Pat McGrath Subversive La Vie En Rose MTHRSHP Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Subversive La Vie En Rose
Pat McGrath Subversive La Vie En Rose MTHRSHP Eyeshadow Palette ($55.00 for 0.42 oz.) is a new, limited edition six-pan palette that features five shimmery shades and one matte shade. All six eyeshadows had semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation, long-wear, and were blendable. It definitely lived up to the quality one would expect from the Pat McGrath line.

Pale Fire
Pale Fire is a soft, light-medium peachy orange base with peach-to-pink shifting pearl. It had nearly opaque color coverage that applied evenly and smoothly to bare skin. The texture was soft to the touch, blendable, and easy to work with but wasn’t powdery in the pan. It lasted well for eight and a half hours on me.

Formula Overview

Pat McGrath's eyeshadows are, generally, supposed to be "super-saturated" with "creamy, soft textures" and "extreme blendability and adherence without creasing." A lot of how well they perform (and to some degree, how they are supposed to be applied and marketed) depends on the type of shades, but by and large, the eyeshadows perform very much as they are described.
The brand released single eyeshadows in March 2019, and the shades have been consistent in quality, look, and feel. They are not removable, unfortunately, so one would have to depot like any other single eyeshadow--I tried using tweezers and lifting on several shades to no avail. The lids are held closed by a weak magnet, so I'm not sure they're as secure as most single eyeshadow compacts in my stash--I wish it really locked in, but there's definitely a magnet that pulls the lid down if it's within 2mm of the base.
The mattes are velvety, blendable, and dense without being thick or too heavy, and they have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation where a little can go a long way with some of the deeper and richer hues. The satin and pearl finishes are smooth, lightly creamy, and firmer but not dense or thick with good pigmentation, blendability, and easy application. The more metallic finishes tend to be softer, creamy, and smooth with a bit more denseness and no powderiness. The sparkly/glittery shades are often designed to be applied wet for richer coverage or intensity, which has largely been my experience. Most of the shades last between eight and nine hours.

Purple Reign
Purple Reign is a vibrant, deep purple with subtle, cool undertones and a metallic sheen. The texture was soft but denser and slightly thicker, more cream-like than powder-like, but I didn’t have any issues picking it up with typical brushes and could apply it with fluffier brushes as well as flatter, firmer ones. It had opaque color coverage that lasted beautifully for nine hours on me.

Paranormal
Paranormal is a muted, medium-dark eggplant purple with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good color coverage that was buildable to opaque pigmentation in two layers. The texture was soft, slightly dusty, and thin but blended out fairly well but not as velvety as other Pat McGrath matte eyeshadows have been. It stayed on well for eight and a half hours on me.

Rose Risque
Rose Risque is a bright, medium-dark fuchsia pink with subtle, warm undertones and a satin finish. The color payoff was nearly opaque in a single layer, and it was buildable to full coverage in two layers. The consistency was slightly drier and thinner, though very finely-milled and easy to blend out on bare skin. It wore well for eight and a half hours before fading noticeably on me.

This palette is so beautiful and the packaging it great. Finally a pat McGrath I can afford, but I have all but 1 shade of the shadows in a dupe:(
Darn! Here’s hoping she’ll release more of these.
Ditto, as the colors I’d most want to work received the lower ratings (of course I’m pushing there because I really like the palette). What I’d really like is a mix of some of Subliminal & Subversive’s colors, especially her VR’s, Blitz’s and Substance (basically the foils & hot colors).
But at $55 price! Haha
Nooooo…
I saw some terrible swatches on IG and thought this would be a Pass, and now I’m seeing this review, and my drooling over Purple Reign again
Interesting! I have seen a few posts on Reddit and in Temptalia’s Discord that showed good swatches (haven’t seen anything bad on any of the three, actually..).
Mine is beautiful! I think swatches can sometimes be misleading and not indicate quality (like Sugarpill often swatches poorly but wears great on the lid) you can expect on lid. But mine did swatch well though.
Oh Lord! (fans self dramatically)
This is GOOOOORGEOUS!
Take my money, Pat! (flings cash at Ms McGrath)
Oh my, I love this palette. I’ve had this and Bronze Ambition for a week and it is stunning! I hope Pat slows down her shadow offerings or I’m in trouble.
Wow. This has taken my breath away.
I had wanted to haul singles of purple reign (ardency inn & KVD Danzig), plus UD fireball & backfire. Paranormal is a color I have been looking for too. Decisions, decisions…
Oh my god, look at purple reign!
I know, right?!
I almost bought this and I’m glad I didn’t as I already have dupes for all except Paranormal. I think Urban decay Urban is a good dupe for Purpe Reign. I can’t wait for the review on the Platnium one as that was the other palette I was considering.
I’ve been using La Vie en Rose for a few days and when I saw your swatches and review I was initially very confused. Pale Fire in my palette felt rough and hard to the touch, swatched chunky, and did not adhere well to the skin. Purple Reign and Rose Risque wasn’t that pigmented either. But I trust your reviews Christine! So I swirled my finger (medium pressure) to remove the uppermost layer, and now the eyeshadows are much more soft and pigmented. Whew! Thanks for your hard work and thorough reviews!
I’m glad yours is a lot better, but how strange that there was even a top layer!
La Vie En Rose became one of my favorite palettes of all time the moment I swatched it on my arm! But I loved it even before that, though. It definitely earned that “A” grade you gave it! The 2 looks you posted are not only beautiful, but really demonstrate how one can go full-on purple dramatic eye or take it in a softer, lighter direction as well.
(Gold Nectar has officially become my FAVORITE gold eyeshadow! Purple Reign my favorite *true* purple!)
Wow! That is impressive since I know you have tried your fair share of palettes, Nancy!
Lovely. Do you think the eye look would be similar in using the Rose Pink that’s in this palette in the middle of lid (with the Pale Fire) instead of the VR Pink from the original Mothership palette?
Never mind. I see that you did use Rose Pink in your other eye look! 🙂
This palette is beautifully and very, very tempting, but it looks like I have dupes for everything. So I’m going to be strong and pass.
After trying this palette, I thought to myself, I really do have enough makeup already and don’t want to buy anything less than Pat McGrath level again ?. You can apply subtly with a light touch because the texture is so fine. The colors are so couture and on point for spring. It’s like putting fairy dust on my lids, lol.
Seeing your looks with the other little palettes and their bigger companions definitely tempts me to get the others too, because of that darn limited edition label.
Haha! Yes, there is something about the texture of her eyeshadows (particularly the six-pans and Decadence) that is very, very lovely.
Thanks for being specific about the palettes. would you say then that the six pans are a tad better than the previous ones (important for me in my decision to hold out on the colors I’m wanting, because I REALLY want the Subliminal palette as it’s more unique for my collection, but am waiting for the more affordable size).
I don’t personally love eyeshadows that are wet/dry usually, and her larger palettes have several shades that are recommended to be used wet. That’s more a preference!
I would like to add that even though some are recommended to use wet, you don’t have to. I always start with a dry brush and if it’s not as intense as I would like it to be, then I will go in with a wet 2nd layer. I still get good payoff when I use those shadows with a dry brush, that generally I do not feel the need to go in with that 2nd wet layer. Granted, I always use primer when I do my eyes, so that could affect the payoff as well.
Yes, I totally know that you can use them dry, too, as I tried them both ways when I tested the original Mothership palettes 🙂 My preference is simply for eyeshadows that don’t have to be used wet for maximum impact, which is a just a personal preference!
Oh I know, b/c your reviews helped me make the jump to purchase her palettes. I was just leaving that in case jel888 hadn’t had a chance to read them. And it really is down to preference b/c I do like having the option to build up.
Ah, gotcha, you replied to me so my assumption was it was directed at me 🙂
Oh, see I never paid attention to that point (must have missed it in your previous reviews of them, sorry). And as I see you used the six pan on bare skin and they lasted all day, I’m thinking I really should wait for a six- pan set that has what I’m looking (hoping) for, which are muted lavender and blue duo chromes, foils, or metallics with similar colors in mattes too. (And I hope she’ll put the black out either in another six palette or alone because I heard so many good reviews on it).
Thanks!
Really? I found these shadows really dry and expected a lot more for the price.
Someone in the comments said run a finger over with medium pressure to remove the top layer.
I have Platinum Bronze and feel the same way. The matte is hard to blend, and the rest are dry and have to be built up quite a bit. Definitely not terrible but also not buying anymore.
I wore this palette all last week so I could give a fair review on my channel…
I’m happy to not be the only one that feels this way. A friend loves her PM eye shadows so much and I’m just sitting here like “this is it”? I’m a little bummed that I can’t return the palette .
Hi sorry to be nosey but why can’t you return it? Does pm not take returns? Because I know Sephora would
I swatched Bronze Ambition when I was in Spokane yesterday and it was really beautiful. I decided not to pick it up because I really was trying not to get hooked on her eye shadows as they are so expensive. I also have a lot of dupes for the bronze shades and for the shades in this palette but still I am having a hard time resisting. They are just so beautiful.
A stunning palette, filled with very popular shades. Gorgeous eye look Christine. Eurphoria is a beautiful purple shade.
Ugh! I want this so bad. I promised myself no more eye palettes, but this is so beautiful, and has everything I’ve been wanting lately ?
Oh no I already ordered the other two. But owning and loving the natasha denona lila I thought I could skip it. But seeing this review and having no dupes… Is maling me want this!
What a gorgeous palette! Your eye look with Rose Risque and Purple Reign is breathtaking!!!
I already have dupes for most of the shades so I’ll probably have to pass.
I hope Pat Mcgrath changes her mind and adds these 3 new mini palettes to her range. I’m in love with them all.
I grabbed this baby the second it was released on Sephora and I LOVE IT! I am a huge purple and pink fan, so this was everything my soul yearned for, haha! It is dupeable, but the quality of these shadows is so fantastic, I don’t know how well the dupes would stack up in performance.
This is my first Pat McGrath palette and I love it. So happy to experience this quality with the range of shades I most prefer. I hope you she does a green palette.
Or a jewel-toned one… like a really deep, rich one!
Yes to that!!
How much I love this is accurately reflected in the fact that I own the top dupes for 4 out of the 6, the second to top dupe for the 5th and multiple 90% dupes for the last!
Wow, this is beautiful. I can’t bring myself to spend $55 on a small palette though, so I’ll just lust for it from afar…
Such beautiful colours. I particularly like Euphoria. I expect 1 of the 3 6-pan palettes will be my 1st Pat McGrath purchase!
I bought this, and Platinum Bronze as soon as I could, I got them last week and have been using them every day.
I love this palette, it’s one of the best ones I’ve ever owned or tried. That said, when I swatched it when it arrived I didn’t like how it swatched on the back of my hand. On the lids everyone of the shades perform so well it’s hard to believe. I think it might be my very dry hands making the swatches appear so differently.
I love both the looks you did, gorgeous.
Gorgeous looks Christine! I was eager to see what you would come up with and your thoughts on the palette :). Thank you so much!
This palette shall be mine with a few of Pat’s lipsticks (certainly shades paring good with La vie en rose). I love a small cohesive palette…and the finish… <3. Now, I only wish that she will come out with more colorful versions :3.
Christine, so glad to see this positive review! I ordered it last week and have been waiting anxiously for reviews to come in. The purple and plum tones call to me but was hoping these wouldn’t disappoint like so many purples do. I trust your reviews the most so I’m pleased to see this is such a solid palette. Thanks for the prompt review!
That packaging!! Reminds me of the brilliant Rocky Horror Picture Show 🙂
I really want this palette, and I’m trying to hold off until the Sephora Spring sale. My local Sephora had the Bronze one for sale, and I swatched it and I almost caved, but I try to only buy Pat McGrath when I can get some sort of a discount. I do have 2-3 dupes, but Pat’s formula is really hard to beat. I love her shadows and they are worth the money to me. I also find her brand to be very consistent. At least concerning her palettes and lip products. I can’t speak on the earlier offerings b/c I never purchased them.
As of tomorrow, I will have all 3 of these limited editions! This one was the first one I ordered. As soon as I saw Christine’s previews, I knew I had to have this one. I’m a big fan of purple (and green). This one is really gorgeous, especially Euphoria and Pale Fire. I used Purple Reign as an eyeliner.
I like this a lot, but I have Natasha Denona’s Lila Palette, so I am not sure if I “need” this one!
I’ve been eagerly awaiting your review on this palette to purchase it. I went to my Sephora and swatched the “Bronze Ambition” (the only one my store received) and I was floored at the quality of the shades and the beautiful colors. I was expecting this one would deliver and now seeing your looks you have totally sold it to me! =) Thank you!
Wow, this one is pretty amazing!
