Lila

Natasha Denona Lila 15-Pan Eyeshadow Palette ($129.00 for 1.20 oz.) is a new, permanent palette with 15 eyeshadows that span matte to metallic textures and pale pink to cool purple shades. There were a few shades that could have been better–more pigmented, less sparkly–but most were easier to work with when used with a dampened brush, which I know many have no issue using with their high-shine shimmers, so those things might not be deal-breakers in that instance. Most of the eyeshadows were pigmented and blenable with eight-hour wear.

An observation (but not something that impacted the rating) I had was that it was not the most cohesive palette on its own; the colors could certainly be used together, but there were a lot of intensely shimmery shades and only a few mattes. The mattes could have been in more readily usable shades to coordinate with some of the tones of the shimmery shades as well. It felt like a palette that I wanted to use to complement other palettes than as a standalone palette for me.

Per Se (135CM)

Per Se (135CM) is a medium-dark, purple-leaning taupe with neutral-to-cool undertones and a matte finish. It had a smooth consistency that was almost “dry” in a way but very finely-milled and adhered well to bare skin. It was richly pigmented and lasted for seven and a half hours on me.

Formula Overview

-

The majority of the brand's eyeshadows are quite pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing. The eyeshadows have improved over time, particularly with respect to longevity (without a primer). The original formula often creased on me within seven to eight hours, whereas the more current formula wears eight to nine hours with fading (instead of full-on creasing). The more matte finishes tend to be a bit more velvety, substantial, and less dry/powdery compared to prior iterations.

The metallic finish is often the creamiest, slightly denser in feel, but has excellent pigmentation, adhesion, and blendability. The sparkling shades can have some fallout, depending on how they're applied and how sparkly they are, so they sometimes work better with fingertips or a dampened brush; they can also run sheerer compared to other finishes.

Cream-Powders are the more unique formulation and tend to have firmer, almost stiff, consistencies and more semi-opaque, watercolor-esque coverage. They are longer-wearing, but they can take a few uses to learn how to use. This formula has also improved compared to when it first debuted--it is a bit more yielding now.

Viola (136M)

Viola (136M) is a vibrant, medium-dark berry with subtle, cool undertones and a pearly sheen. It had opaque color payoff in a single layer with a smooth, moderately dense texture that did require a slightly heavier hand to pickup product with a brush. The eyeshadow was blendable on my lid and wore well for eight hours.

Amara (137CM)

Amara (137CM) is a muted, medium-dark rosy brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation in a single layer, and it was buildable to full coverage by patting a touch more on top. The consistency was soft, a bit dusty in the pan, but it blended out well and did not sheer out too readily. It wore well for seven and a half hours on me.

Cyclone (138DC)

Cyclone (138DC) is a medium-dark, coppery brown with copper and pink sparkle. It had medium coverage, which did not build up well on its own. With a dampened brush, I was able to get semi-opaque coverage but still found it under-pigmented as a standalone shade. The texture was denser but fairly blendable. It lasted for seven and a half hours before creasing and had some fallout.

Nude Vino (139CM)

Nude Vino (139CM) is a deep brown with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. Amethyst (141M)

Amethyst (141M) is a bright, medium-dark purple with cool, blue undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. There were some larger sparkles in this shade, but the texture was fairly dense and more cream-like, which helped the sparkle stay on the lid and minimize fallout. It could have been more blendable and wasn’t as pigmented as it could have been. On me, it lasted for seven and a half hours before creasing and had minor fallout over time.

Magentic (142M) is a bright, medium-dark fuchsia with warm undertones and a frosted finish. It had rich, opaque pigmentation that applied evenly to the skin and blended out with ease. Nude Mauve (144CM)

Nude Mauve (144CM) is a medium, taupe brown with warmer undertones and a matte finish. It had excellent pigmentation but darkened noticeably on the skin compared to how it appeared in the pan, and it also got quite a bit warmer. The consistency was velvety and finely-milled but felt a bit dry. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me before fading.

Juneau (145S)

Juneau (145S) is a soft pink with warm undertones and a frosted finish. The eyeshadow had a soft, blendable consistency that yielded semi-opaque coverage in one layer (though it was supposed to be sheer). This shade worked better with a dampened brush as it tended to emphasize my lid’s texture if I tried to build it up dry. It wore well for seven hours.

Livid (146DC)

Livid (146DC) is a medium plum with warm, brown undertones and a metallic sheen. It had opaque pigmentation in a single layer, which was easy to apply to the lid and blended out with minimal effort. The eyeshadow started to crease on me after seven and a half hours of wear.

Purpure (147M)

Purpure (147M) is a deep, coppery red with warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It had good color payoff but was drier and more loosely pressed in the pan, so the eyeshadow did not adhere as well to bare skin. This was another shade that needed to be used damp to minimize fallout during application (as well as during wear!) and help it go on more evenly. It wore well for seven hours with some fallout.

Dragon Bite (148DC)

Dragon Bite (148DC) is a bright, medium coppery red base with shimmer that shifted from gold to green. The color was harder to dupe as the shimmer did not come through as much as anticipated and the base color appeared much lighter in practice than in the pan. It had semi-opaque color payoff with a moderately dense consistency. This shade lasted for seven and a half hours on me and had a bit of fallout over time.

Helio (149M)

Helio (149M) is a medium taupe with warmer undertones and a metallic sheen. The consistency was soft, smooth, and almost effortless to blend out, though it had a touch of excess product kicked up in the pan. It had opaque pigmentation that stayed on well for eight hours.

Christine! You have been producing a consistent, high quality blog for years! It is so hard to maintain that effort, and, I would imagine, to continue to have a passion for it (as the falling away of many original bloggers would attest to). You are much appreciated. If only we could credit you live in stores as well, say at the checkout.

CeeBee Avatar

This *looks* utterly beautiful and is pretty much everything I *should* be absolutely in lust with (pinks, purples, lots of shimmery shades, dusky mattes) but I find myself strangely unmoved.

My head says I should love it, my heart is pretty much just “Eh, it’s OK.”

Anna Nguyen Avatar

I love this palette! More than my car insurance! Not enough purple/pink palettes on the market! I’m so tired of the red, warm tone trend. This palette is everything.

Anna N Avatar

My favorite pinks and purples are from urban decay: 15th anniversary palette, spectrum palette, and flash. I like Laura Mercier plum palette also. I find purple the most flattering on my dark brown eyes.

Lila Avatar

You could’ve given this a “F” and I would have still purchased it :)! My name is all over this palette…literally! I was that kid that could never find their name on a single object in a souvenir shop. Not only does it have my name on it, but the case is a sparkly purple with awesome pink and purple shades. Sure, I may not be able to where this often, but now I FINALLY have something with my name on it besides bills.

Shari Avatar

I think it’s beautiful, and I love the colors! However, for $129 I’d need it to score an A or an A+, and to be able to provide a complete look. I’m sad to say it’s a pass for me

Genevieve Avatar

Thank you so much for this review and the hard work you do – it’s greatly appreciated by us all. You are the best Christine, by a country mile!
Whilst this palette is not for me, I can’t help noticing that a number of the shades do seem fairly similar to each other – especially the pinkish mattes. There did seem to be a need for some shades of greater contrast to balance the shimmery shades out.
At least, this palette offered more pinky, purply shades than reds and oranges that we have seen of late.

Jessica Avatar

For the price of this palette, everything should be an A+. I knew I wasn’t getting this bc I wasn’t impressed by the Sunset palette (which apparently is now permanent). I had issues with some of those mattes not being as vibrant as they should have been and some of the mattes getting these weird hard balls in them. So this is a hard pass for me. Hopefully, Colourpop will dupe it soon. I much preferred the Yes Please palette to the Sunset palette.

Denise S. Avatar

Today two of the items I’d been eyeing got reviewed! You are on a roll Christine ! Glad to see I have a good amount of dupes for these shadows. I’m pretty sure I’ll get this sooner or later. Because I love Natasha Denona and purple shadows!

jel888 Avatar

After my recent HUDA Desert Dusk disappointment, I know I’ll want to move on to this, as I liked her other palettes and this seemed to perform better in your rating than HUDA’s. I do agree with you on the color scheme and not having as many combinations. I wonder if she didn’t do like the Star palette for cross coordination?

Nancy T Avatar

I’m *still* hopelessly in love with this palette, lord help me! It’s likely that I may not need it, but it speaks to the crazy purple fiend inside my heart. Even though I saw that I have some solid dupes for perhaps half the shades, some of those are a little bit old. As in, my UD Last Call is about 6 years old….hmm. If I go through with buying it, I’ll use my Sephora 20% come November.

Anne Avatar

I opted for the new Huda Beauty palette for half the price. I’m trying it for the first time today so can’t say how it wears but it is gorgeous. It rated lower than this one but it seems to have more of a range of unique types of shadows. I was waiting for the Dragon Bite swatches as I was pretty sure I have dupes. I’m underwhelmed by that one plus I have several dupes of the other shades so this is an easy pass at least his point. Thanks for your hard work! ??

Joan Avatar

Awesome review, and I agree about feeling like it might need a companion. I have mine and while I haven’t done it yet I really want to pair it with my Sunset palette (I really like orange and purple together). I heard somewhere, I ingest too much information to remember my source unfortunately, that ND shadows are “self-transitioning”. Have you heard that? Thoughts?

Marie-Estelle Avatar

I remember “A glittery life” saying that and she works for the brand. From what I understood, the shadows supposedly blend so well you shouldn’t need transition colours. Well… Mua never needed them before YouTube and there are many formula allowing the same effect out there, often skill even suffice. Creating a term for something doesn’t mean the concept itself is new and innovative ?

Jenny A Chan Avatar

The colors look pretty today but some shades are too similar to each other like the nude mattes and fuchsia pinks. They could have had more distinct colors. For the price I don’t think I’ll get it since it wasn’t an A.

Agona Avatar

I want this but I have literally 6x 8-pan palettes (Heimish, my fav Korean brand!) and a score of single shadows that are in my “need to try” pile from previous hauls that I can’t justify a $129 palette that I may or may not get to play with for another 2 months. :-\

Deborah S. Avatar

I am really torn about this palette. I have a couple of 5 pan shadows from ND and I don’t love them. They seem to blend to a muddy mess on my eye lids but the colors in this palette are staggeringly beautiful and I think I love every single one of them. I plan to see it when I go to Spokane for a pre-holiday shopping trip so will see how I feel about it then. Really love it though. Maybe I am blending too much?

Agona Avatar

I used to worry about that when I’d try a brand but then I realized I have plenty of shadows that I love and work the way I want them to than to spend money/time/effort on a brand/formula that makes me “work” to get it to do what I want. 🙂 That being said, I’ve been hesitant to try ND due to the mixed feedback like yours coupled with the higher price tag. :-\

Alison Avatar

I LOVE this palette so much! It’s my new favorite! It’s so vibrant. I bought this and Viseart Bridal Satin palette. Returning the Viseart as I was not impressed with it compared to this palette.

Alison Avatar

You are probably right. Bridal Satin was so subdued and Lila was bright and in your face. I really like super bright and shimmery looks, so Bridal Satin seemed underwhelming to me. It still performed okayish but honestly I prefer the Natasha Denona. However, it is a give and take…while Natasha is crazy bright, there is also some fallout and I had zero fall out with Bridal Satin.

I’m thinking of getting Viseart Royal Bijoux (I think that is the name). Perhaps those colors are more bright and what I am looking for?

Marie-Estelle Avatar

Thank you so much for sharing how it worked for you. Bridal is definitely a step down, especially the two left columns.

Bijou royal is my favourite shimmer palette from viseart, so I might not be the most objective about it, but I will try!

I love the rich jewel tones it offers! That being said, I am fairly fair so it will show up easily on my skintone, and it remains a toned down shimmer (not as sparkly as ND shadows) which I love because I feel very comfortable wearing a colourful look at work of during the day in general with this. https://www.temptalia.com/swatches/viseart-eyeshadow-palette/bijoux-royal-09/#/formula

If you really are more into brights, Boheme ribbons is more for you
https://www.temptalia.com/swatches/viseart-eyeshadow-palette/boheme-dream-ribbons-boheme/#/formula
Note that the shimmer remain toned down here too.

Susan Avatar

While I love the way this swatches on my arm, I cannot get the shadows to last on my eye. They crease and fade and I’ve tried using them over a few different primers, over primer and powder, over concealer, and on bare lids…….nothing works 🙁 I also have a lot of transfer on my hooded lids.
(and I don’t like using glitter glue, and honestly for this price I shouldn’t have to)
