#94

Guerlain #94 Rouge G de Guerlain Matte Lip Color ($33.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a deep, muted red with subtle, cool undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had nearly opaque color coverage in a single, fluid stroke, which applied evenly on my lips and didn’t emphasize my lip lines or natural lip texture. The texture was lightweight, lightly emollient but not slippery or all that creamy–just enough not to tug–and was comfortable to wear. It stayed on nicely for six hours and was hydrating over time.

Formula Overview

$33.00/0.12 oz. - $275.00 Per Ounce

The Matte formula is supposed to have a "semi-matte" finish that has "the perfect balance between hydration and vibrant color" and contains "hylauronic acid and blurring powders" to help "smooth and volumize the look of lips." The coverage was semi-opaque to opaque, somewhat buildable, but there was enough slip that it was better to keep it two layers or else I experienced the color clumping up on itself and becoming more uneven in overall application. The texture was velvety and thin, I get that "blurring powder" feel that some of the recent matte formulas have had in them--a little "dry" and more prone to clinging on my lips. They wore between three and six hours but fade evenly and more red-based shades left faint stains behind. I didn't find any of them hydrating, and some of them felt drying to me. They had the typical violet scent but no taste.

For me, Rouge G was all about making my lips look better: smoother, plumper, and delivered good wear with a hydrating formula, but the Mattes left me wanting, as they weren't hydrating, didn't smooth out my lip lines for the most part, and felt a bit tight to wear after a few hours. One of the tell-tale signs of a drying formula is during the swatch-a-thon; given that there were only 11 shades to swatch, it should have been easy, but my lips felt a little raw afterward, which is typical of swatching more drying formulas for me.

#95

Guerlain #95 Rouge G de Guerlain Lip Color (2018) ($33.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a light-medium, peachy copper with strong, warm undertones and a metallic shimmer running throughout. It was more shimmery than the typical Rouge G, so it was both luminous as well as being more metallic. The texture was moderately emollient and felt more slippery than most in the range, which led to less even application and a bit of product that sank into my lip lines. It had semi-sheer to medium coverage that lasted well for three and a half hours but was moisturizing to wear.

Formula Overview

$33.00/0.12 oz. - $275.00 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to have "intense colour" with a hydrating base that includes things like jojoba and mango butter as well as hyaluronic acid (and gugul resin) to "help to smooth and plum up lips." I would describe the formula as somewhere between semi-opaque and opaque, often buildable, with a luminous sheen that seems like there's very, very fine pearl but less distinctive shimmer (except for the shades that are actually shimmery). I find that the magic of the formula is in its finish--it's shiny, luminous, and absolutely smoothing on the lips without compromising wear (four to six hours, sometimes longer). The formula is very hydrating and comfortable to wear. They have a sweet, floral scent but no discernible taste to me. The updated shade range seems to have a stronger emphasis on mid-tones in coral and red and less beiges than before.

The Rouge G de Guerlain Lip Colors have been updated but mostly with respect to packaging and the shade range, as the formula itself has not been changed (per the brand). The lipsticks are now available as refills for $32.00 each, and then one can pick from an assortment of cases ($15.00 each), though each refill comes with a small, plastic cap that keeps the refill from drying out while waiting to be sold. The refill cap seems like it would be sufficient to keep the lipstick long-term, but I can't say from experience. I have not tested each shade for wear, but the shades I have tested, initial swatches and applications, and the like make the formula seem the same as before.

The old Rouge G cases do not fit on the new refills as the case doesn't stay on without a magnet (it just slides right off). I don't yet have any of the cases as they weren't available to me to purchase yet, but I plan to pick one or two up merely to see how they feel (probably the Original, to see if there was any weight change, and then something new).

A big upside to the refillable packaging is that they're actually significantly less expensive buying them piecemeal than buying it all-in-one. The original Rouge Gs were last sold at $58.00 for 0.12 oz., and now, the all-in-one price is effectively $47.00 for 0.12 oz. -- that's a nearly a 19% reduction in price.

#96

Guerlain #96 Rouge G de Guerlain Lip Color (2018) ($33.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a muted, medium pink with moderate, warm undertones and a luminous sheen. It had good color payoff in a single layer, though it wasn’t quite opaque (and couldn’t be built up to full coverage either). The lipstick had a lightweight, moderately emollient texture that was comfortable to apply and to wear, but it wasn’t so slippery that it sank noticeably into my lip lines. It wore well for four and a half hours and was hydrating over time.

Ugh! #96 is GORGEOUS!
So, I currently have #06 in my Sephora cart, and then I fall hard for #96. Not sure which one would look the best on me for a pinky-nude. Probably #96? Decisions! 🤷‍♀️

#96 is very pretty, but I have a couple of the main dupes on the list. Also, I’m not a big fan of the Rouge G packaging. It’s beautiful and impressive, but it’s so heavy and bulky for everyday use.

I am resisting temptation with these Rouge G’s. The formula is a favorite and the shades are so pretty but I just cannot buy another lipstick this year!! Funnily enough, when I visited my daughter last weekend, I took four lipsticks with me for a two day trip. I didn’t bring a single cool toned lipstick and the palette I took was a cool toned palette. While I was in Sephora I almost bought a cool toned lippie but then caught myself.

#94 is a stunning shade, quite vibrant. If #95 had been a little less sheer and more pigmented, that would be a perfect spring/summer shade. I liked the light metallic effect on it.
