Kat Von D MetalMatte Mini Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
MetalMatte
Kat Von D MetalMatte Mini Eyeshadow Palette ($39.00 for 0.60 oz.) is a new, limited edition miniature-sized version of the previously-released, limited edition MetalMatte palette. The mini version includes some shades from the brand’s Metal Crush range that were not in the original MetalMatte palette, but those with larger Kat Von D stashes may find they already own every shade in the palette in some other variation. I felt like a few of the mattes were weaker than the originals I have of them, while others performed the same (which wasn’t outstanding). The shimmery shades performed the best, while the mattes were more powdery and buildable than richly pigmented.

Thunderstruck
Thunderstruck is a light, yellowed white with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It had good color payoff, just shy of truly full coverage, in one pass. The eyeshadow felt smooth, soft and cream-like without being too dense or too thick in the pan. The eyesahdow applied well to bare skin and blended out nicely. It wore well for eight and a half hours on me before fading noticeably.

Flash
Flash is a medium-dark gold with warm, orange undertones and a metallic finish. It had good color coverage, though it needed a second layer for full coverage, that applied evenly to my lid. The consistency was soft, not too firmly or too loosely pressed in the pan, and it seemed easier to work with for initial application and blending than it did in the original MetalMatte palette. It lasted for eight and a half hours o me.

Bone
Bone is a soft beige with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation with a soft, lightly powdery texture, but it wasn’t too thin so it applied well to bare skin and did not sheer out right away. This shade lasted for seven and a half hours on me.

Feather
Feather is a light-medium yellow with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a powdery consistency that I found hard to work with without a primer, as it sheered out too quickly, didn’t build up, and took more effort to blend it out. It wore well for six and a half hours on me.

Suede
Suede is a light brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff in a single layer, which wasn’t too buildable without primer underneath. The eyesahdow was lightly powdery, but it did not sheer out too readily on my lid, so it was workable. This shade lasted for seven and a half hours on me.

Oak
Oak is a muted, medium-dark brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had medium coverage that was buildable to semi-opaque coverage (or opaque coverage with a primer). The texture was thin, somewhat dusty, and could have been easier to diffuse and blend out in practice. It wore well for seven and a half hours on me. This shade performed worse than the original.

Velvet
Velvet is a deep plum with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had medium coverage that was somewhat buildable, but the texture was rather powdery and dry, which resulted in sheerer coverage, some fallout during application, and more challenging blending. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me.

Beautiful packaging but those are definitely colors we have seen before, I hope to see more cool eyeshadow palettes this upcoming year, happy holidays Christine!!
Love that eye look!! I was thinking of getting this palette but I have raw power already and the mattes didnt score high enough for me. Perhaps I’ll swatch in store
I got 95% of these colors already, hoping she will issue new colors in new metal matte kit for 2018!
I have the original Metal Matte and I love it! The colors blend SO well. It’s funny, bc when you are applying them, you’re not quite sure how it will turn out, but after setting spray, everything settles into place. This smaller palette looks nice, but the colors are not a good selection. Feather, the yellow, I use in the bigger palette with the orange and pink as a transition and Velvet, the burgundy shade, I use to intensify purple looks instead of a black. So, even the colors that received a mediocre grade can still be used for something and work in that way.
Judging by the number of pages of dupes for most of these shades, I would safely say that we all own lots of them. Having them in one spot is handy if you use these colours most of the time.
If the mattes were a bit better, I think this palette would be more appealing.
Stunning eye look Christine.
Not worth a second look to me. The colors are either too sparkly or muddy.
Those Mattes though! Oy! I hope this isn’t a preview of what to expect from her shadows from now on.
Once an avid , purchaser of her line, I find it to be an easy pass now. I wish she would listen to her customers and fans more when they tell her what they would like. For the past year or so, she doesn’t seem to be as into her makeup line.
The mattes look like they performed the say as the shades in last years Metal Mattes so it’s definitely the colorant issues with this one as well. Her holiday palettes have not always been consistent with her permanent products quality in the past either.
I kind of want her to do an all Metal Crush shades palette but I’m putting this one on my wishlist to get those permanent shades. I sold my original Metal/Matte palette as it was just too bulky and I wasn’t using the matte shades as much.
Let just say I wouldn’t feel as bad about depotting the Metal Crush shades from this palette and ditching some the mattes that didn’t work for me at this price point. 😉
Can you review the Violet Voss Hashtag Palette?
Coming up short for me…
Christine, how big are the pans compared to those from the original palette?
I have a feeling that this MetalMatte mini, with its “boring” neutral color scheme and sheerer mattes, is designed to appeal to the Asian demographic. Kat von D’s eyeshadows may be too bold/pigmented for Asia, at least from what I can see on Sephora HK – her quads and colorful LE palettes are half off for days and still not sold out. I also think that the limited edition products she brought back for a hot second are unsold products from other parts of the world. I think when we take the global market into consideration, I can understand why a lot of her colorful products are limited edition. It’s just my speculation though.
They are 0.06 oz. each, same as the original palette.
This redundancy in this palette has had me feeling let down from the very first time I saw the contents of it. Already have the outstanding MetalMatte Palette from last year. Of the 3 Crushed Metal shades in here that weren’t included in that one, the only one I feel is a must-have for me is Thunderstruck! Love that shade!
Beautiful packaging! Thanks for reviewing this amazing eyeshadow palettes in your post. I love all these shades. Keep sharing such makeup product reviews.
Nice enough but, once again, the colours just aren’t for me at all.
This is a nice palette, but I’m disappointed in the darker mattes in this palette. They’re not as good as the shimmers, I was hoping they’d be like the Shade/Light mattes at least.
Is Thunderstruck in this palette the same as the single of the same name?
Yes.
Hi Christine, just wondering why Raw Power lasts as long as Doce, but has a slightly lower longevity score?
Fat fingers and an ineffective brain – I plugged in the longevity rating wrong!
