Bad Habit Cult Mystics Luxe Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches
Mystics
Bad Habit Mystics 10-Pan Luxe Eyeshadow Collection ($24.00 for 0.63 oz.) includes 10 eyeshadows with six shades designed to be wet or dry with a brush and four shades designed to be used with fingertips. The latter four weren’t described to be used wet/dry, but it is the type of formula I’d expect to use either way, so for reference, I swatched those dry/wet. I don’t recommend using the matte shades wet as it seemed to make them harder to use–more prone to patchiness and difficult to blend out.
The matte eyeshadows were extremely powdery and felt thin, which made them have a ton of fallout when applied, have poor adhesion to the lid, and skip when blended as the color adhered unevenly and often disappeared when I tried to blend the color out. They had poor wear and lasted six to seven hours at best.
The Baked Powder shades were the easier shades to work with in the palette, but they had a drier, more loosely-pressed texture that made them more prone to fallout both during application and later on during wear, but they were pigmented, adhered evenly overall, and stayed on for seven to eight hours before creasing. The more shimmery Pressed Powders were dry, almost gritty in texture, which resulted in uneven application applied dry and they had to be used with a dampened brush just to be workable. These were harder to blend out and had some fallout as they dried down. They wore for six to seven hours on me.
I would say that the quality of the Bad Habit palette in general was disappointing — not worth the upcharge (worst palette I’ve tried from them) for their “Luxe” formula, which were some of the worst eyeshadows I’ve worked with this year.

Is Bad Habit Mystics a Dupe for Pat McGrath Subliminal Palette?
This palette looks extremely similar to Pat McGrath’s Subliminal Palette at a glance, but Bad Habit’s version performed significantly below the Pat McGrath palette. The Bad Habit matte eyeshadows were incredibly powdery and more prone to sheering out with some lifting or being challenging to blend out. The shimmery shades in the Mystics palette were chunkier with larger particles, so a shade like Illuminate ended up being brighter than the Pat McGrath version, but then a shade like Karma looked faded and lacked the vibrancy of Pat McGrath’s Blitz Blue. Bad Habit’s Essence wasn’t similar to Pat McGrath’s Lilac Dust in finish nor undertone. Bad Habit’s Altered State was significantly more shimmery than Pat McGrath’s Substance. You can view a side-by-side comparison between Pat McGrath Subliminal Palette vs. Bad Habit Mystics Palette. The shades more complex in Pat McGrath’s Subliminal palette are: Pale Gold 002, VR Violet, and Astral White; about half the palette are more basic neutrals. They are duochrome shades, and you could likely find more dupe possibilities with indie brands (like Fyrinnae) if you’re looking to replicate some of the effect of the Subliminal palette at a lower price point.
Eternal
Eternal is a soft, yellowed beige with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. The consistency was soft, almost cream-like but chunky, which made it easiest to apply with a dampened to brush as this helped the product adhere smoothly to bare skin without being too thick. When I tried it with a dry brush, it had a tendency to look thicker on my lid and emphasized the texture on my lid. The color coverage did not vary between wet/dry application. It creased on me visibly after seven hours.

Resurrection
Resurrection is a medium-dark taupe with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had sheer coverage applied dry, and it was semi-sheer when applied with a dampened brush. It wasn’t buildable, and it remained challenging to blend regardless of dry or wet application. There was a ton of fallout during application, and the color survived six hours on me before fading noticeably.

Essence
Essence is a medium lavender with subtle, warm undertones and a pearl sheen. It had almost no coverage applied dry; I would consider it a worthless product if used dry, as it was dry, gritty, and sheer with no ability to build up and had a ton of fallout on my lid with no staying power (gone in an hour when I tried it dry). Applied with a dampened brush, it was nearly opaque, but I really had to press and push the product onto my lid to get even adhesion, and it did not blend out very easily. Applied wet, it lasted for seven hours.

Transcend
Transcend is a coppery-brown base with iridescent sparkle that shifted slightly from gold to green. The texture was slightly dry and dusty, but it applied well to bare skin with fingertips or a dampened brush. If I used a dry brush, it had some fallout but built up well. The eyeshadow blended out without much effort and stayed on for eight hours with some fallout over time.

Absolution
Absolution is a white gold that shifted from silver to yellow with a metallic finish. It had mostly opaque pigmentation applied dry and opaque coverage when applied with a dampened brush. I did not feel like one had to use a fingertip to achieve pigmentation, but the pressure of fingertips seemed to minimize fallout when working with the eyeshadow (but so did a dampened brush). The texture was slightly drier and a bit loosely pressed in the pan. It wore well for eight hours but had some fallout while worn.

Pagan
Pagan is a medium-dark black with a matte finish. It was extremely powdery and came away in clumps when I pressed my finger against the surface to see how it felt. It had a ton of fallout, blended out poorly, looked patchy, and noticeably faded within six hours. It was an extremely fussy black that resulted in a sooty under eye and little depth in my crease. When I tried it using a dampened brush, it did improve the pigmentation but still had some fallout; I really had to press and pat it onto my lid. As it dried down, it was harder to diffuse the edges but was more usable at least.

Altered State
Altered State is a medium-dark taupe with subtle, warm undertones and a pearly sheen. The texture was drier, almost gritty, with noticeable sparkle/shimmer to the touch. It was very hard to work with dry with a brush as it had a ton of fallout and poor adhesion to bare skin. When I used a dampened brush, it improved the coverage (opaque!) and minimized initial fallout but made the base a little harder to diffuse and blend out, though at least it showed up on my lid that way. It started to look faded after six and a half hours on me.

Vision
Vision is a soft brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation with a fairly soft, only slightly powdery texture–it was significantly better than the other matte shades in the palette–and less prone to sheering out and fallout compared the formulas used throughout this palette. The eyeshadow wore well for seven hours on me before fading noticeably.

Karma
Karma is a deep blue with cool undertones and a metallic sheen. It had good color coverage applied dry but was truly opaque when applied with a dampened brush. The texture was fairly smooth, blendable, and was one of the easier shades to workk with in the palette, but it was prone to fading after applying it. At first, I thought I just over-blended, but after the third attempt to apply the color for vibrancy, it was obvious that it was how the eyeshadow was going to look perpetually–a bit faded. More navy blue than cobalt blue as it had initially appeared on my lash line. The color stayed on well for eight hours before creasing on me.

Illuminate
Illuminate is a bright white base with a duochrome that shifted from blue to teal. The consistency was a bit drier and a little dusty in the pan, but when patted onto the skin with a fingertip or a dampened brush, it applied evenly and had opaque coverage. It wore well for seven and a half hours before creasing but did not have continued fallout.

WOW, these are stunningly bad eye shadows but the look on your is stellar. I love when you shoot head on with your eyes downcast. It is such a good view of the shades and the overall effect on the lid. You must have had to work for hours to get that look with those bad shadows. The things you do for us never cease to amaze me.
It definitely took much longer to try and get the look to come together with the Bad Habit palette. Just one of those times where you can really appreciate the difference in the quality between two products.
A few people in a makeup group I’m in got this, and they said it was awful. Which is too bad, because I like the colors. I got the new SauceBox Nocturne Palette instead, which is in the same vein and of excellent quality.
Glad to hear the palette you got instead worked well, and I’m even happier to hear I wasn’t the only one who was like, what… after this palette. The others from them are significantly better. I was unprepared, LOL.
This is a disappointment after yesterday’s offering, which was really good. No matter what the price point is, you don’t dish up really bad eyeshadows like this and expect your customers to accept it just because it is inexpensive. And the brand can do really good eyeshadows – the blue shade in this palette was excellent. There are no excuses for that otherwise lovely taupe shade..
Gorgeous eye look Christine.
I think the strange part about it is that they called it their Luxe range, making it more expensive and supposedly better but it definitely fell short.
Definitely NOT one of Bad Habits better palettes, yikes! Then again, such cool shades aren’t exactly something I’d be pining for, but for those who do, I feel their pain while looking through the swatches.
I am still surprised at how hard this was to work with!
This is a prime example of how a good swatch doesn’t automatically mean the shadow performs good. Some of these swatches look more pigmented than the original they’re trying to dupe, but poor performance speaks for itself. I was thinking to pick up this palette because no way in hell I’ll be paying $120+ (or whatever obscene amount she’s charging) for PMG, but I don’t need a bad dupe which is going to collect dust in my closet. Money saved. Thank you for reviewing this palette and saving me from a regret purchase.
I wonder what they were thinking here, because they made this a “Luxe” range and are charging almost double, I think, compared to other palettes they have yet the formula was significantly worse. (This is also why I believe it’s a better idea to come up with a solid formula, period, to use across palettes so that the experience is consistent!)
This was an easy pass for me because I have the Pat McGrath palette. This one just didn’t even look that good. I often do have the original. I actually did buy the Hush dupe for the Fenty glitter palette from holiday ’17 without realizing what it was! I actually liked the dupe better in many instances on this particular palette. I got the original on sale because I didn’t think it was worth the hype and if I recall right, it only got a so-so review. I’m too tired to think of names or to get up and look to see if Bad Habit or one of the others (Beauty Creations has done some good ones) did the Fenty dupe. Pat McGrath is a high bar to beat, especially for the Mothership series quality-wise. I treated myself to all from that family except the last one. I know that was a Christine all time fave! A+ if I remember right.
That’s interesting to hear that the dupe of the Fenty Galaxy palette is more to your liking! I think that’s cool when that happens 🙂
I think if they had used the formula from say, the Bad Habit Artistry palette, it wouldn’t have been such a huge discrepancy in general quality (even if the formulas would feel and look a bit different!).
It was Bad Habit that did the dupe of Galaxy. I also have Supernova which is the dupe of Natasha Denona Lila which I passed on. I was impressed with Supernova, it’s really gorgeous and I think buttery describes the texture.
On first glance this palette reminds me A LOT of the Urban Decay Gwen Stefani palette!
I think it’s the blue/gold/black that really make it appear that way! Here is a palette vs. palette for those two: https://www.temptalia.com/palette-vs-palette/?palette_1_search=Bad+Habit+Mystics&palette_1=351346&palette_2_search=Urban+Decay+Gwen+Stefani&palette_2=213651
A shame since I really want Pat’s version, but still can’t purchase it in Europe (without significant shipping, duties and taxes).
I can only imagine the upcharge for shipping/duties/taxes on what is already a pricey palette 🙁
Crazy! 20% plus the taxes, so you figure add in the 20 to 30$
Now Pat’s palette are available on Net A Porter (UK based, so no customs to Europe)
Oh thank you sooo very much! I had been checking Net-A-Porter, but they never seemed like they were going to have the palettes. So glad you told me!!!!!
Ooo, but the added a few bucks to the price, so I still have to pay a tad more. I may just wait for a US Sephora sale, have my daughter buy it and save it for a visit. I can wait (or not LOL!)
I’m re-looking over your review and the looks and boy, you make this palette look like a winner! The swatches and the looks are BEAUTIFUL, better than I think you did with Pat’s. But, so far, every time I don’t listen to your rating, except maybe once, I’ve been burned, so I’m going to restrain myself (I’m biting my hand here LOL) and not go towards this palette. I’ll not visit the site, there! LOL!
I really feel you can see the difference in application with the two eyes, particularly close-up!
Here’s the PMG look’s full details – https://www.temptalia.com/look/a-smoky-blue-gold-look-with-pat-mcgrath-subliminal-palette/
It was struggle just to present the Mystics palette in a look as it it’s posted – definitely not easy to get it to be tolerable enough to post, LOL.
Yeah, you’re right, PMG’s looks smooth. Thanks!
I have the Pat McGrath palette, so no need for this one. A pity though that it performed so badly.
When I get a new palette, I always swatch all the shades. I was a bit disappointed when I swatched the Subliminal palette, but when I used it, it was so good, wonderful to use, easy to blend, pigmented, just a beautiful, working palette.
What I’m going on about is the swatching, a good eye shadow can sometime swatch badly and a bad one swatch quite good. And this is why I trust your reviews, because you actually try everything for real. Job very well done, as usual and a beautiful look.
Subliminal is the “worst” of PMG’s palettes, IMO, though it wasn’t bad (B+). I agree that using it, though, proves that it is easy to work with, which is why I totally agree that swatches aren’t always accurate.
I absolutely love that otherworldly glow you got on the inner corners!
I not into any of these palettes where they copy another brands exact palette. It is just shady in my opinion and not something I would be interested in buying. Some of these eyeshadows look like they are terrible quality. I do understand that everything has been copied in makeup. But it’s the fact that it is the exact same concept no originality at all the really turns me off.
Never heard of this brand and can’t imagine every buying from them. I don’t mind dupes bc everyone does that but this one feels a bit offensive to me because it’s wholesale copying (I don’t have the original one so it’s not like I’m offended that someone is copying something that I spent lots of money to get)
I completely agree! It’s one thing to have some very similar colors and another to completely copy a palette. It irritates me because someone, Pat McGrath in this case, spent a lot of time creating these shadows and the color story. It’s not right to just take all of another person’s work and slap your brand name on it.
HI Christine! Firstly, the look you created is absolutely stunning! Second, can you please let me know what lip color you are wearing?!? It’s gorgeous!!! Thanks so much!
