Kat Von D Mother Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a medium-dark raspberry pink with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. It had mostly opaque color coverage that went on evenly. The consistency was firmer and stiffer in the tube, so it required extra pressure and tugged on the lips as I applied the color to my lips. It had a clingier feel, which may be uncomfortable for some, but the color lasted for over seven hours and left a stain behind. The formula was somewhat drying over time. NARS Never Say Never (P, $27.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). KVD Beauty Mother (P, $20.00) is lighter, brighter, warmer (95% similar). NYX Natural (P, $6.00) is lighter (90% similar). Formula Overview
Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is supposed to have “bold color” with “long-lasting wear and luxe comfort.” I reviewed several of these shades when they were first released, and a lot of them were so dry that they were stiff to the point of dragging, tugging, and were nearly painful to apply, though not all. Some of the more recently released shades were surprisingly creamy, comfortable to apply, and really felt like a major departure from a lot of the ones I had tried from the initial release–they were pigmented, easier to apply, and were non-drying to drying. It seems like performance can really vary from shade to shade, unfortunately.

Double Dare and Lolita II look identical…
Yes, they are similar!
I made Screenshots to See them Both next to each other. And I think one does only Need one of the colours.
By the way, you can do this on the site with “compare any two,” which you’ll find on review pages in the sidebar (on desktop) or under the post (mobile and smaller screens) or through Swatch Gallery > Compare Any Two!
Yes thank you. I do this very often to look if a lipstick is a dupe for mac Betty bright which I love. This time I just forgot about it.
They’re basically identical in the Everlasting Liquid Lipstick range as well. I used to own both, but I got rid of one because they were too similar.
I have Lolita II in the liquid lipstick formula but I might have to get it in studded kiss too. I love this packaging and I love Lolita II color.
I can definitely see owning both, as the Studded Kiss formula, while more matte, is not the same flat, matte of the ELL!
Well looks like I’m getting Mother. I’ve been trying to dupe it for a lipstick equivalent for years as my lips just can’t take liquid formulas.
Hope the Studded Kiss formula is more forgiving for you, Chelsea!
I already bought and returned Double Dare and Lolita II. I thought they would be rosier versions of MAC Taupe, but they both were like bold corals on me. Oh well, plenty of other LE lipsticks to come.
Darn! Here’s hoping something else works better 😉
oh darn it, I want all of them…
Aww!
Hi Christine. I’m confused. My LE Studded Kiss in Mother is satin finish and not matte. In fact, I wore it the other day and it doesn’t even remotely look the same on me as it does on you. My swatch also looks like it has more sheen. Well, I don’t know, I do love it. It lasted for hours without a retouch.
All I can go off is what I have, and mine appears matte to me! It is in line with the majority of the Studded Kiss line – matte but not the same flat/matte finish as the liquid lipsticks.
Oh of course! Yours does look matte for sure. It’s weird – it’s like we have 2 completely different lipsticks! I wonder if there was some differences in the batches or something.
Thank You!
Thank you!
Thank you!
I’ve been waiting for this to place my order! I kind of like the Studded kiss shades that I have but I still needed your rating to give me the go ahead! Double dare is definitely coming home! And maybe Mother…
No problem, KK!
Mother is pretty! Reminds me that I need to wear my Never Say Never more often, lol! And I don’t think I’ve worn Fanny all summer, time to break it out again, no that it’s fall!
There ya go 😉 Combine the two for something deeper but less bright!
Now, that’s an idea!
I’m really liking NARS Train Bleu topped with MUFE #502 Taupe Violet, BTW. It’s a great fall color!
I just realized, too, that while I mostly don’t care much for matte lipsticks, I’ve always liked the NARS Matte Velvet lip pencils. Not sure why. They just never seem tuggy or draggy to me, and don’t dry out my lips.
All three colors look great on you! I’m still late to the party on matte finish lipsticks though, still not sure what I think of them.
Thank you! 🙂
Really nice colours but they Look a Little Bit dry. I think there Are good dupes for them which will be better for me.
They are definitely matte!
Am I crazy for wanting to keep both Double Dare and Lolita II? I’ve been hearing they looked identical, and they certainly look very similar in this review, but when I bought both intending to keep just one I couldn’t decide. Lolita II looks like a pinky brown on me and is like nothing I have. I thought for sure I’d have a dusty rose to dupe Double Dare, but no, it’s just slightly browner than anything I’ve got, and slightly less brown than Lolita II. Double dare is more flattering on me, but Lolita II more unique and (I feel) on trend with all the browns that are popular now. I can’t decide!!! ? ? ?
I think they can look more (or less) different depending on your coloring, so maybe you can see the differences 🙂
Well, I am pretty fair. Or maybe I’m just a makeup addict 😉
Their beautiful, and I love the silver packaging. I wish she had also done a set of unconventional colors in this packaging. I have dupes for all of these.
*they’re, not their My fingers got ahead of my brain
That would have been great if she did!
Oooh, looks like I will need to get either Double Dare or Lolita II -I’ve been looking for this color for a while, no dupes, and the silver studded packaging is so cool!
I’ll be curious to see which one makes the cut!
I’ve been trying to ignore these but you make me want to get them. 😉
Out of all of them, Double Dare is calling me but I’ll have to get it next month if it’s in stock.
I also do like the metal finish packaging but the one that had me screaming was the ones they put up for a charity auction that actually matches the lipstick shade to the tube colour. They looked so cool. lol
You could probably pick one or the other between Double Dare and Lolita II, though 😉
Oh no! I love ALL 3! I definitely wasn’t expecting that. But if I had to pick only one, it would probably be Double Dare. Just the description alone made me know I would fall hard for that one! Surprisingly, Mother appeals to me…odd since cool pinks never do. KVD is finally back on her game with these and the Metal Matte Palette!
Mother is a unique shade! It’s cool but not fuchsia/super blue!
I’d wear ’em all, very pretty. Love the finish, also.
Awesome!
Will just Lolita be in this Studded Kiss lipstick form? I have the liquid lip of Lolita. I like Double Dare too. It’s as about as “red” as I go:)
Lolita has been part of the Studded Kiss range for awhile!
Mother is the only one that would work for me shade wise I think. I think they are bit too matte for me though.
Totally understand that! They are definitely matte.
I like all three, but I agree that you probably don’t need both Double Dare and Lolita II.
I think one could justify it if you wear those shades often or you have certain more extreme undertones so the differences in undertone would be more noticeable on that person!
That’s so true, of course. I guess I’d have to try them on to see, as a lot of nudes makes me a walking dead.
love the packaging, boring ass colours though. YAWN
Bummer!
Thank you for the amazing review ! I love the Lolita II color so much! But I still don’t know which I should buy, the studded kiss one or the liquid one :'( Which one of them is dryer in your opinion? Some people said that the liquid one is really dry which makes me worried.
I find the Studded Kisses to be drier on average!
