Pat McGrath Subliminal Platinum Bronze MTHRSHP Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Subliminal Platinum Bronze
Pat McGrath Subliminal Platinum Bronze MTHRSHP Eyeshadow Palette ($55.00 for 0.42 oz.) includes five shimmery shades and one matte in a smoky, warmer-toned mix of shades. I definitely got “Platinum Bronze” vibes from the color scheme, though the promotional image made it appear a bit cooler in tone than it was in real life (to my eye). The quality was superb, and our wallets would all be in trouble if all brands produced eyeshadow this good.

Platinize
Platinize is a light-medium, golden pewter with subtle, warm undertones and a metallic shine. It was richly pigmented with a smooth, almost cream-like texture that was so soft but not at all powdery. It melted onto my lid and looked shinier after a couple of minutes than it did initially swatched. The eyeshadow wore well for nine hours on me before fading slightly.

Formula Overview

Pat McGrath's eyeshadows are, generally, supposed to be "super-saturated" with "creamy, soft textures" and "extreme blendability and adherence without creasing." A lot of how well they perform (and to some degree, how they are supposed to be applied and marketed) depends on the type of shades, but by and large, the eyeshadows perform very much as they are described.
The brand released single eyeshadows in March 2019, and the shades have been consistent in quality, look, and feel. They are not removable, unfortunately, so one would have to depot like any other single eyeshadow--I tried using tweezers and lifting on several shades to no avail. The lids are held closed by a weak magnet, so I'm not sure they're as secure as most single eyeshadow compacts in my stash--I wish it really locked in, but there's definitely a magnet that pulls the lid down if it's within 2mm of the base.
The mattes are velvety, blendable, and dense without being thick or too heavy, and they have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation where a little can go a long way with some of the deeper and richer hues. The satin and pearl finishes are smooth, lightly creamy, and firmer but not dense or thick with good pigmentation, blendability, and easy application. The more metallic finishes tend to be softer, creamy, and smooth with a bit more denseness and no powderiness. The sparkly/glittery shades are often designed to be applied wet for richer coverage or intensity, which has largely been my experience. Most of the shades last between eight and nine hours.

Smoke and Mirrors
Smoke and Mirrors is a dark brown with warm, reddish undertones and a pearly sheen. The pigmentation was opaque in a single layer, while the texture was creamy, smooth, and easy to blend out on my skin. The eyeshadow applied evenly on my lid and lasted for nine hours before it started to fade a bit.

The texture was lightly creamy (but definitely a powder!), soft without being powdeyr, and easy to work with. It stayed on well for nine hours before there was a touch of fading present.

Deep Velvet
Deep Velvet is a deep brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The consistency was silky, velvety, and finely-milled with a slight powderiness in the pan, but it was easily blended out in my crease and went on evenly. It had rich color payoff that lasted for nine hours on me.

Ritualistic is a medium-dark, taupe-brown with subtle, warm undertones and a metallic finish. It had opaque pigmentation in a single layer, and the eyeshadow went on evenly and smoothly over bare skin. I absolutely love mine! Everyday palette for sure.
I’m sad that this leans warmer than the promotional pics! I have plenty of warm browns and I was looking forward to a nice cool neutral palette.
I’m so glad that this palette performed so well for you. I was hesitant to purchase this as the Sephora reviews were mixed, but I value and trust your opinions so I guess I’ll pulling out my credit card today.
The packaging of these palettes is beautiful
I completely agree with you about these shadows. I purchased without hesitation and so glad I did.
I love all three of them just like I love their big sister palettes+Decadence. But I definitely agree the promotional images/swatches/etc made this one seem a bit cooler toned than it is IRL. I still love it and it’s perfect but I still would love to see a slightly cooler toned version esp since many people will pick between this one and the warmer toned Bronze Ambition.
La Vie en Rose is still my favorite of the little sisters because of its creative colorway and how lovely it is. Plus it’s very different from the big sis Mothership colorways. But the two bronze themed ones are gorgeous and amazing. Plus it’s smart that the first three more accessibly priced palettes have two more neutral options since I’m those always sell well and are useful.
I’ve been especially thankful for PMG’s stellar quality since MUFE switched away from the last iteration of Artist Shadows. Those round pans are still some of the best I own and the color variety is awesome but Pat McGrath’s shadows are just perfect. I’m a customer for life.
Celia, I couldn’t agree more if I tried; La Vie En Rose is truly the Star of the little sisters! I’m nabbing Decadence with the Rouge sale, as long as it’s still available at that time.
Nancy, you will absolutely love the Decadence palette. It’s really in a class of its own.
Yesss… I’m so sorry MUFE changed their Artist Shadow formula. Their new ones just are not the same. But Pat’s shadows more than make up for it. Nancy, I was on the fence about Decadence only because I have the other 3 big palettes…. but that teal color is calling me! And La Vie En Rose is just amazing…. Pat nailed that purple shadow. I’m officially hooked on these palettes!
What a beautiful grouping. These are so my kinds of colours (which probably explains why, yet again, I’ve got multiple dupes for all but one of them – the warm dark brown that I’m not totally crazy about and, to tell the truth, I’ve probably got a dupe or 2 of that also, just not one that is listed!) I so wish these were sold “in store”.
Do I have enough gold/bronze/browns? Yes. But this looks gorgeous, does seem cooler than most palettes these days even if it is warm-leaning, and is actually in my price range! I may not be able to resist.
I bought this palette, it’s my first product from Pat McGrath Labs, and I’m so, so disappointed. The shadows taken separately are good quality mostly – although I think Telepathic Taupe is a mess, I am unable to get it to opaque coverage and it causes major fallout. But taken all together these shades create very dull, muddy looks as they tend to run together. They lack vibrancy, they lack luminosity, and they look nothing on the eye like they do in the pan. I’m returning it. Just my 2 cents.
You described my thoughts on this palette so much better than I could! I’m glad I’m not alone. Maybe I had an unrealistic expectation, but I was disappointed and much prefer my ABH and Viseart Theory palettes.
You perfectly described my concern with this palette, and my basic eyeshadow skills will amplify the muddiness. Passing on this one.
Completely understand. The only ‘brown’ palette ever to work on me was KVD Monarch, that I never would have chosen, except for Temptalia. And that worked bec of judicious underblending. You might try fewer colors and minimal blending of the edges only. Not that i’m any fount of knowledge. I just have the same problem in general with bronze, brown tones.
This was my reaction as well! I wanted so badly to love it but was disappointed.
I also see nothing taupe about Telepathic Taupe! Ritualistic is more taupe, not to mention I’d love it as a single! I’m bummed that the color scheme is warmer than it had appeared.
Thank you so much for your 2 cents!! I was gonna buy this and I thought it was cooler but don’t care for muddy, really dark eye looks. I’d like to try Pat McGrath shadows but they don’t seem to be too cohesive and the bright one is pretty Ann’s I have the bright huda and Viseart.
Hopefully in the future?
I was hoping this would be more cool-toned – I‘ve been on the hunt for a specific cool taupe shade and have bought too many shades hoping they‘d be the one. Smoke and Mirrors looked perfect in most pictures and other swatches, and the rest of the palette seemed to be perfect shades for me to conplete any look I‘d want with it. Unfortunately I have enough too-warm shades and wouldn‘t get enough usage with this palette. But now that I know that this isn‘t my possible dream palette, I‘m taking another look at La Vie en Rose!
La Vie en Rose is gorgeous!
Ooo, pretty look!
I ordered this sight-unseen and also thought it would be cooler-toned. It’s not exactly what I hoped for, but it’s also not ultra-warm like so many palettes right now so very wearable for me (and many, I would think). The quality is excellent and it’s versatile enough to go super-smoky or not. I was able to do a pretty toned-down look with it for a business meeting (casual business).
The packaging IS gorgeous but I will say it’s a tad hefty for travel. Wouldn’t have minded it a little slimmer, but I’ll find a spot in my bag next time I fly anyway …
ugh whyyy. I was so hoping this was a cool toned palette. I dont have any of the colors so I may submit but still I am a little sad.
I feel like if Sextrovert was swapped out and a more purple cool toned Ritualistic I would be stoked.
It’s funny how I didn’t think I’d want this one….but after reading its review, and noticing that one could take this in a warmer or cooler direction, I may just need it!
I’m bummed about this one – it’s just so much darker than I thought it would be 🙁 This is just personal preference, but Platinum Bronze is really dark, Bronze Ambition is really orange/ brassy, and La Vie en Rose really bright. No good fit for me, I must be one picky goldilocks!
I’m with you. I bought this (and am awaiting shipping) as I thought this would be as close as I could get to an office wearable palette and wanted to try her line. While her larger palettes are stunning, I’m apparently a very basic person and hope she puts out a cooler/lighter palette.
I continue to resist the temptation and only hope I can hold strong. I will have to see what is available when the Sephora sale comes around. I think I would pass on this one just because it is so neutral but La Vie En Rose is continuously calling my name! One thing I did notice when I swatched this in Spokane is that these are the type of shadows that do not require a great deal of blending. I think doing so would result in an over-blended muddy mess. Very slight blending at the edges and they will work perfectly. I
have experienced this in Natasha Denona palettes and I think was the reason I didn’t really like the one palette I have of hers as they seemed to blend to a mess. I seem to be mentioning Tara a lot but I watched how she applies her shadows and have mimicked her process and have had better success personally.
This reminds me of the MUFE Volume One palette I believe. Only reason why I’ll be skipping this one. Since it’s so similar and I own that palette.
What a sensational collection of beautiful, wearable shades -suitable for both day and night. Just heavenly and not one single dud in the palette. Stunning eye look Christine.
I’m bummed, I was really excited to see a cool toned neutral palette. Oh well money to spend on something else. Lol
Your pictures look so much more warm-toned than the ones on the Sephora website. I think I will be picking this one up now!
I do wish this ran cooler, because cool taupes are my HG – but honestly I still love it!
While I’m happy to see this get such a great review, I’m disappointed that the overall palette seems darker and warmer than I expected. This was the one I was most interested in since I have dupes for many of the shades in La Vie en Rose.
I guess I’ll just have to hope that she will continue to release more palettes like these, but with some of the cooler shades that so many of us seem to want.
I almost fell for this. But then I realized I seldom wear taupes and grays in metallic formula. I hope she does something like the MTHRSHP palettes in the special shades range.
I own all of Pat McGraft palettes but this one. I’m sure I’ll get it, hopefully during a sale. I’m enjoying the other small palettes and can’t wait to incorporate them with the larger ones. This seems cool toned for a warm toned lover like me
I totally agree that this palette is superb 🙂 I’ve been loving on mine pretty much constantly since I got it! The matte shade, Deep Velvet, is particularly wonderful because it blends like a dream without losing any colour intensity, if that makes sense. But all of the shades are fabulous.
Like everyone else is saying, I was hoping Ritualistic was a purple toned color and the whole palette was a bit cooler and lighter. Really, really beautiful and still tempting, but I think I will hold off on this one.
I would have Lulle’s issue, i know. When she does REAL taupes, greiges, grays, esp in a little sister, so there! Found it hard to believe this is the ‘cooler’ palette. Clearly her development team knows that aficionados really want some cool/cool and colorful palettes. Bring it!
I’m almost angry about how gorgeous these palettes are! With the price point, it’s going to be so hard to say no. The stunning packaging is just icing on the cake!
I’m still praying for the day Pat McGrath releases single eyeshadows.
I have this palette, and I love it.
I find the eye shadows in it so easy to work with.
Love this palette! I did use a transition shade from one of her other palettes to complete an eye look. Love the other two new ones as well as the larger 4 palettes. These newer smaller ones will work well for travel, and I bought two MAC shades to use as transition shades for all three palettes. You’re absolutely right, the packaging gives off vibes of a cooler palette, but these shades are not all cool, but slightly warm.
