Shiseido Volcanic, Firecracker, Lantern Red VisionAiry Lipsticks Reviews & Swatches
Volcanic (218)
Shiseido Volcanic (218) VisionAiry Gel Lipstick ($26.00 for 0.05 oz.) is a rich, medium-dark orange-red with moderate, warm undertones and a cream finish. The color coverage applied evenly in one layer and delivered nearly opaque pigmentation. The texture felt lightweight and creamy as it skated along my lips comfortably, though some of that slip disappeared as the product “set” a bit so it didn’t slide around during wear but still had a subtle sheen. It wore well for six hours and felt lightly moisturizing over time.

Formula Overview
$26.00/0.05 oz. - $520.00 Per Ounce
The formula is supposed to have "high levels of pigment" for "cushiony, comfortable, weightless color" that lasts for "six hours." They had rich color coverage in a single stroke, just as promised, and they were creamy and emollient, which made them comfortable and easy to apply on my lips.
The formula has a slight set to it where it is less emollient and clings slightly (but not uncomfortably), so it loses some of the initial slip, which ultimately helps keep the product in place better and for longer. Over time (about an hour or so), the shine wore down a bit and the consistency felt a little tackier, but most of the shades lasted for six to eight hours and some of the mid-tone and deeper shades made it through a meal adequately.
The formula remained comfortable to wear, kept my lips hydrated while worn but they often felt quite good even a few hours later after a shade wore down. There was no discernible scent or taste.
The biggest downside to the product is that each tube contains a mere 0.05 oz., which is absolutely tiny relative to most traditional lipsticks (contrast this with the also-just released ModernMatte lipstick, which is the same price but contains 0.14 oz.).

Firecracker (219)
Shiseido Firecracker (219) VisionAiry Gel Lipstick ($26.00 for 0.05 oz.) is a bright, medium red with strong, warm orange undertones and a satin finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation in a single layer–a hint of my lip freckle peered through–with a smooth, even application of color that didn’t emphasize my lip lines.
The consistency was creamy with a velvety glide that almost felt like it was melting against my lips, but it had a “soft set” where it developed light tackiness and didn’t slide around after a minute or so. The shine wore down within an hour, while the color stayed on for over six hours on me and felt lightly hydrating over time.

Lantern Red (220)
Shiseido Lantern Red (220) VisionAiry Gel Lipstick ($26.00 for 0.05 oz.) is a medium-dark copper with warm, red undertones and a satin finish. The pigmentation was nearly opaque in a single stroke, which applied evenly across my lips and didn’t tug during application.
The texture was lightweight, creamy with moderate slip, but it developed a bit of tackiness and felt “clingy” in a way (but not uncomfortably clingy) for better, longer adhesion. There was a smidgen of product that sank into my deeper lip lines but wasn’t apparent in person. It lasted nicely for over six hours and felt lightly moisturizing.

These warmer reds look so pretty! How is this formula compared to Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids (I really like On Fire Red, the original formula), Christine?
This trio of red based shades are all lovely and glam looking!
The two I love the most, Volcanic and Firecracker, I do have dupes for in MAC Lady Danger and YSL Scout’s Red. So that quelled my desire for them. Speaking of which, I really need to start using my MAC Lady Danger and YSL Scouts Red….but I have nowhere to wear them!
I knew I would like/love Volcanic and Lantern Red and I do. Very similar to CP’s Foolish Lux lipstick as well. Gorgeous all year round shades.
I need no red lipsticks. I need no red lipsticks. I need no….SIT ON YOUR HANDS. There are some delightful reds out this spring (and I’m going to try to acquire NONE of them. But these Shiseidos are creeping into my unconscious. Wore Bloodstone to day job, where no one wears make up, and there are 3-4 of us left, all in separate rooms. Oh well, I enjoyed it…. S’s reformulation of lipstick was as unnecessary as UD’s. Or Bite’s, though going vegan is arguably a good step/reason. I realize that it’s marketing, to drive sales, but often these reformulations are not for the better, either from a personal opinion or objectively.
These Visionairy lipsticks are one of my favorite formulas. So happy to see them reviewed here.
The formula looks pretty but none of these tones would work for me. Money saved 🙂
Yay more Shiseido!
While it takes me forever to finish a red lipstick because I don’t wear them often, I do like Shiseido formulas for hydration! Their formulas don’t leave my lips crackly/dry the next day in comparison to other “hydrating” lipsticks. I somehow can’t ignore that red-line packaging, it reminds me of car interiors.
