Viseart Highlight/Contour (01) Blush Palette
Viseart Highlight/Contour (01) Blush Palette ($80.00 for 0.84 oz.) is a six-pan blush palette that is the same size (and contains the same amount) as the eyeshadow palettes. It comes in a black plastic compact with a clear lid. The highlighting shades are on the left, while the contouring shades are on the right. The formula used for the highlighters is really nice–dense, buttery, and blendable–and feels similar to their shimmery eyeshadows, while the formula used for the contour powders is more like the powder blush formula. The formula is supposed to “apply seamlessly” and have “sheer to fuller coverage.” Generally, the pigmentation was buildable from medium coverage, fairly blendable, and long-wearing (eight to nine hours); I only had issues with the two deeper contour shades, as they weren’t as easily blended and diffused on the skin as the other four shades. Unfortunately, that accounts for 1/3 of the palette being problematic, and at this price point, that’s likely to be a deal-breaker.
Highlight #1 is a light beige with warm undertones and a luminous sheen. It had medium coverage that was buildable to opaque coverage, while the consistency was soft enough that it could be diffused and blended out for sheerer coverage, if desired. The texture felt smooth to the touch, blended easily, and sat well on the skin without emphasizing pores. On me, it wore well for eight and a half hours. Highlight #2 is a light-medium, rosy copper with warm undertones and a frosted, slightly metallic sheen. The consistency was dense, creamy, and easy to work with on the skin as it blended out beautifully. The coverage was buildable from semi-sheer to mostly opaque (within two to three layers). This shade started to fade after nine hours of wear. Urban Decay Glint (-, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). Becca Beach Nectar (LE, $38.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Highlight #3 is a medium, coppery-brown with warm, gold and orange shimmer. It had semi-sheer to opaque, buildable coverage, which was easy enough to layer without it looking heavy or emphasizing the skin’s natural texture. The consistency, though, was a little drier and felt looser in the pan, so it had a tendency to sheer out initially and took some extra effort to even out. Smashbox Blow a Fuse Gold (PiP, )(95% similar). Melt Cosmetics Sundown (P, $22.00) is more shimmery, lighter (95% similar). Bobbi Brown Bronze Glow (P, $48.00) is warmer (95% similar). Contour #1 is a light-medium brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was buildable from sheer to semi-opaque. It had a soft, silky consistency in the pan but did kick up an excess amount of product in the pan. Luckily, it did not appear dry or chalky on the skin; on me, the color did disappear as it is closer to my skin tone, but it would show up more noticeably on someone with fairer skin. The color lasted for eight and a half hours on me. As a note, it is one of the lightest contour shades I’ve come across! Make Up For Ever S116 (P, $23.00) is darker (95% similar). Zoeva Heavy Crown (PiP, ) is darker (85% similar). Charlotte Tilbury Nudegasm (Sculpt) (PiP, ) is darker (80% similar). Make Up For Ever S112 (P, $23.00) is warmer (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Contour #2 is a medium-dark brown with subtle, warm, reddish undertones and a matte finish. While the powder felt soft and finely-milled, it was also a little grainy, as the powder clumped together here and there and did not even out as nicely as anticipated. When I tried it on my face, it blended out better there when I used a fluffier brush, but it was still not as even as I would have liked. The color wore well for eight and a half hours, and it was buildable from sheer to semi-opaque. NARS Paloma Contour (PiP, ) is warmer (95% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Moonlit Violet Sculpt (LE, ) is more shimmery, lighter, cooler (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty The Afternooner (Bronzer) (LE, ) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Tan Tint (LE, $29.50) is warmer (85% similar). ColourPop Happy Hour (P, $8.00) is warmer (85% similar). Tarte Sculpt (PiP, ) is lighter (90% similar). Kevyn Aucoin Deep (P, $44.00) is more muted (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Moss Agate Sculpt (LE, ) is more shimmery, cooler (80% similar). Zoeva Unfinished (PiP, ) is lighter (80% similar). Contour #3 is a deep, purplish burgundy with a matte finish. It is a “cooler” contour, though it is more neutral-to-warm in actual undertone, but the burgundy color makes it more unique compared to most contour shades. The problem with this shade was the grainy texture that was harder to blend out, but it also seemed to “sink” into pores–my skin looked dotted with deeper specks of color. It had sheer to semi-opaque color payoff that lasted for eight and a half hours. Iconic London Sunset Bronze (P, $27.00) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Sketch (P, $24.00) is darker (90% similar). elf Deep-Rich (P, $9.00) is cooler (85% similar). Milk Makeup Spaced (P, $24.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). Salt New York Deep (P, $16.00) is cooler, glossier (85% similar). Fenty Beauty Toffee Tease (P, $32.00) is more shimmery, darker, glossier (85% similar). Aww, what potential! My heart started beating fast when I saw the preview of this palette only to find that the contour shades aren’t great.
I was unpleasantly surprised 🙁
It’s a shame that you had trouble with the deeper shades, especially since there aren’t very many dupes for the last one. For such a price, that swatch is definitely underwhelming.
I agree – it was a rare shade, but the texture is so off.
Wow, that last shade looks horrible. I think this kit might be good for a MUA, but most folks won’t be able to use all 6 shades. Love that last pic -so dramatic!
Very true – hard for a regular customer to use ’em all!
Hmm, the *only* thing I can think of to make those 2 darker contour shades blend out better, would be to put them over a thin layer of the super light one or a face powder? Not sure, but probably would also do better over foundation, as well. I know that you don’t use foundation in the cheek area when testing cheek products, but maybe on a non-testing run just to see?
It helps but doesn’t fully fix it, IMO! 🙁
Wow. In that case, I’ll be skipping on this one completely. Because $80 and 2 dud shades out of 6 is no bueno. ?
This is not something I’d buy for myself. If I was a pro though and the sculpt shades were better, I’d buy it in a heartbeat!
I can definitely see it working better for a kit!
I was thinking that the last, the burgundy contour colour looked quite good, and then I read the review. Ouch! For me, I’d not buy a palette of highlight and contouring products as there would always be some of the shades that would get little to no use.
I think in this particular palette I’d use half of the products, making it very expensive indeed. And one of the products I would have used performed badly.
Easy skip for me.
It would be quite pricey for only three!
I would definitely use the left half of this palette – the colours are subtle and beautiful. But, alas, I am not into contouring – so the second half would be wasted. These are gorgeous shades and if you were into both, this palette would be worth it.
Definitely not worth it if you would only use half of the palette!
You might wish to check out Fiona Stiles’s highlighting palette. It’s subtle and somewhat reminiscent of the light side of the Viseart. It’s warmish overall, but nothing yellowy. To me, it’s a warm pink, a coppery leaning peach, and a mildly bronze. It’s Brit, so it should be down under. I’m probably 2 decades older than you, and is in no way OTT on me.
I don’t think this is necessary for a non-MUA. The two darkest contour shades look awful.
I agree – it isn’t as versatile for most consumers vs. artists!
Why can’t anyone make a decent cheek product like sculpting 3? I major love that color and a good one eludes us!
I was in disbelief at the texture when I was working with it. Just did not feel like Viseart quality at all!
That shade reminds me of the 4 Dark sculpt pan From the Make Up For Ever Sculpt kit. it’s a red based deep brown as well but I get the feeling this on is a touch reader.
I’m still a little confused by the Contour #1 pale camel shade….. that be also a bronzer on pale skin.
