Fenty Beauty Baecae Vivid Liquid Eyeliner Trio Review & Swatches
Baecae
Fenty Beauty Baecae Vivid Liquid Eyeliner Trio ($35.00 for 0.39 oz.) is mostly a miss–Banana Blaze had the most pigmentation in the set, but all three applied unevenly with more or less patchiness. They were harder to apply as they were runny and took longer to dry down, so they often spread into my fine lines as I was waiting for them to set. The only upside was that they did stay in place without fading or flaking once they dry down.

Hottie Alert
Hottie Alert is a medium pink with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation in a single layer, which didn’t build up well due to it being quite thin and watery. The first layer of product was uneven and patchy, and the second layer just looked worse as it started to appear cracked. It was prone to spreading into any fine lines and texture on my skin as it took a bit longer to dry down. Once it set, the eyeliner didn’t fade or migrate during the 10 hours it lasted for.

Formula Overview
-
The formula is supposed to have "super-smooth precision and glide" with a "hyper-vivid pop of color" in "one stroke." The pigmentation ranged from shade to shade, but most shades were semi-opaque to opaque in one stroke with deeper, less pastel-neon shades having better coverage. The formula was very fluid (almost too fluid, as some shades seeped into fine lines as it was drying down) paired with a very thin brush-type applicator that had some flex but didn't seem floppy.
Some of the lighter, more pastel-neon shades appeared streaky or "cracked" as they dried down. They can take a bit longer to dry down, which might have been why some of them settled and spread into my fine lines. Once they set, they didn't budge or move around. They do not claim to be waterproof, and they are not waterproof, but some of the deeper shades--like the blues, greens, and plum stain.
I tried using the included applicator as well as separate, eyeliner brushes (brush-type and angled) to see if applicator improved, but it was about the same; using the included applicator often ensured better pigmentation but just as easily could over-apply product. I also tried some shades as eyeshadow bases/cream eyeshadows (particularly when they didn't seem to work that well as a one-stroke eyeliner), but they often proved problematic with sheerer, uneven applicator or were just hard to diffuse along the edges. They didn't take eyeshadow layered on top of that particularly well either, so I don't find they were particularly usable as bases either.

Wet Tshirt
Wet Tshirt is a bright white with neutral undertones and a matte finish. It had medium pigmentation, which wasn’t buildable due to the patchy, uneven lay down of product. The texture was very spreadable, as it was thin and runny, but it was harder to control and harder yet to keep from spreading into fine lines for me as the dry down took longer. On me, the eyeliner stayed in place for 10 hours without fading or flaking.

Banana Blaze
Banana Blaze is a bright yellow with subtle, warm undertones and a flat, matte finish. It had opaque pigmentation, but it applied unevenly and was inconsistent in just how poorly it applied–sometimes it was decent! and other times it was dismal with a very crackled appearance. While the brand recommends shaking before use (which is what I did each time), there was no indicating anything was mixing, so I’m not sure if that was part of the problem. The texture was very fluid and more prone to migrating into fine lines if I wasn’t careful to look up while it was drying down. Once it set, it didn’t fade or move around for the 10 hours I wore it for.

I can’t see Banana Blaze in the “as worn” picture.
Hi Kira,
If you click the look details, it specifies where it was applied – it worked poorly as an eyeliner, so I tried it as a base (as I did for many shades to see if they were any better/more versatile). (I tested it on its own at a later date.)
Looking at your photos of the tubes, it’s clear that these separate and settle: not emulsified properly. One roots so hard for Fenty, that it’s sad to see such poor showings.
The splatter marks are a design feature (outside of the tube) – I think that is what you’re seeing.
woah, really? wow that’s an unfortunate design fail. i looked hard at several different pictures of these tubes and i thought it was separated product, too.
Thanks for clarifying. A splatter print for design on the tube. Hmmm, didn’t help much, lol.
Hmmm…I think I may see the issue, because I actually had a very similar problem with a gel eyeliner I formulated this weekend. In this case the formula relies on lightweight powders for bulking and waxy fatty acids for a film-forming effect, which sounds ideal for a liquid liner, but there needs to be an additional refatting agent (like a seed butter or plant oil/extract) to prevent the dry, patchy/cracked finish and wear you would (and did) experience. My formula had too much of a refatting agent so, instead of dry and cracked, mine looked fairly thick and cakey (you can see it on my Insta, the colors are coincidentally very similar to this trio). For best performance my recommendation would be to apply one layer, allow it to dry, then use a dry eyeliner brush like Morphe JH43 to smooth and blend the color; then repeat with a second layer or until you’ve reached desired intensity. It’s not going to be a one-and-done liner with most of these due to the lighter, brighter hues being less forgiving of the formula’s drawbacks. But if anyone can make them work it’s you, Christine; I’m great at describing how things work and how to fix them, but Holy Moses I’m terrible at applying makeup on myself. It’s one big reason I like being on the science end of things lol.
Thanks for all the work you & your team do to make this website possible. It’s always a good day when I get to interact with errbody on here!
They aren’t blendable at all once they dry down 🙁 I tried using the more problematic shades as more like an eyeshadow base or just trying to diffuse/blend out a bit to see if that would even out the application (as eyeliner), but… no dice.
Thank you Andrew, it makes sense that thick and cakey would be this formula’s polar opposite. I love the bright colors that theses come in, but watery, slow dry down, settling into fine lines, and the crackle finish are all things that make these impractical. Do you think that making something out of mixing gel and powder pigment would be an alternative or would it be a crap shoot as well?
Thankfully, these are definitely NOT my kind of eyeliner shades, or I’d be deeply disappointed! Yikse, these are a horrid formulation.
The white liner would have been my only real purchase from this release but not at this performance and not as part of a trio. I have a white liner that I picked up from Shiseido, I think. I purchased from YesStyle quite a long time ago and that is a really nice liner but it is a pencil and I would like to try a liquid liner. I will have to do some research, LOL! I say, LOL, because research is in my top three things I enjoy doing. I am just one of those people with naturally inquisitive minds.
I wish she had brought these out as pencils instead of liquids, pencils seem easier to formulate in these bright colors.
So disappointing. Kudos for the unusual colors, but the formula just isn’t right for these light neon shades.
This is a bit of a miss and I think the banana shade would have been lovely otherwise.
I’m so glad I waited for your review! I have been thinking about that pink one every day since I saw it online. Won’t be picking that up. I don’t like that kind of brush anyways. I like felt tip applicators.
I also thought the formula was separated in the tubes! I had only seen pictures online. In person I would have seen that it was on the label.
Thanks for doing what you do!
