Recently, there have been five new shades of Urban Decay 24/7 Velvet Glide-on Eye Pencil ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.) released. The Velvet formula is “more powdery” than the regular formula, which is supposed to make it easier to blend and smudge out the eyeliner, if desired, for a smoky eye. Otherwise, it’s supposed to have all the long-wearing benefits of the original formula. The consistency definitely has that drier, more powdery feel that the brand talks about, and as a result, it doesn’t apply as evenly as the original pencils do. It just doesn’t glide-on as effortlessly. I find these apply best in short, small strokes and apply better as they warm up against the skin. Due to their dryness, getting really crisp, defined lines seems to be harder, so a smudging brush or tool helps to soften that edge so it looks better and more even. They wear fairly well on me, lasting at least eight hours, and either fade lightly or show some signs of smudging.

Urban Decay Cult 24/7 Velvet Glide-on Eye Pencil ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “deep, smoky matte green.” It’s a muted, medium-dark green with subtle, warm undertones and a very matte finish. It had mostly opaque color in a single stroke and was easily layered. The consistency was soft and glided on fairly well, but I still find that this formula is best applied in short strokes, rather than in fluid motions. It wore well for eight and a half hours before starting to thin slightly. MAC Devotion (P, $20.00) is the only shade that is even remotely similar, but it is brighter and shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Urban Decay Lure 24/7 Velvet Glide-on Eye Pencil ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “smoky matte charcoal.” It’s a dark gray with cool undertones and a matte finish. It was semi-opaque in one stroke, and it was buildable to rich, opaque color after two layers. On me, it wore well for eight and a half hours before lightly smudging. bareMinerals Mesmerized (LE, $14.00) is warmer. NARS Madison Ave. (P, $24.00) is very similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Urban Decay Lush 24/7 Velvet Glide-on Eye Pencil ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “rich smoky matte brown.” It’s a deepened, dark brown with a matte finish and subtle warm undertones. The consistency is drier (you can definitely feel what they mean by “more powdery”), so it had a tendency to skip/drag in coverage, though it didn’t really feel stiff or stubborn when I used it on my lower lash line. It wore well for nine hours before it started to smudge along the lower edge. Buxom Here’s My Number (P, $17.00) is less matte. Urban Decay Crave (P, $19.00) is less matte. Urban Decay Demolition (P, $19.00) is less matte. MAC Rich Experience (P, $20.00) is similar. Estee Lauder Blackened Cocoa (LE, $20.00) is darker. Bobbi Brown Mahogany (P, $24.00) is darker, less matte. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Urban Decay Minx 24/7 Velvet Glide-on Eye Pencil ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “rich, smoky matte navy.” It’s a cool-toned, deep, dark purpled-blue with a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage in one stroke, and it was buildable to mostly opaque color. Again, it had that drier, powdery-like consistency that made it harder to get really crisp, defined edges and even color coverage. The color wore well for nine hours before it had slight smudging. Urban Decay Sabbath (P, $19.00) is bluer, glossier. Giorgio Armani #3 (P, $29.00) is bluer. Estee Lauder Blackened Sapphire (LE, $20.00) is bluer. Estee Lauder Blackened Plum (LE, $20.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Urban Decay Plushie 24/7 Velvet Glide-on Eye Pencil ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “rich, smoky matte purple.” It’s a medium-dark, plum-tinged purple with a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color in one go, but it wasn’t very buildable as the consistency of this shade was drier than the rest, so it tended to skip and apply unevenly, which made layering the color difficult. Once on, the color did stay on well for eight and a half hours before starting to show signs of fading. Laura Mercier Violet (P, $24.00) is cooler-toned, less matte. MAC Snow Shadow (P, $20.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Pretty, but I get the vibe that if you aren’t meaning to smudge them out, you’re better off sticking with the main line.

The colors are pretty, though!

“all the long-wearing benefits of the original formula”??? I’ve never found the 24/7 liners to be especially long-wearing. In fact, I’ve found most of them to be disappointingly smudge-prone (not in a good way) and not long-lasting. The 24/7 pencils (the chubby ones) last better on me as liners. Drugstore pencils from GOSH last better and so do the Sephora pencils (for about half the price). I’ll be passing on these based on past experience. Minx looks like a gorgeous colour (especially for my brown eyes) so I might give it a try or look for a dupe, given the B- rating..

furandlace Avatar

Agreed, Mariella. UD 24/7 pencils are some of the most overhyped products out there. The colour range is the only decent thing about them in my experience.

Mariella Avatar

The colour range is stunning and that makes it even more disappointing that for some reason, they just don’t last all that well on me. When I got my first ones, I was so excited and then instantly dismayed when I saw how much they’d smeared and travelled. Maybe I should try a few more but since I’ve found others that work better (and some of which cost much less), I’m reluctant to give them another go.

Barbara Avatar

They look interesting though I’m too poor to afford anything UD hahaha. I own two of the original ones as a gift, a gold and a brown. The brown one always seems to smudge and reach the bottom of my eyes and I have no idea why…probably because my eye area is more oily? Really like cult though 🙂

Christine Avatar

You know, for many readers, these are excellent, but there is definitely a group of readers who find these to be short-wearing, prone to smudging/fading, etc. – basically, lots of people love ’em but there are some who don’t! You’re not alone!

Mariella Avatar

I think just about any product is like this. I hear people saying that their eye shadows smudge with UDPP and I’m like “WHAT? That stuff holds through ANYTHING”. Colour Tattoo cream shadows smudge and crease on some folks within a couple of hours, and on me, they’d probably last all week if I didn’t remove them. So many people love Nars Radiant Concealer and on me, it’s dry and dreadful….we’re just all so different in terms of how things wear on us (your recent experience with the Marc Jacobs cream shadow sticks is another example). You wouldn’t think this would be the case but it is and I always find it so surprising.

Christine Avatar

Right? It’s still surprising, even though every cult favorite product that seemingly “everyone” loves always has a distinct minority that it works horribly on. Haha! So funny, because UDPP (original) actually creases on me at the 6-8 hour mark, but the other versions have been fine. The newer one in the tube seems to be more consistent at 7-8 hours for me now. I would never use it back in the day – I would always opt for a MAC Paint Pot, Paint, or a pigment + mixing medium, because they all held up better for me.

Some products it comes down to preferences (we all weight certain things higher/lower – what might be a deal-breaker for me may be very minor to someone else), but things like “this is such a great, long-wearing pencil” for a number of folks and “this smudges after a couple of hours” is crazyyyy to me (since it isn’t so much a preferences thing).

Sylirael Avatar

Hm… I was super excited to see these, but was hoping they’d wear a little better! I still kind of want Minx, because i actually want a smudgy navy liner for something, and Cult is a neat colour, but it’s a shame about Plushie.

I like the grey, but I still really want that cool elephant grey one from NARS – the gel liner that I can’t remember the name of, LOL. Transvaal maybe? It was the grey one from that release anyway.

Christine,

Hi, i do loved the color for all UD 24/7 eye pencil , but i found out it seem not work on the weather here of Asian (Hong Kong), its melted so badly , it happened to me and my friend also, that was
couple year ago.

JJ Avatar

I really had to press down and apply pressure to get it to apply, more pressure then I like to use on the eye area. That and the work it took to get a more precise line.

Now what I did like was how matte it was.

Hey Christine: Just checking these out on-line at Sephora and I see this trio of travel sized pencils. They are not labelled on Sephora as Velvet liners, but their description sounds precisely the same. Think this could be a cost effective way of trying these without buying full size. Any ideas on whether these are the same as the velvet line?

I reaaaaally love the color of cult but I feel meh about the
Staying power of ud. Love a lot of the colors but they smudge
And smear on me. Pretty whack. Is there an eyeshadow that’s similar to cult in color? I’m waiting for a company to come out with a deliciously awesome velvet finish for es and el……

Marlene Avatar

You know, I LOOOOOVE urban decay’s liners. They last a whole day on me, no lie! I lost count of the amount of times I slept with makeup on (I know, but I was SOOO tired!) and the next day the liner was there, BAM! And my most favourite finish ever is super matte, so I’m excited for these. I’m just praying they aren’t as stiff as NARS’ liners, though – Barrow Street and Rue Bonaparte only ever work in my waterline, and even then it’s gone after 3 or 4 hours :/

Rachel Avatar

I like them.question, how do you get the ud pencils colors to. not transfer beyond the drawn line.I’ll put them.on but halfway through my day I’ll be looking like the eyeliner.melted a bit.I try not to rub my eyes.I wonder if this happens to other people too.

Helene Avatar

I don’t really like very matte eyeliners. I need a bit of sheen. I also dislike eyeliners that drag, not something my eyelids need.
Are these going to replace the old, ordinary ones? Them I do like 🙂

Demetra Avatar

Hi Christine, Love temptalia sooooo much, my daughter and I are big fans of urban decay eyeliners. I would like to know if urban decay makes good eye brow fillers?

Tanesha Avatar

disappointed that the deep purple doesn’t work out so well because I was planning on buying a few deep purple eye-shadows from Inglot and it would have been nice to use these this fall, but there are other pencils I guess

Quinctia Avatar

Hmm, I got Plushie for a deluxe sample a couple of weeks ago, and I felt it applied and wore well. Though, when I line with pencil, it’s generally a very thin line on the upper lid, so my application and usage might vary enough to make my results differ. But the application was easy, and it was less prone to migrating to the outer corner of my eye than some other eyeliners, including some of UD’s.

I have fairly bad luck with their creamier eyeliner pencils, if there is shimmer or some metallicness, or if they’re a bit more matte, like Perversion, they’re just as nice as other brands’, but stuff like Zero and Whiskey won’t stay put on me.
