Not a Basic Peach

Wet ‘n’ Wild Not a Basic Peach Color Icon Eyeshadow 10-Pan Palette ($4.99 for 0.35 oz.) is a rollercoaster of a palette with highs and lows. I normally spend around 10 minutes per eye (from planning to finished look) when working with a moderate amount of colors and contrasting hues, but I spent a half hour just fussing with the shades to get something half-decent out of it. There was a ton of product underneath my eye after all was said and done. There were a couple of nicer shades in the palette, but it’s not a palette I’d use again and while cheap, not something I’d recommend.

Not a Basic Peach #1

Not a Basic Peach #1 is a rich, medium-dark brown with warm, orange undertones and a matte finish. It had excellent pigmentation with a smooth consistency that was lightly powdery but workable on the lid with minimal fallout during application (but a primer would be nice to use with this one). The color wore well for seven hours on me.

FURTHER READING: Formula Overview for details on general performance and characteristics (like scent).

Formula Overview

-

The formula is supposed to be "powerfully pigmented" with a "butter-soft" texture that "glides on like a dream." The majority of the eyeshadows are on the drier side, sometimes feeling loosely pressed and other times more chalk-like and truly dry to the point where a primer became a must for getting good adhesion and wear out of the formula. Most of the matte shades were quite pigmented, and I found they actually applied better to bare skin than some of the shimmers, which often appeared faded and muted in practice compared to how they appeared in the pan. The pigmentation varied from decent to mostly opaque depending on the shade, and the wear was typically between five and seven hours on me.

I did not keep most of the previously-released trios and palettes from the brand as mine, but when I compared 2018's formula to the prior one (and mine are likely five or more years old), the previous formula was far better for their shimmers--slightly more slip, creamier in feel, and typically more pigmented and true-to-color on the lid. I think the mattes, overall, are improved as they are more blendable and pigmented on the lid.

Not a Basic Peach #2

Not a Basic Peach #2 is a light-medium, bluish-teal with faint golden pearl. It had semi-sheer coverage, which did not build up and did not improve much over primer. The texture was drier and harder to blend out on the lid without getting product everywhere. It lasted for five hours on me.

Not a Basic Peach #3

Not a Basic Peach #3 is a medium orange with warm undertones and a satin finish with flecks of pink sparkle. The pink sparkles didn’t translate onto the lid, just fell off the lid or got trapped in my brush. The texture was somewhat powdery, but it still managed to have mostly opaque coverage and blended out decently. It wore well for six and a half hours on me.

Not a Basic Peach #4

Not a Basic Peach #4 is a bright, medium orange with warm, yellow undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was decent and buildable to mostly opaque coverage with two to three layers. The consistency was somewhat powdery and had a tendency to go on unevenly over bare skin but was easier to work with over primer. It stayed on well for seven hours on me before fading.

Not a Basic Peach #5

Not a Basic Peach #5 is a light beige with warm, yellow undertones and a pearly sheen. It had good pigmentation but was incredibly powdery and dry in the pan, which resulted in a lot of fallout and a tendency to sheer out when applied to the skin without a good primer underneath it. On me, it wore well for six and a half hours.

Not a Basic Peach #6

Not a Basic Peach #6 is a light peach with warm, yellow undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff in a single layer, which wasn’t buildable. The texture was powdery and dry, and this impacted the application as it sheered out too quickly and seemed prone to fading. It lasted for six hours on me at best.

Not a Basic Peach #7

Not a Basic Peach #7 is a deep brown with subtle, cool red undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was semi-opaque, somewhat buildable, but the drier, thinner texture made it hard to apply evenly. I tried it over primer, and it was better, but I had to fuss with it quite a bit to get decent results out of it. This shade stayed on well for seven hours on me before fading noticeably.

Not a Basic Peach #8

Not a Basic Peach #8 is a medium plum with warm undertones and flecks of gold pearl. It had sheer coverage, which only sheered out further when applied to bare skin. The consistency was extremely dry and almost gritty as it was so loosely pressed in the pan. There was a lot of fallout during application, and my lid ate the eyeshadow whole within three hours of wear.

It had good pigmentation with a slightly drier, more loosely-pressed consistency that applied better with a dampened brush, which helped minimize fallout and kept the intensity truer-to-pan. It wore well for seven hours on me with some fallout over time.

Not a Basic Peach #10

Not a Basic Peach #10 is a medium gold with warm, yellow undertones and a pearly sheen. The consistency was slightly dry, which resulted in a more powdery feel that muted the shimmery effect on my lid. It had opaque coverage that lasted for six and a half hours before fading noticeably on me.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear! A lot of these are colours I don’t wear but, for the price, I figured that I’d get it for the 3 I really like (assuming I could find it here in Canada). But with these poor ratings almost across the board, it’s not worth even looking for.

I wonder if something happens you some of these palettes inn shipping such as heat because I own this same palette and had a completely different experience. The shadows were very soft and buttery. They all blended well and wore beautifully all day on me.. Because of this I went and bought two more of these palettes and have had basically the same results. Although one palette was so soft that I did have quite a bit of fall out but nothing that would prevent me from reusing. To be honest I was actually surprised at the quality considering how cheap they are. I have heard other good reviews too so I am very curious as to how often we each receive different quality and why.

I have this palette as well and while the purple shade was dismal and the rose gold glittery shade is a bit loosely-packed and fallout-prone the other shades apply and wear beautifully so I wonder if there is a quality control issue here. I own a wide range of shadows from WNW to Viseart, TF etc. so I feel my expectations are not especially low. Mainly I look for blendability and wear time, pigmentation can vary as long as the shadows are somewhat buildable. I really don’t care how inexpensive the shadows are if they are crappy but I enjoyed this palette and oddly had none of the issues Temptalia experienced ?

Discussion time!!!!! Okay so I’ve been doing some thinking and I’m wondering if one of the issues is Shipping. I purchased the Rose` in the Air palette from my local HEB (Texas chain of grocery stores) and I love the way it performed. However, my not a basic Peach palette was shipped directly from Wetn’Wild in an order that I placed with them. Additionally, I found that the liquid lipstick I ordered in the order I made from Wet’n’Wild was not as good as their usual quality. (I usually purchase it in store) Just some food for thought!

Wow, what a disappointment- I thought this new formula was supposed to be an improvement! As always I love your honest and thorough reviews!

Almost picked this up the other day because it was finally in stock, but I know I haven’t been reaching for my drugstore palettes lately so I passed over it. Even though it’s only $5, I didn’t want to waste the money on something I knew I wouldn’t use. Now that I read this I’m glad I didn’t get it!

I wonder if Wet N’ Wild got over hyped and compromised quality for the sake of having more product for their much larger recent audience. I still stand by my statement that had they invested more time and money into them that I’d be fine spending upwards of $6-7 for a more consistent product.

I’m still feeling personally attacked by the coral-peach and shimmery blue. Unacceptable.
