MAC Nutcracker Sweet Nude Patentpolish Kit
MAC Nutcracker Sweet Nude Patentpolish Kit

MAC Nutcracker Sweet Nude Patentpolish Kit ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) contains four miniature-sized Patentpolish Lip Pencils, which are supposed to have the color and “sheen of a gloss with the precision of a lip pencil.” The formula is also supposed to be hydrating. The texture of the formula is smooth, lightly creamy, and emollient, so it feels thinner and more balm-like on the lips, which makes for a hydrating formula overall, but it tends to have short wear time. Of all MAC’s lip kits, this one seems to be short on value, too.

Value

  • Patentpolish Lip Pencil: $21.00 for 0.08 oz. or $262.50/oz.
  • Total Value: $31.50

Pleasure’s All Mine is a light pink with warm undertones and a soft sheen. It had semi-sheer, somewhat buildable coverage (up to medium coverage) with a smooth, balm-like texture that was comfortable to wear, though it only lasted for two and a half hours. The color pulled into my lip lines, but the coverage was even. MAC Samantha Ravndahl (LE, $19.00) is more pigmented (95% similar). Urban Decay Morning After (DC, $18.00) is warmer (95% similar). Revved Up is a soft, light-medium peachy-orange with warm undertones and very fine, golden pearl. It had semi-sheer color coverage that went on fairly evenly with only some visible color gathering in lip lines. The texture was smooth and comfortable to wear, while the color itself lasted for two hours on me. bareMinerals Kitty (PiP, $20.00) is darker, more pigmented (95% similar). Gucci Beauty Sally Soft Honey (112) (P, $42.00) is less shimmery, darker, less pigmented (90% similar). MAC Stately Shimmer (LE, $20.00) is darker (90% similar). It’s Really Me is a soft, light-medium peach with warm undertones and a creamy sheen. It had semi-sheer pigmentation that covered the lips evenly, but the more emollient consistency caused the product to settle into my lip lines. This shade lasted for two hours and was moisturizing while worn. MAC Fresh Brew (P, $19.00) is darker (95% similar). ColourPop Kiddo (LE, $7.00) is darker (90% similar). MAC Deco-a-Go-Go (LE, $21.00) is more shimmery, lighter, glossier (85% similar). Bite Beauty Latte (DC, $24.00) is darker (85% similar). Too Faced Birthday Suit (P, $22.00) is lighter (85% similar). Tarte Candy (LE, $20.00) is darker, more pigmented (80% similar). Hourglass Cameo (P, $49.00)(80% similar). Revlon Ingenue (145) (DC, $8.99) is darker, warmer (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

French Kiss is a muted, medium brown with warm, caramel undertones and a natural sheen. It had semi-sheer color payoff with a balmy, emollient consistency that glided across the lips with ease and left behind a moderate shine. This shade seemed to settle least into my lip lines, so it was more wearable on its own. The color wore for two hours, though, so it will need regular reapplication. MAC Nice Cheeks (LE, $24.00) is lighter (95% similar). Urban Decay 1993 (P, $20.00) is glossier (95% similar). Jouer Fifth Ave (P, $17.00) is more pigmented (90% similar). Fenty Beauty Cocoa Drizzle (P, $18.00) is less pigmented (90% similar). bareMinerals Honeybun (PiP, $20.00) is more pigmented (90% similar). Chanel Caresse (LE, $30.00) is brighter, glossier (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Joan (LE, $36.00) is more pigmented, cooler (90% similar). Maybelline Charming Cocoa (125) (LE, ) is lighter, more pigmented, glossier (90% similar). Estee Lauder Bare Instinct (P, $32.00) is lighter, brighter (85% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Universal Appeal (P, $55.00) is lighter, more pigmented, less glossy (85% similar). MAC Age/Sex/Location (LE, $19.00) is cooler, less glossy (80% similar). Is it just me or are the last three almost dupes of each other? There’s just not a lot of difference between them to me, which is no bueno for a lip set. Meh. This is the third year in a row MAC has underwhelmed me with their holiday kits :(.

These pencils get low scores, but I really love them for a no-brainer natural lip. The formula lasts a decent amount of time on me too (about the same as mac lustre lipsticks). I can see why they’re not everyone’s cup of tea though.
