The formula is supposed to have a "satin finish" with "ultra-thin pigments" that yield "full coverage" while also having a moisturizing base. Most shades in the range have a satin to luminous finish--not glossy but they have a luminosity to them that gives the appearance of lighter-weight color and smoother, fuller lips that a true satin finish doesn't have (in my experience).

The texture has a more velvety feel--smooth with great glide but not a lot of wetness, so they go on comfortably but feel very lightweight and thin but don't emphasize lip lines/lip texture. The coverage tends to be more semi-opaque to opaque, so they aren't always living up to the "full coverage" claim.

Most shades wear four hours or longer with some of the deeper and richer hues lasting six hours or more, and the formula has been hydrating for me. They have a subtle, floral scent but no discernible taste.

Claims / Ingredients

An intense, longwearing lip colour with full coverage and a satin finish. The formula instantly comforts lips, leaving them luminous and supple. In a palette of vibrant shades for a bold, daring look.

Apparently, I wrote a quick review of this awhile back and it wasn't very good. Since then, Chanel Pirate has become one of my very favorite reds. I outline my lips first with a MAC lip liner (Cherry, I think) and I don't have a problem with feathering. Pirate stays on pretty well, and when it starts to wear off, it's not in an obvious way. I sometimes need to touch it up after eating, but I don't mind doing touch-ups. My new conclusion is that Chanel Pirate is gorgeous and luxurious, and has become my top go-to red for evenings.

Great everyday shade. My lips are quite pigmented, but it looks good, even without a lip liner. For me it isn't drying at all. It also isn't moisturizing.

Love this one. It is the greatest lipstick I have ever had. It dries my lips a bit after several hours, however it is not critical as a lip balm improves the situation properly. The lipctick is applied evenly and does not need a lip brush or a pencil to apply the product and shape the lips. It adds volume a bit. Feels rather good. Will last through coffee break or lucnh. The only thing that disappoints me in this product is the way it vanishes from the lips after four hours of wearing. The layer may seem uneven and to apply a new one I need to clean the previous layer to get an even coverage again.

I treated myself to Pirate the other day because I'd seen it used and thought it looked beautiful and I needed a true blue based red lipstick that was wearable and not to "extreme" looking. I'd read good reviews for this shade and was so excited to "treat myself", especially since everything else I tried to purchase that day was sold out! I have to say that I'm really disappointed in this lipstick and I'm not sure if it's just this particular shade or the formulation of the whole line (since this is my only Rouge Allure) but while this is a very attractive colour, it simply does not last on my lips. At this price point, I believe wear should be long than an hour or so. MAC lipsticks that cost 1/3 the price of this last better on me. I'm still willing to try a few more of these lipsticks (or perhaps some of Chanel's other formulas) - heck, it's Chanel! But overall, I was expecting better!
