Vignette

Colour Pop Vignette Velvet Blur Lux Lipstick ($7.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a deep, reddish-brown with warmer undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had medium, buildable pigmentation (to mostly opaque) that applied evenly and smoothly to my lips. The consistency was lightweight, velvety and glided on with ease, but it didn’t feel “wet” when applied or while it was worn. This shade applied much more flatteringly on my lips, too, as it didn’t emphasize my lip lines or pull product into them. It wore well for five hours and was neither drying nor hydrating on me.

Formula Overview

$7.00/0.12 oz. - $58.33 Per Ounce

It's supposed to have a "soft focus, blurring effect" with "buildable" color that can deliver "high impact colour" with a "silky, velvet soft texture" that "smooths over fine lines and imperfections" without "drying out your lips." They have a velvety slip to them, as they're packed with silicone, and so they have that smooth feel as they go over the lips but have a lightweight, almost powder-like finish that makes me think of a "soft matte." From a normal viewing distance, like at a glance in a mirror or another person viewing you while having a face-to-face conversation, as opposed to checking one's lips close-up in the mirror, I saw the "blur" effect--soft, slightly understated color with a matte finish. The lack of opacity in some of them gave them a "softer" appearance to my eye.

That being said, I didn't experience any smoothing, and I haven't personally found that the more silicone-heavy lipstick formulas go that far in smoothing my lip lines; I'd actually feel like they're more likely to emphasize imperfections as the lipstick caught on flakes and settled into lip lines. There were some shades that applied more unevenly and were more prone to settling noticeably in my lip lines than others, and there were a few that applied evenly and were flattering with respect to texture on me as well. As always, I do my best to ensure that I exfoliate my lips regularly and keep my lips hydrated when not testing lip products (at night and the like) to try and have a "good" canvas for lip colors.

The coverage varied from shade to shade with most shades offering medium, buildable coverage, though some of the deeper and more vivid shades were more semi-opaque to nearly opaque in a single layer. The color faded a bit more readily from the center of my lips compared to the outer edges but was fairly even in how they wore down. Only the very deepest/more red-toned shades stained my lips (and only slightly) after wearing them. They seemed mostly non-drying but a few felt a little more drying to me. The formula has a sweet, burnt sugar scent but no discernible taste.

CA Love

Colour Pop CA Love Velvet Blur Lux Lipstick ($7.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a muted, medium coral with warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had buildable color coverage from medium to full coverage (about three passes). The consistency was lightweight, thin without feeling clingy, and velvety–smooth but not wet–and was comfortable to wear for the four and a half hours it lasted for. The color applied evenly, and while I didn’t experience smoothing of my lip lines, there was only a very slight amount of product that sat in my deeper lip lines but wasn’t noticeable from a normal viewing distance. The formula felt neither drying nor hydrating to me while I wore this shade.

I sincerely hope that semi-matte is the new trend. I do love my mattes (bullets, not liquid), but I also like color in general, and it just seems like there are a lot more choices in cream finishes from creamy to glossy — maybe if semi-matte becomes a solid trend, I can not only find lots of amazing choices in non-creamy finishes, but also have almost-matte choices that skirt the sometimes problematic wear of true mattes.

It just didn’t emphasize my lip lines – if it had actually smoothed them out, the verbiage would have been to that effect – that it smoothed out my lip lines instead of just leaving them as-is! 🙂

Definitely my type of shades, especially during the cooler season! CA Love is my favorite of the two, as it just seems more unique to my stash.

Me, too! I wear that type of darker browned red a lot, and I love the finish on this – not so matte that it looks like felt lips. I like that more natural sheen. I’m going to order one.

These are better than the 2 you reviewed before, but I don’t think they are really blurring. CP is not easily available to me anyway, so i’ll just stop thinking about these. I had hopes b/c i wanted to get a couple of the MAC ones, but they disappeared quickly from my local shop.

How similar are these to mac powder kiss lipsticks? They both seem to have basically the same ingredients too so I wonder which one wears better?

Hi Leonah,

You’d have to go shade-by-shade as performance varies between both formulas! There were some decent shades in both ranges and some real misses.
