Makeup Geek Nostalgic Foiled Eyeshadow
Makeup Geek Nostalgic Foiled Eyeshadow ($10.00 for 0.064 oz.) is a light-medium pink with warm undertones and a metallic finish. It had chunkier shimmer in it, and it was very creamy, so it was better applied with a flat, synthetic brush and patted onto the skin and pushed into the skin, rather than swept on. It was intensely pigmented, though, and I actually liked spritzing my brush a bit after getting the product on it for faster, smoother application–it had enough pigment to stretch without losing coverage with that application method. The color started to crease on me after six hours of wear. Too Faced Cotton Candy (PiP, $16.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Chanel Impulsion (93) (LE, $32.00) is lighter, brighter (95% similar). Makeup Geek Plot Twist Foiled Eyeshadow ($10.00 for 0.064 oz.) is a bright, bluish purple with cool undertones and a frosted finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation and a drier, flakier texture, even though it was still denser and more cream-like than a traditional powder eyeshadow. I had trouble diffusing and blending this shade out, as it tended to look patchy. It creased on me after six hours of wear. Too Faced Cotton Candy (PiP, $16.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Makeup Geek Hype Foiled Eyeshadow ($10.00 for 0.064 oz.) is a bright, medium-dark purple with subtle, cool undertones and a sparkling, frosted finish. It had decent color payoff, but it wasn’t as intense or as creamy as many of the other shades in the range. Thus far, the brand has struggled to put out really great purple-hued eyeshadows. It had a tendency to separate and look patchy when I blended it out, and it was best applied in pushing motions on the lid but did not work well in the crease at all. I noticed slight creasing starting at the six-hour mark. Kaleidos Flowing Haze (Radiate) (PiP, ) is more shimmery (95% similar). NARS Argentina (P, $22.00) is more shimmery, darker, warmer (90% similar). Morphe Royalty (LE, ) is darker (90% similar). Anastasia Shookington (LE, $12.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Makeup Geek Sorcery Foiled Eyeshadow ($10.00 for 0.064 oz.) is a dark, bluish gray with cooler undertones and a metallic sheen. It was richly pigmented with a cream-like, moderately dense texture where a little went a long way. I had the best luck using a flat, synthetic brush for applying and blending out the color. This shade creased faintly after seven hours of wear. Sydney Grace Slayed (P, $6.25) is more shimmery, darker, warmer (95% similar). MAC Emerald Dusk (LE, $21.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Formula Overview
Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadow ($10.00 for 0.064 oz.) is supposed to be a hybrid between cream and powder with intense pigmentation. They are, generally, quite pigmented and have a very dense, creamy consistency that is a bit thicker and sometimes has to be pressed and worked into the skin to smooth it out (or else it looks uneven, not in color, but in actual texture). They can be gorgeous on, as they have a high-shine finish and seem richer than similarly-hued products in a more traditional powder formula. For me, the biggest downside is that they are particularly prone to creasing; it is not just something I have experienced but a more frequent comment I see from readers about it. I get creasing between five and eight hours of wear, and the only solution I’ve found is using a MAC Paint Pot underneath but thinner primers like Urban Decay Primer Potion don’t seem to help much.

I like the colors, esp. the purples, but I don’t think this formula is going to make it on my oily lids, even with primer. And since they don’t accept returns, except for damaged items, I would order maybe a couple of shadows just to see.
It might not 🙁 I have definitely heard from readers who have tried a lot of primers and nothing worked for them!
I’m really excited to see more foiled eyeshadows from MUG. They are perfect for holiday-inspired makeup!
They are very intense!
Fun colours, I’m not going to order any of them though.
You sure do beautiful and interesting looks. Very inspirational!
Thank you, Helene!
I love these colours and the looks you’ve done with them! I have dupes for the first 2 colours but not the last 2. I might pick them up, they’re not too expensive and they got quite a decent grade.
Thanks a lot, Claire! 🙂
Wouldn’t ya know it? The 2 that did well, Nostalgic and Sorcery, are ones that I do have dupes for! MAC Da Bling and Lorac Slate, plus a dead-on dupe of MAC’s Knight Divine in the old Nyx Rock ‘n Roll trio.
Awww!
Sorcery is a beautiful shade, but the rest, whilst pretty, inhabit lots of our palettes. Beautiful eye looks Christine.
It is a rich shade!
I love the look of Hype and Sorcery. Also, both looks you created are gorgeous as always, Christine!
Thank you!
Sorcery is an interesting shade.
It is!
I’m kind of surprised some of the foiled shadows get such high ratings. I don’t know if I just got duds or what, but the couple of ones I have are awful, especially In the Spotlight. Can hardly yield any color from it at all and none of them are high shine or high shimmer. I’m not saying I don’t believe your reviews and I have to believe the swatches, it’s just weird how differently mine seem to perform. I’ve thought about contacting Makeup Geek about it but some time has passed since I purchased them, so I don’t. Just a shame that I just never use them because they’re poor quality and I love MUG!
That is very odd! I have only had pigmentation issues with the purple shades, but even then, they are pretty good, just not as intense as others.
CatG have you tried using them wet? And what kind of brush are you using? I find these work well stiff wet brush or even your finger. They do not seem to preform very well with softer eyeshadow brushes.
Hi Becca,
I know I have tried In the Spotlight wet and with various brushes and it still wasn’t great at all. I will have to try the others wet.
Thanks!
Sorcery immediately made me think of ABH’s Denim Smoky (which cannot ship to Canada from ABH website) and is also not avail on Sephora C’s website.. must be some forbidden ingredient. Sorcery may go on the list in lieu.
That is so weird! I haven’t heard of makeup that can’t be shipped to Canada. Normally, it’s the other way around!
The opposite: Canada is highly restrictive. Ingredients in makeup, perfume, solvents and paints, medicine… Same goes for dairy and meat products produced in Canada. Commercials bragging hormone free are redundant here; they are simply not permitted.
Very interesting – the food/medicine doesn’t surprise me, but the makeup one does since I have constantly rued that Canada gets all those neon dyes without the “not for use on eyes” label! Thank you for properly informing me!
Makeup, it’s slowly getting more of a crack down up here, but on the flip side there are a number of ingredients that have not been tested by the FDA that have gotten a pass up here (Neon pigments anyone 😉 no one wants to shell out the money in America to prove they are not harmful and submit the findings to the FDA). But two big ones is no Lead (still found in some lipsticks) or Mercury (found in some mascaras) found in any products can not be sold up here, but are still under the legal limit by the FDA standards….
Also, Chemical sunblocks are taken out of foundations most of the time from US brands sold here because our regulations/testing is not worth it to keep them in up here. (Which makes me happy!) Because sunblock is considered a medical ingredient it has stronger testing restrictions.
We have the same style procedures like the US’s FDA but we take all reports and tests into account from all over the world to make determinations on ingredients in cosmetics so that not all the data comes in from outsourced purchased testing by the brand themselves only.
The shade Plot Twist is a surprise because It’s just a lighter shade compared to their Center Stage Eyeshadow but I guess it lacks the base shade with such high shimmer pigment use.
Hype (purple) is really pretty.
It is!
That second eye look is the stuff my dreams are made of!!!! Gorgeous!!!!!! I really love the first one too. I love it when you do unusual eye looks in unexpected color combos, they inspire me!
Aw, thank you Bonnie!
