Tom Ford Public Display Lip Contour Duo Review, Photos, Swatches
Public Display (01)
Tom Ford Public Display (01) Lip Contour Duo ($53.00 for 0.08 oz.) contains a slim lip color with a twist-up “Lip Shaper,” where the lip color hides in the base of the component. This duo features a soft, medium peachy brown Lip Color with a slightly lighter, gold-sparkled Lip Shaper.
The Lip Shaper is designed for enhancing and defining the lips, and it can be used to shape or “create an ombre effect” to the lips, while the lip color is supposed to be full coverage. Sadly, I really like the lip color formula in the duo; it’s very creamy, hydrating, and comfortable to wear with four to six-hour wear time, but the Lip Shaper formulation left a lot to be desired. I struggled with using the Lip Shapers as they often broke on me, as they were quite brittle, and the majority were very dry, so they tugged and dragged on the lips. They also had bits of sparkle, which did not work well for defining the edge of the lips nor did it work out for filling in the lips.

Public Display (Lip Color)
Public Display (Lip Color) is a medium, peachy-brown with warm undertones and a creamy, natural finish. It had mostly opaque coverage with a creamy, smooth consistency that was easy to apply and very comfortable to wear, as it was hydrating while worn. The color wore well for four and a half hours on me.

Public Display (Lip Shaper)
Public Display (Lip Shaper) is a light-medium peach with warm undertones and a hint of pink paired with gold sparkle. The gold sparkle was an unexpected find in the Lip Shaper–it actually made it harder to get crisp, defined edges as the sparkles sometimes flaked away or pushed the color outside the lip line. The texture was very dry, which made the pencil stiff and difficult to use. It is not the type of formula that is conducive to filling in the lips (often a technique used for better hold and evening out the natural lip color), and it is barely serviceable for lining the edge of the lips. I found it to be very uneven as the texture bunched up on itself in places and looked somewhat streaky, even just used along the edge of the lips. It lasted for hours, though it was drying on its own.

Wow, for the price you would expect amazing things from Tom Ford’s lip liner! It’s such a shame that it failed so much!!
It is pricey!
That’s a bit strange to me that the lip liner has sparkle in it. The lip color is nice though, hopefully Tom Ford plans to sell them separately soon.
I feel like it’s so rare to see real sparkle in lip liner… occasionally pearl or a little sheen that is more satin than full-on glitter.
What a disappointment!
Beyond disappointing!
Oh, Tom Ford, WHY???
Too little product (.08) for $53, a brittle, unusable lip pencil and a lip color that is way too easily duped to be worth it. Hello to MAC Among The Fireflies!
I actually think the likely split is 0.07 oz. for the lipstick and 0.01 oz. for the lip liner (most twist-ups are 0.01 oz. or less), and somehow the slim lipsticks are between 0.07 and 0.09 oz. from what I’ve seen (so that’s my guess!). If I was Tom Ford, I’d have released the lipstick and ditched the liner entirely!
I decided to skip this entire lipstick range after less than stellar reviews/experiences. Just bought Sea Dragon lip foil and could not be more pleased + new Lips and Boys around the corner.
Happy to hear the Lip Foil is working for you, Tracey! I haven’t tried those.
I’m not surprised. I swatched one of these in store, and couldn’t get ANY pigment out of the lip pencil, it was SO dry and hard 🙁 And for $ 53, there’s not a lot of product in there either. It’s such a shame, since the lipstick color itself is so beautiful looking ( love that finish!), but the lip pencil looks like pure torture. You could get a $1 lip liner from DS that performs better. IDK, I feel like Tom Ford has been slipping in quality lately, with You Tubers complaining that batches of Night Bloom powder that had no pigment, me swatching a Black Bloom powder that was totally off in color, then a reader here complained about a $250 candle that had no scent when burned. Don’t get me wrong, I have a number of TF lippies and cream shadows that I love, but at this price point, these quality issues aren’t acceptable
The liner being tricky is surprising. It is not even just a drier or stiffer liner; like I don’t really expect that a liner is going to feel like a creamy lipstick, you know? But these were next-level in terms of dryness/stiffness… they felt more like a dried-out liner than a new one.
The sparkle was unexpected (I don’t recall reading anything about sparkle in the copy), too, and I don’t think most were expecting it!
I’m not sure if I told you but I LOVE your new logo! : )
Thank you, Deborah! 🙂
Shame about the lip pencil.
Agreed!
This was a waste of money, and being a Fordette, I rarely say anything bad about Tom. It’s long, and a bit cumbersome and the pencil is awful even though the lipstick is lovely. A rare dud from him.
The texture of the pencil doesn’t make sense to me at all – I know some like a firmer pencil, but some of the ones in the duos were almost unusable.
It’s too bad you couldn’t buy the lipstick separately because that colour is gorgeous. I swatched these in the store and was baffled by the chunky glitter – it doesn’t even really bind to the rest of the liner.
It is! The lipstick is a much stronger product.
It’s a shame about these because they are a good concept and the shades are really nice. Public Display is the one I liked best, but when I tried it on, the liner was so dry and brittle that I just couldn’t justify it. One of the rare not-so-good Tom Ford products 🙁
I’m wondering wtf was going on over at TF to get these released with so many issues with the liners. It doesn’t make sense. Was he bought out?
You and me both!
