Pat McGrath Sublime Mothership Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Sublime
Pat McGrath Sublime Mothership Eyeshadow Palette ($125.00 for 0.47 oz.) is a new, permanent palette that features 10 eyeshadows in a variety of finishes in a warmer-toned set of shades and seemed to be less glittery compared to the other two palettes. The brand has divided their eyeshadows into two finishes: Powderluxe Pressed Eye Shadows (matte, pearl, and sparkle finishes) and “modern, hybrid pigmented formulas” (I’m not sure why one type got an official name and the other did not!) with the latter having “metallic, satin sheen, iridescence, and holographic brilliance finishes.”
The key to determining which is which is to look at the shape of the eyeshadow–the “hybrid” shades are domed, and they tend to have a lot more sparkle in them, too. These shades are often recommended to be applied with a “dampened brush to achieve an eye-opening effect” or with “fingertip[s],” though some of the Powderluxe shades can be used wet or dry, too (per the brand). Pat McGrath actually breaks down how to apply each shade here. It’s all I ever wanted from a brand: to actually be more specific on a shade-by-shade level if, in fact, they intend for shades to differ in pigmentation or application!
There’s something about the way the palettes in the Mothership line are designed that makes me think they’re artistic, conceptual palettes that will be most versatile when paired with other eyeshadows and palettes one might have in one’s stash. There were definitely looks to be done within the palette, but I often wanted to reach for outside shades to bring looks to their fullest potential. It will also perform the best if you already use dampened brushes with high-sparkle/high-shimmer eyeshadows.
The packaging is hefty; there’s no question that some of the high price tag is due to the heavier packaging and the metal-esque plate on the exterior and the faceted mirror inside. I do, however, wish the brand had labeled the eyeshadows somewhere on the palette along with the palette’s name.

Skinshow Glow
Skinshow Glow is a light pink with warm, yellow undertones and a frosted sheen. The pigmentation was opaque with a smooth, almost cream-like texture that was blendable and easy to apply. It started to fade on me after eight and a half hours.

Formula Overview
$25.00/0.04 oz. - $625.00 Per Ounce
Pat McGrath's eyeshadows are, generally, supposed to be "super-saturated" with "creamy, soft textures" and "extreme blendability and adherence without creasing." A lot of how well they perform (and to some degree, how they are supposed to be applied and marketed) depends on the type of shades, but by and large, the eyeshadows perform very much as they are described.
The brand released single eyeshadows in March 2019, and the shades have been consistent in quality, look, and feel. They are not removable, unfortunately, so one would have to depot like any other single eyeshadow--I tried using tweezers and lifting on several shades to no avail. The lids are held closed by a weak magnet, so I'm not sure they're as secure as most single eyeshadow compacts in my stash--I wish it really locked in, but there's definitely a magnet that pulls the lid down if it's within 2mm of the base.
The mattes are velvety, blendable, and dense without being thick or too heavy, and they have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation where a little can go a long way with some of the deeper and richer hues. The satin and pearl finishes are smooth, lightly creamy, and firmer but not dense or thick with good pigmentation, blendability, and easy application. The more metallic finishes tend to be softer, creamy, and smooth with a bit more denseness and no powderiness. The sparkly/glittery shades are often designed to be applied wet for richer coverage or intensity, which has largely been my experience. Most of the shades last between eight and nine hours.

Iconic
Iconic is a medium, golden brown with warm undertones and a metallic finish. It had opaque color coverage in a single layer, which applied evenly and smoothly to bare skin. The texture felt creamy, dense but not too thick or stiff to work with, and blended out easily on the skin. It wore well for eight and a half hours before fading noticeably.

Bronze 005
Bronze 005 is a rich, medium-dark copper with warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It was richly pigmented both dry and wet, though the dampened application yielded a more metallic shine. The brand stated that it could be applied dry or wet. The consistency was more loosely pressed and felt a bit chunkier compared to other shades, which wasn’t a surprise given the larger sparkle/micro-glitter in the eyeshadow. It applied fairly well dry but did go on more evenly when applied with a dampened brush. On me, it lasted for eight hours with moderate fallout applied dry and eight and a half hours with slight fallout applied with a dampened brush.

VR Nectar
VR Nectar has a rosy, brown base with peach-to-pink shifting sparkle paired with a metallic sheen. It had semi-sheer coverage when applied dry, and then more opaque coverage when applied with a dampened brush. The brand said to “press” this shade to “reach the desired effect,” though it also described it as a “vivid colour” (which is confusing). The consistency was soft, a little dry and loose, but it managed to apply fairly evenly when used dry but would recommend fingertip or dampened brush application for smoother results. The color started to fade on me after eight and a half hours of wear, though there was moderate fallout when used dry and slight fallout when applied with a dampened brush.

Blitz Emerald
Blitz Emerald is a rich, medium-dark emerald green with a warm, blackened-brown base and a metallic finish. The brand recommends “press[ing] the pigment into the lid with the fingertip to build intensity” (read: buildable), which I found true of fingertip application–medium coverage that built up to mostly opaque coverage. With a dry brush, it had medium coverage and didn’t seem quite as buildable, and with a dampened brush, it was opaque in a single layer and applied very smoothly. I prefer precision, so a dampened brush was my preferred method of application. The texture was soft, lightly dusty, and felt a touch drier (almost like a baked product–dry but not dry in a way that impacted the application or wear). It lasted for eight and a half hours on me.

Astral Ghost Orchid
Astral Ghost Orchid is a silvery white base with pink-to-violet shifting sparkle. Per the brand, it is recommended to apply it “with the fingertip for colour-morphing, sultry shine” until the “desired effect” (read: buildable) is achieved. It’s a sheer, sparkling shade, and the duochrome shift made it “colour-morphing” when layered over something else. When I tried applying it with a dampened brush, it had semi-opaqu coverage (which was more coverage than I got out of the same shade in the Subversive palette), but it had medium, buildable coverage applied with a fingertip–I preferred applying with a brush first and then patting a bit more on top with my fingertip for higher coverage and greater sparkle. It wore well for eight hours on me but had some fallout over time if I did not use it with a dampened brush or over an adhesive base.

Christine you are such a blessing. I was on the fence about whether I just wanted this one as well b/c of the fact that it has a repeat shade (outside of the thrice repeated black), but this really pushed me into getting it. And you got the review out before they sold out for the Rouge sale! You are ah-mah-zing!
I’ve been hoping that you were going to review these! The colors of all 3 palettes look amazing.
If I was going to splurge on one of these palettes, this is the one I would get! These are my colors, especially that emerald… *swoon*
Blitz emerald is ruining my life. I’ve been waiting for a dupe for Junebug ever since Sugarpill discontinued it.
I bought all three palettes on Pat McGrath’s web site, got the $75 discount, but there’s no return. With the 20% Rouge Sale at Sephora, it comes out to be the same price, but I have the option to return. I wish I had waited and bought it at Sephora. Not that I am going to return the palettes, they are beautiful, but I would like to have that option in case I change my mind. Also, there is one or two eyeshadows that is repeated in all the palettes (the black is repeated in all 3 palettes, and another one in two). For $300, I expected all the eyeshadows to be unique and different.
If you don’t live in New York, you at least saved the tax. 🙂
I live in California, but I was charged tax for the 3 palettes. I guess they have some kind of business in this state. Good that you brought it up, I’m going to email customer service and see what they say.
I have this palette and LOVE it. I ordered Mothership III today and I’m feeling very on the fence – with the 2! duplicate shades it feels like a lot more money. *sigh*
Christine!!! You are working like a machine! These are honestly so beautiful. I didn’t realize that Pat McGrath had detailed application instructions on her site, but now it makes me want to try it out all the more. She makes it like a curated makeup/art experience.
Ditto on the detailed instruction for application! Thanks Christine! I still don’t have one, but I still like to see her techniques.
How dearly I wish she sold singles, because Blitz Emerald is beckoning me. I’m not spending that much money on a palette for one shade, though.
Same here.
I am soooo drawn to this palette, but I think it’s mostly that green. Good thing it’s permanent…this might find it’s way to my house come spring. (currently palette full xD)
NEXT November’s VIB or *possibly* Rouge sale. Not this year, however. I did my one major HE treat already today, so now I’ll just sit on this one. This one is an absolute winning palette, I believe!
And that eye look you did using the emerald green on the lower lashline sets this one apart from the slew of plum & gold looks so in vogue presently!
What HE did you pick?
Natasha Denona Lila Palette!
Hahahahaha I did just the opposite! I picked 2 Pat’s palettes first and Lila is postponed next April. I gave the priority on Pat because it’s more glittery so perfect for parties and New Year’s Eve ? I would like to know your opinion about the Lila once you use it a bit. I will ask you in a comment in a few months (I always enjoy reading your comments)
I think I’ll do the same. I’m sooo disappointed with my last two purchases and the reviews on Pat’s palettes. I’ve not been disappointed with Natasha’s yet. And even the smaller holiday versions of her palettes are getting great reviews from a number of Vloggers I trust.
This one is simply gorgeous and has me rethinking what I’m picking up in the Sephora sale.
These are some really pretty (and different!) shades! I love the variety that you have with this palette, and they’re all really pretty!
As beautiful as these eyeshadows are, it’s a NO for me. This price point is outrageous and not at all in my budget. $125.00 for a ten pan shadow palette is ridiculous. The only way this is happening in my world is if I hit the lottery. Lol, and I think I have a better chance of getting struck by lightening! Thank goodness for dupes!!!
After several mixups from Sephora I’m hoping this time they send me the Sublime Pat McGraft palette. I’m supposed to get this on Wednesday, fingers crossed because it looks great!
And the one I like the least received the best rating. This is so I’ll not buy any of them. I realize it now. LOL
I liked this one more than I thought! That’s an amazing black shadow she’s created!
I am offically tempted. I love that green!
I just ordered this ! I already feel guilty lol the Natasha Sunset palette is the only palette I’ve paid over $150 cdn for and I told myself never again buuuuut Now I’ve bought this. Haha I hope it’s everything I’m expecting and more & the price isn’t just a gimmick “buying the name” ! the sunset palette was worth every penny so fingers crossed this one is too. Love the review temptalia! thank you
I got this palette as a Christmas present and it’s so damn gorgeous it makes me want to cry, lol.
