Sephora Orchid & Garnet Lip Last Matte Lipsticks Reviews & Swatches
Orchid
Sephora Orchid Lip Last Matte Lipstick ($14.00 for 0.06 oz.) is a rich, mediumd-ark purple with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. This particular shade took longer to dry down than most, so it didn’t look full-on matte until 15 to 20 minutes after application, though it was transfer-resistant before then (after about five minutes).
It had nearly opaque pigmentation that applied fairly evenly in a single layer. The texture felt like a gel-like balm as it glided across my lips and felt as if it melted while I applied it, but it was very lightweight and forgiving of most imperfections in lip texture. It wore well for over seven hours before starting to fade a bit, and it faded evenly when it did. It was transfer-resistant from light eating and drinking over time and felt neither drying nor hydrating.

Formula Overview
$14.00/0.06 oz. - $233.33 Per Ounce
The formula is supposed to have "rich, opaque color with long-lasting, transfer-resistant wear that doesn't bleed or crack," and it's also described as "non-drying" and a "modern matte." It does deliver on its promises; it applies more like a traditional lipstick but has a set more like a liquid lipstick--definitely transfer-resistant and longer-wearing than most traditional lipsticks.
The texture felt smooth, like a gel-like cream with all the slip of a velvety primer and not the traditional wetness of a balmy lipstick. The lipsticks felt like they melted against my lips, and they delivered mostly opaque to fully opaque coverage in a single layer. That softness made them more prone "breaking" a bit when I swatched them on my arm, but I didn't experience that on my lips. Most of the shades were fairly forgiving of minor imperfections of lip texture and lip lines.
The setting process took longer than most liquid lipsticks, though it was more forgiving if one accidentally pressed one's lips together during the setting time. Per the brand, they say to "wait five to 10 minutes" before eating or drinking, and I found this was true for most shades.
I was impressed by how flexible and comfortable the color felt on my lips--it was very lightweight--and I could press my lips together without product pulling away after drinking/light eating. Like most formulas, even tougher liquid lipsticks, more oil-heavy meals will still break it down and create some transfer. Without eating (just drinking), the lipsticks lasted easily past the six-hour mark with color fully intact and most shades faded evenly as they wore down (from eating). The formula felt mostly non-drying to my lips over time. There was a subtle, sweet vanilla scent but no discernible taste.

Garnet
Sephora Garnet Lip Last Matte Lipstick ($14.00 for 0.06 oz.) is a medium-dark burgundy with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. It still had a bit of sheen to it after 10 minutes of wear, though the color was mostly transfer-resistant by that point (I could press my lips together with no ill-effects).
It had good color coverage that applied evenly across my lips and didn’t emphasize my lip lines noticeably in person; the close-up photo showed a bit of color in my lip lines toward the center of my lower lip but I didn’t notice this when I looked in the mirror. The lipstick had a smooth, velvety texture that felt a bit like a gel-cream as it skated across my lips but didn’t feel traditionally wet or slippery. After it set, it was transfer-resistant and easily lasted for over six hours and felt non-drying.

Sephora did an excellent job in the formulation of these two very difficult to get right shades. That Orchid shade blows all of its dupes away, leaving them gasping for air in the dust! I have UD Jawbreaker and MAC Hellbore, and do love them, but they can be fussy. So, I may still grab a tube of Orchid at some point.
I love, love, love orchid. Such a vibrant, rich shade. It’s definitely going on my wish list.
It’s totally you. Go for it. Plus, even at a budget price, it blows the dupes out of the water.
I think I will! *smile*
That’d look amazing with your hair!
Thank you!
I’ve been wearing those darker reddish colors lately. This looks (and is priced like) something I’d like to use.
Gosh, in my dark berry lipstick wearing days, I would have been all over Garnet – what a glorious autumn shade!
These colors and this formula seem so beautiful. Can you compare the formula to the Colourpop Matte X Lippie Stix formula? It sounds really similar and I’m always looking for more colours in that type of formula.
MatteX is drier, a bit thinner/clingier in comparison!
