Best & Worst of Pat McGrath EYEdols Eyeshadows
Pat McGrath EYEdols Eyeshadows ($25.00 for 0.04 oz.) are available today! There are 17 shades available in the singles range with 11 shades from her six-pan palettes and six new shades (Burnished Honey, Crimson Fire, Rose Venus, Corrupt Copper, Statuesque, Synthetica. Overall, the re-released shades (in single format) were consistent with the palette versions with the exception of Celestial, which felt weaker–drier, less pigmented–compared to the one my palette. The eyeshadows were, generally, pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing (upwards of 10 hours on some!).
The eyeshadow pans are not removable, unfortunately, so one would have to depot like any other single eyeshadow–I tried using tweezers and lifting on several shades to no avail. I definitely think making them pop out if desired would have been the way to go. The lids are held closed by a weak magnet, so I’m not sure they’re as secure as most single eyeshadow compacts in my stash–I wish it really locked in, but there’s definitely a magnet that pulls the lid down if it’s within 2mm of the base.
They’re also 0.04 oz. each, whereas the eyeshadow pans found in the larger Mothership and mid-sized MTHRSHP palettes are 0.07 oz. each. That being said, a lot of full-sized eyeshadows are around 0.05 oz. From a cost per ounce standpoint, eyeshadows in the Mothership palettes will run you $178.57/oz., eyeshadows in the MTHRSHP palettes will run you $130.95/oz., and the singles are $625.00/oz. For comparison, MAC (potted) eyeshadows are $340.00/oz., Urban Decay eyeshadows are $400.00/oz., NARS eyeshadows are $475.00/oz., and Tom Ford eyeshadows are $900.00/oz. Pat McGrath’s pricing tends to put the brand at high-end to luxury, sort of mid-way between NARS and Tom Ford, which seems to be where the singles’ price per ounce falls. I think it might have been better to upsize and keep them at 0.07 oz., though.
As always, more isn’t always better; it’s about spending the least amount of money on the most product you’ll actually use. There’s no point buying a palette for $125 if you’re only going to use one or two shades–then you’re paying $50 each! You also have to think about whether you use palettes or do you prefer singles because it does you no good to buy a palette and never use it either. If you’re someone who has been thinking about trying Pat McGrath eyeshadows and one of the MTHRSHP palettes has at least three shades you’d use often (and you’ll reach for a palette), then that would be a better value for you.

I own all of the 11 that are in previous palettes. Of the 6 new shades, I just want 2. I will try to grab them during a sale. I love PMG but it’s a brand that I only allow myself to purchase if there is a sale or I have a gift card.

I love PMG eyeshadows, but at this price point, it makes more sense for me to invest in another Mothership palette. The new shades are not calling me, again due to price point, but also function. I used to be an e/s singles kinda gal, but over the past 5 or so years, I’ve definitely shifted to palettes.

I didn’t, but Sephora put them online today as “coming soon” and said they’d be available on 4/5. Note, only 12 shades are listed on Sephora, though!
Four of these made it into my WL: Lapis Luxury, Divine Mink, Enraptured and for a long ways off, Dark Matter. With 2 of those being within the MTHRSHP Dark Star palette (I think?), then perhaps I ought to see about buying that one instead of the 2 singles.
Lapis Luxury and Divine Mink are too tempting, and they shouldn’t be. I do have UD Plunge and Drift. However, I don’t see either one having the intensity or glow that PMG’s versions have!
I have not tried Pat Mcgrath but these tempt me. I don’t tend to like palettes, so these are a better way to go for me, but the problem is that I see at least 3 I might like to try! So that’s $75 already!
I think Lapis Luxury is my favourite shade, as many of the others I have lots of dupes for (and probably so does everyone else here on this blog). It is worthwhile getting the single shades you absolutely love and will use and these are all of such excellent quality.
Great post, I am going to wait to see if they will release removable option to add to my own palette. I don’t want 3+ compacts floating around in my collection.
I’m such a nerd. I messaged customer service asking if a removable option will be available. Depotting is so risky and it’s also a waste of resources (would throw away the empty compact to add to a customer palette). Maybe they will listen to our wishes.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that! I’ll never quite understand why brands, at this point, haven’t gotten the message that some people like to freestyle their palettes so make it easier on us to do so!

I have my eye on Divine Mink and Lapis Luxury… but if I get both I might as well hold out to see if PMG re-releases Decadence and put the $50 towards that? ?
To be expected, as they are the same shades in her existing palettes, which I have 3 six and 3 12 pans. What I really wish she would do would be to re-release the Decadence palette. Lapis Luxury is the only one I like that I don’t already have but I really want the whole palette. I wish she would have introduced some new.
Even though I have it in the Bronze Sublime palette, I would totally buy a single of Provocatrix. That shade I could totally use with so many palettes. Celestial I am considering.

I own two Pat’s big palettes and I think that those are worth it especially for the few duochrome ultra shine shadows. They are the most unique and undupable. She doesn’t even put them in the six pan palettes…and seems like unfortunately she will not be selling them as singles either.
So satisfying to see that the “worst” from a brand’s line is in the “A” range!
I never thought I would say this, but I’m disappointed. While I’m sure the formula is fantastic, there isn’t one color that I already have from another brand and with a formula that I already like. I hope when the shade range is expanded we get some more interesting options.
