matte variations don’t add moisture for me). The value in the set is great, though, as all five are full-sized, and a full-sized one normally retails for $24 each — that makes this set worth $120! If you’re a fan of the formula or you’ve wanted to try one, it could be worth checking out.
Haze is described as a “peachy nude.” It’s a light-medium, pink-tinged peach with a mostly matte finish. It had sheer color coverage that went on evenly, but this shade did seem to gather in the lips as it wore away. I was only able to get two and a half hours of wear out of this one, and it was neither drying nor hydrating.
Too Faced Sorry Not Sorry (P, $22.00) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Kinda Sexy (P, $19.00) is darker (85% similar). Tom Ford Beauty First Time (09) (LE, $55.00) is lighter, brighter, more pigmented (90% similar). Too Faced When In Doubt (P, $22.00) is more pigmented, warmer (85% similar). Burberry Pink Apricot (301) (P, $35.00) is darker (85% similar). Sephora Peach Tart (LE, $14.00) is lighter, brighter, more pigmented (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Craze is described as a “raspberry.” It’s a soft, medium-dark pink-tinged coral with warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had sheer pigmentation with a soft but thin texture that felt very lightweight on. This shade wore for three hours on me and was a bit drying. Charlotte Tilbury Gracefully Pink (was Amazing Grace) (P, $37.00) is darker, brighter, warmer (85% similar). NARS Bonifacio (LE, $27.00) is cooler (85% similar). MAC La Vie En Rouge (LE, $19.00) is brighter, more pigmented (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Emblaze is described as a “cool crimson.” It’s a medium-dark, berry-red with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that covered evenly, but it was nowhere near “full coverage” as described. The texture is thin and a little clingy, though it glides on without tugging. The color lasted for four and a half hours and was neither drying nor hydrating. NARS Clash (LE, $27.00) is darker (85% similar). ColourPop Scrooge (LE, $6.50) is cooler (90% similar). Tatcha Magnolia Bloom (LE, $55.00) is less shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Makeup Geek Boss Lady (P, $12.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). Burberry Bright Poppy (311) (P, $35.00) is darker, more pigmented (85% similar). MAC Heaux (LE, $19.00) is darker, more pigmented (85% similar). MAC D for Danger (P, $19.00) is darker, more pigmented (90% similar). Makeup Geek Plain Jane (P, $12.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). Chanel Rouge Vie (58) (P, $45.00)(85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Glaze is described as a “rosy mocha.” It’s a muted, medium-dark pinky-plum with warm undertones and a soft shine. It had semi-sheer to semi-opaque color payoff with a noticeable translucency that let the natural lip color come through. It had a balm-like texture with some slip that was comfortable to wear and lasted for three hours. Bite Beauty Rosewood (DC, $28.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Richard (P, $36.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Strip (DC, $22.00) is cooler (90% similar). Guerlain Leather Blazer (013) (P, $32.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). MAC Finally Free (LE, $19.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Negligee (LE, $57.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Revlon Pink Truffle (DC, $7.49) is less pigmented, cooler (90% similar). Chanel Rose Violine (P, $37.00) is cooler (90% similar). Bite Beauty Cortado (DC, $24.00) is cooler (90% similar). Hourglass Inventor (P, $32.00) is darker (90% similar). Chanel Suzanne (438) (P, $37.00) is more shimmery, lighter (85% similar). Shiseido Red Queen (RD716) (DC, $28.00) is darker, brighter (90% similar). Guerlain Air Kiss (304) (P, $37.00) is more shimmery, darker, warmer (90% similar). Estee Lauder Bois de Rose (P, $32.00) is more muted (85% similar). Bobbi Brown Downtown Plum (DC, $37.00) is darker, less glossy (85% similar). Tarte Punch (LE, $16.00) is lighter, cooler (85% similar). YSL Mauve Cuir (86) (P, $38.00) is more shimmery, lighter, warmer (90% similar). Tarte TBT (P, $20.00) is lighter (90% similar). Estee Lauder Irresistible (P, $32.00) is lighter (85% similar). Bite Beauty Zin (DC, $24.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Praise is described as a “marsala.” It’s a muted, medium-dark warm-toned plum with a creamy finish. It had nearly opaque color payoff with a lightly creamy consistency that applied evenly and smoothly. This shade felt so different from the other four, and the resulting coverage and performance were better, too. It wore well for four and a half hours, and it was moderately hydrating. Tarte TBT (P, $20.00) is lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Strip (DC, $22.00) is cooler (95% similar). Buxom Hooligan (DC, $21.00) is glossier (90% similar). I bought a set probably 10 years ago and returned it – they weren’t hydrating, the colors didn’t match the descriptions, and some turned into different colors on my lips. Nothing I’ve seen since has convinced me to get another one, much less a set. I only like Praise, nice how it’s a dupes for HE lippies, but I don’t want to buy the entire set just that
Oh, no! That is too bad that you didn’t have a good experience with the formula! 🙁
I thought I was the only one who thought they changed colors. I bought a set maybe 3 years ago, and the two darker ones changed to a bright red after a while. I remember looking at the mirror thinking… This is not the same color I applied earlier lol…. Needless to say I haven’t bought any of the tarte lipsurgences again. ?
Easy pass for me. Praise is the only one that looks good and I have dupes for that one. Nice price though for a set if you would use them.
Yay for your wallet!
I had no intention of buying this set, but your swatches have changed my mind! For that price, I can deal with a B rating and frequent reapplication/limited opacity/questionable hydration.
Thank you again for your thorough reviews!
Always my pleasure, Heather! Enjoy!
Oh noooo! This didn’t perform wonderfully as a whole but I love lip crayon sets SO MUCH. I think I have to get it! HELP. haha
Awww!
It’s a shame about the formula. I think Haze is my favorite MLBB shade I’ve seen on you. It’s the exact effect I’ve been questing for in my own MLBB.
Thanks, Tinose!
I’ll be passing on this set. Praise is the only one that looks up-to-snuff. Overall, the quality doesn’t gibe with the Lipsurgence pencils I own. I have never found any of them to be full coverage.
It’s really weird to me that it’s described as full coverage, when it’s so… not.
Guess Praise really deserves just that, nice 🙂
Haha!
Praise has really great coverage!
It does!
really love your eye makeup in these photos!
Thanks, Olivia!
This would appear to be a good deal $ wise, the last 3 shades look like shades I’d actually wear, too. The problem is that those last 2 look way too much like each other once applied to the lips! Yet in their tubes, very different? I’ll stick to eventually grabbing up my very own tube of Guerlain Air Kiss instead as it seems to not only be a close dupe of both, but superior quality as well.
Air Kiss <3
These are all too similar! I wish they threw in a couple different colors. Maybe those berry-plums they are always pushing? But what a great value!
A deeper shade would have been great!
Christine, you are always so positive, responding to me Negative Nancy comments.
🙂
appreciate the review! definitely good value here but decided on the mini set instead…prefer to use these for travel and the variety is better for me since I almost never get through a full size lip product anymore!
My pleasure, Beka! 🙂
I have used Tartes lipsurgence colors in the past and didn’t like any of the colors or textures. They were drying, color was not long lasting and the crayon style packaging was just awkward for me. I never purchased any of their lip products again as I feel they just can’t get it right in this area. I do though like their foundations and self tanner. : )
Definitely sounds like a miss for you then!
Can I just say, your eye makeup is FANTABULOUS!!! I would love to know what you are wearing.
Under the Makeup Look!
I think it’s safe to say I’m passing on these. I’m generally a big fan of tarte, and I do like their lip products. But I have to like at least fifty percent of any kit to justify buying it and I’m not in love with enough of these shades. I think it’s great these are a gluten free lip product (which is important since I have celiac disease) but I wish they’d offered more interesting colors or a variety of finishes. Something sparkly since its for the holidays? These just seem boring to me. 🙁 That said I do like their lip crayons regularly and I’m suprised these got such so so ratings. Maybe the quality is better in their full priced singles?
It would be great if they did more finishes!
I bought last year’s tarte set and I thought it was cute and wearable for everyday. There were 8 minis though.
I think they have a bigger set, though I don’t know if they’re also minis or full-sized.
Christine, your eye look is gorgeous!
Thanks, Sonia!
I actually loved this set! I don’t really go for crazy-intense or full-coverage lip colors most of the time though. I also usually apply an EOS balm under Tarte’s matte formula, simply because I don’t like them to be completely matte. The EOS is my favorite ‘primer’ because it doesn’t have too much slip or shine, and they apply and wear well over it. I can definitely understand why some people wouldn’t like it. However, for those who like some variety, but want something more natural and ‘everyday appropriate’ (which really is Tarte’s target audience), I think this set could be a winner! 🙂
I think they should be marketed as a sheerer/buildable product 🙁 They’re just not full coverage like they say, you know? It’s just so weird to pretend, lol!
Hi Christine,
Where exactly are the products made? The box seems to say that one of the matte LipSurgances was made in the USA and the others were not specified. At the end it says “made in China”, I was wondering if you could please clarify that. Thank you for your great review and time 🙂
All the info I have is posted – sorry!
Thank you so much for getting back to me. I greatly value your reviews.
Thank you, Ann!
I actually really enjoyed this set! I purchased it a few weeks back after seeing/searching in stores and I’m so glad I did. With that said, I am not really a bold, dark purple/ red lip kinda gal, so these suited me perfectly. Coverage could definitely be better but I actually like the formula and the color payoff works for me. And as a side note, thanks so much for your reviews, Christine- I literally check your site before I buy most high end stuff! 🙂
Sounds like it was just the type of set for you, Liz! I wish they marketed the LipSurgences as a sheerer formula. They are so rarely as opaque as described, and sheer certainly has a place!
