Viseart Libertine Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches

Libertine

Viseart Libertine 9-Pan Eyeshadow Palette ($49.00 for 0.49 oz.) is a new, permanent palette that’s exclusive to Beautylish. It contains five matte shades and four shimmer shades. Three of the five mattes are “sheer matte pigments,” which are marketed as a wet/dry formula. If you’re someone who wants to be able to use every shade easily in a palette and wants them to perform similarly to each other, I’d look at a different Viseart palette. If you’re into using your eyeshadows as eyeliners, you may appreciate the new finish/formula found in this particular palette. I highly recommend reading through the way the palette is supposed to be used before purchasing it to ensure that it will work for your application style.

I would expect that the brand and its creator would be the best to describe the formula of this palette, which is what I’m deferring to, but I do find that this palette is less consumer-friendly and more pro-friendly. Within the Libertine palette, one will find two new formulas, which are labeled as pigments and are specifically “not” creamy in texture (and they are, in fact, a little drier and a touch grainy). For example, Empowered is described as usable for “all over” as a “wash of color” or “wet as an eyeliner.” Defiance is described as a “hard pressed tattoo pigment” that can be “used as an eyeliner” but for “all over color” one is to “blend carefully.” Debauched can be used “all over” but is listed as a “hard pressed sheer matte fuchsia pigment.”

I reached out to Viseart/Anastasia on the new formula, and from that conversation, these were my takeaways: they have a similar ingredient list but they are pressed significantly harder in order to be able take more water (as they are designed to be used wet or dry as liner) but that they are packed with extra pigment to balance.

Rebellion

Rebellion is a soft, light-medium beige with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque pigmentation in a single layer with a soft, silky texture that was substantial but not too thick or dense. It wore well for eight hours on me before fading noticeably.

Formula Overview

-

The eyeshadow formula is supposed to be "pigment[ed]" with "smooth and even application" that is "long-lasting." The matte shades are typically semi-opaque to opaque but buildable with soft, velvety textures that can sometimes be a little powdery or slightly firm, depending on the shade. I find that the mattes are often best suited to someone who likes control over pigmentation and may prefer to build up color; they regularly perform better in practice than just swatched on the arm as well.

The shimmer shades range from satin to metallic, and the more metallic shades tend to feel creamier to the touch, while the satin ones have a fine pearl to them that looks almost melted on the lid once blended out. Both the mattes and shimmers are blendable and easy to work with. Most of Viseart's eyeshadows wear between seven and nine hours on me.

Unleashed

Unleashed is a rich, medium-dark gold with strong, warm orange undertones and a metallic sheen. The texture was soft, lightly creamy, and smooth to the touch, which made it a dream to work with as the eyeshadow applied evenly and smoothly to bare skin with opaque coverage. This shade stayed on well for eight and a half hours on me.

Empowered

Empowered is a medium-dark plum with subtle, warm undertones and a satin finish. It had good pigmentation in a single layer, which was buildable to full coverage with a second layer. That being said, it was listed as a “sheer matte” that could be used as a “wash of color” dry or “wet as an eyeliner.” It did appear softer and more faded in color dry but the coverage was much greater than sheer. When I tried to use it with a dampened brush, it worked well for eyeliner purposes but became difficult to smudge/blend out so I’d recommend only using it with a dampened brush for lining but using a dry brush for any other uses. It lasted for just over eight and a half hours on me before fading noticeably.

Resistance

Resistance is a light-medium, taupe-brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had rich color coverge with a smooth, blendable texture that wasn’t too soft nor too firm in the pan, so it adhered well to bare skin without issues of fallout. The eyeshadow wore well or eight and a half hours on me.

Boundless

Boundless is a medium-dark red with warm undertones and a pearl finish. The pigmentation was opaque in a single layer, while the texture was soft, slightly dry to the touch, but it blended out easily and stayed on well for nine hours on me.

Chant

Chant is a medium plum with soft, warm undertones and a frosted sheen. The consistency was smooth, lightly creamy, and blendable without having fallout, as the eyeshadow adhered well to bare skin. It had rich color coverage that lasted well for eight and a half hours on me.

Defiance

Defiance is a deep, navy blue with cool undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was semi-opaque to opaque when applied dry and more opaque applied with a wet brush. I did find that it applied better and worse depending on the attempt, but it was a very dense, firm shade that stuck to my skin like glue, which is where the advance to “blend carefully” must come into play if one tries to use this as a typical eyeshadow. While it was described as a “sheer matte,” it wasn’t sheer dry or wet. To get the most even coverage, it should be used with a dampened brush, but I would stick to using it as eyeliner as it became extremely difficult to blend once I used any water with it. I was able to diffuse the edges decently when I used it dry on my lid, but it did take extra time. It wore well for nine hours on me and stained faintly. I think if you intended to use this as an eyeliner, it will work well for that purpose, but if you wanted a navy blue you could use and blend out without much effort, you’ll be disappointed.

Shameless

Shameless is a muted, almost blackened teal with subtle, cool undertones and a frosted finish. The color payoff was opaque in a single layer, but it seemed more loosely-pressed so there was a bit of kick up in the pan. It applied evenly to my lid, blended out nicely, and lasted for eight hours on me.

Debauched

Debauched is a muted, medium purple with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. This was described by the brand as a “hard pressed sheer matte fuchsia pigment.” Effectively, it could be used “all over” the lid as a wash of color or used with a wet brush for more intense coverage for lining. The texture was drier, slightly grainy to the touch, which was actually a warning by the brand (that they would be “less creamy”). It had sheer to semi-sheer coverage, and it did not build up too much on its own, but it was fairly blendable when I used it dry. If I used it wet as a lid or crease color, it was real bear to blend as the product adhered strongly wherever it initially landed and often darkened in some places more than others. As an eyeliner, I was able to wet my brush and get a cleaner, more opaque line. It lasted for eight and a half hours on me and stained slightly. It lived up to expectations based on what the brand set, but if you’re looking for a more typical eyeshadow and a fuss-free experience, you’ll likely be disappointed.

I suspected this was a very good palette despite the patchiness of the mattes in your swatches. I love the color story here and your look is to die for. For those that loved Anastasia’s Subculture, this would probably be another great purchase. I am on a low buy (not sure where I would store one more palette, even a small one, lol) but I might pick this one up anyway.

I actually wouldn’t compare the formula to Subculture myself (nor potential issues one might experience), but if you meant the color story, then that’s wholly subjective 🙂

Actually I meant this palette might appeal to those who don’t mind working with a palette. I have read so many comments about Subculture (people seem to either love or hate it), and I was thinking maybe the people who loved Subculture despite the need to figure out how to best use the shadows would likewise be comfortable working with Libertine.

But I can see how it would not be right to put Libertine and Subculture in the same category, as Subculture definitely had quality issues and it appears that Libertine does not.

Thank you for the thorough review. Your thoughts go far beyond whether or not you like or dislike the product, and this helps readers make an informed decision on purchasing.

What I’m getting from this palette is a very artsy 80’s MTV music video or club vibe. Something of which I don’t personally find intimidating or too OTT, because I used to use these very pigment saturated eyeshadow formula back in the day when creamy powders did not yet exist. However, I have been in a creative ruts lately. So, perhaps I’ll consider this once my mind goes colorful and avant garden once again.

( I do really love what you did with it! Very 80’s, very cool! 😎)

Kind of disappointed by the performance of Debauched, Defiance and Empowered, the three shades that stood out for me. I’m glad I didn’t order it. Thank you Christine for your review!

Hmmm – this is an interesting palette. I like the mix of shades and the colours are very pretty. But, the way they work and are to be successfully applied, does not make them user friendly. I think this is a mistake by the brand to create a palette that is so tricky to use – look what happened to Subculture.
Gorgeous eye look Christine.

Arrrghh… First look at this colour scheme made me really want it (I really don’t need it though, you know what I mean I’m sure, but it’s very me). Then your swatches a few days made me decide to pass, they didn’t look too flash. But now that I’ve read the explanations, I want it again!!

That dark tattoo blue, it is the most stunning, deep, rich, intriguing and seductive blue I have seen in an eyeshadow probably ever.

So, um, THANKS A LOT! 😂

I dunno man, “hard pressed pigment” and “tattoo pigment” (???) sure sound like “we screwed up this eyeshadow formula and we’re selling it as a feature rather than a bug” to me.

Like…regular eyeshadows can be used wet as liner perfectly fine. People have been doing it for decades. It’s one of the uses Inglot advertises Duraline for. And you don’t have to a) win a knife fight with your eyeshadow to use it as an eyeshadow, or b) have giant pans of water-activated fuchsia cake eyeliner sitting around.

Not all matte eyeshadows can be used wet without it impacting the surface of the powder (can give it “hard pan”) – some absolutely can but it’s not a given with mattes, in my experience! These you can dip into with a wet brush. But you can pick up any product and then wet the brush *after* to avoid possible hard pan issues 😉

My thoughts exactly. Even if I’m concerned with hard pan, I just always use a wet brush in the same corner of the pan so the rest is unaffected.
If it’s really a feature they were after, why? Who needs that kind of shadow? You can create a soft wash with any shadow that’s buildable. You can find a liner in any color these days, pencil or liquid. Who needs this type of pressed pigment, what does it bring that you can’t find elsewhere in a more convenient format?

Wow Christine this look is so stunning!
I found the palette uninspiring to use on its own (too many colors, kinda all over the place) but when I saw what you did with it, it went BOOM!

I have this and absolutely love it. I don’t have much in the way of skills… and I haven’t had any issues with it. The wash of color that the orchid and dark blue give is perfect for me. I have had to clean up a little under my eye but not bad at all. Similar to what I have to do with any heavily pigmented shadow. I tend to do simple looks with about three colors and find this to be wonderful to work with.

Thanks for the informative review! I almost wish that they formatted the mattes that are meant to be used wet differently, either with a different shaped pan or something along those lines. It’s super confusing to grab a palette and think “wait, is this the shadow best used like this or is it the other deep shade?” I know that brands are starting to call different shades a different category ie “presses pigment” vs “shadow” to indicate best use, but I’m not about to have google open while trying to complete an eye. If brands want the user to use a shadow a certain way, make it clear on the package please!

Also, Christine, how you’re able to take every single color in an eyeshadow palette and not only create a cohesive look, but also get every color to stand out, boggles my mind. You’re so talented!

I just got this palette last week, and it is already the palette I know will be my favorite this fall and winter. I would not call myself an expert – more of an advanced beginner and enthusiast 🙂 I had a different experience with the navy one than you did – but I think that was because I laid down Rebellion as a base all over before I used the navy (I would imagine a powder foundation might also provide enough slip). Don’t get me wrong – it wasn’t the effortless blend I get from the neutral mattes palette or even the fawn and ivory color in this palette, but I wouldn’t call it difficult either. Just took a little more time and patience – no grabbing though. I did not try it wet for anything other than liner though. I did a navy smokey eye that is probably the best smokey eye I’ve ever done. I’m going to try to follow your eye look next Christine – it’s phenomenal.

Okay, I don’t know what to do. I have three dupes @90% (look very close on the pictures Resistance, Boundless and Defiance, but nothing for the other colors (except an 85% on a gold, but it doesn’t look quite as pretty). I really like the cohesion (color scheme for this palette) and it would be unique and compact. I do like to use eyeshadows as eyeliners (I pretty much do all my looks like that) and each shadow doesn’t have to perform the same (I sort of expect that due to Natasha Denona’s palettes). I have only one question, does it have more or similar fallout compared with Golden Hour (which I wasn’t too crazy about, but I can work with it)?

Okay I did side by sides of Golden Hour & Libertine and they look like they’d make such partners! The highlight color is the only pseudo dupe. I’m thinking it will work. 😉
