Pat McGrath Sublime Bronze Temptation MTHRSHP Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches

Pat McGrath Sublime Bronze Temptation MTHRSHP Eyeshadow Palette

Sublime Bronze Temptation

Pat McGrath Sublime Bronze Temptation MTHRSHP Eyeshadow Palette ($55.00 for 0.42 oz.) is a new, limited edition six-pan palette that features a mix of neutrals with a pop of emerald green. Of the holiday palettes released, this was one of the more cohesive ones as it had a mix of mattes and shimmers, lights and darks, so I could see it working well for a myriad of looks and preferences.

Pat McGrath Celestial EYEdols Eyeshadow

Celestial

Celestial is a light-medium, golden beige with warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. The consistency was lightly creamy, soft, and blendable, though it was more loosely-pressed in the pan compared to the other shimmer/metallic shades in the mini palettes. It was easy to apply to bare skin, as it had opaque color coverage that adhered well and lasted for almost 10 hours on me.

Formula Overview

$25.00/0.04 oz. - $625.00 Per Ounce

Pat McGrath's eyeshadows are, generally, supposed to be "super-saturated" with "creamy, soft textures" and "extreme blendability and adherence without creasing." A lot of how well they perform (and to some degree, how they are supposed to be applied and marketed) depends on the type of shades, but by and large, the eyeshadows perform very much as they are described.

The brand released single eyeshadows in March 2019, and the shades have been consistent in quality, look, and feel. They are not removable, unfortunately, so one would have to depot like any other single eyeshadow--I tried using tweezers and lifting on several shades to no avail. The lids are held closed by a weak magnet, so I'm not sure they're as secure as most single eyeshadow compacts in my stash--I wish it really locked in, but there's definitely a magnet that pulls the lid down if it's within 2mm of the base.

The mattes are velvety, blendable, and dense without being thick or too heavy, and they have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation where a little can go a long way with some of the deeper and richer hues. The satin and pearl finishes are smooth, lightly creamy, and firmer but not dense or thick with good pigmentation, blendability, and easy application. The more metallic finishes tend to be softer, creamy, and smooth with a bit more denseness and no powderiness. The sparkly/glittery shades are often designed to be applied wet for richer coverage or intensity, which has largely been my experience. Most of the shades last between eight and nine hours.

Pat McGrath Burning Desire EYEdols Eyeshadow

Burning Desire

Burning Desire is a medium brown with warm, yellowish undertones and a matte finish. It had rich color payoff paired with a smooth, velvety texture that was finely-milled, blendable, and soft enough to be easy to pick up and to use but didn’t have fallout or dustiness in the pan. The eyeshadow stayed on well for nine and a half hours on me before fading slightly.

Pat McGrath Supernova EYEdols Eyeshadow

Supernova

Supernova is a rich, emerald green with subtle, warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic sheen. It had opaque color coverage that applied evenly and smoothly onto my lid in a single layer. The texture was soft, lightly creamy, and a bit more firmly-pressed in the pan compared to the other shimmery shades in the palette, though it wasn’t stiff or difficult to pick up with a brush. The eyeshadow lasted well for nine and a half hours on me before it started to crease noticeably.

Pat McGrath Dark Paradise EYEdols Eyeshadow

Dark Paradise

Dark Paradise is a muted, medium-dark brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was nearly opaque in a single layer, while the texture was soft, velvety, and blendable without being powdery or too firmly pressed in the pan. It lasted well on my lids for nine hours before fading a touch.

Pat McGrath Corruption EYEdols Eyeshadow

Corruption

Corruption is a deep plum with warm, copper-brown undertones that shifted from pinky-plum to red-copper. It had a really interesting shift when swatched on my arm, but it wasn’t quite as noticeable on my lid–it tended to look like a reddish-plum most of the time. The texture was smooth, lightly creamy, and felt firmer in the pan with a slightly thicker consistency compared to other shades. I didn’t have any trouble picking it up with a brush or blending out the edges on my lid, but it wasn’t quite as effortless as other shades in the palette (that’s what happens when you set the bar so high!). It stayed on nicely for almost 10 hours on me before creasing faintly.

I’ve been obsessed with Pat McGrath since my very 1st palette which was mothership II sublime!! I now own all even the decadence except for the large mothership subliminal I. I love Pat so much as an artist and also because of her quality!!! Her formulas are consistent always and in my years of loving makeup I have to say her shadows are by far the best on the market in my opinion!!

Eva Avatar

Iā€™d never splurged on an impulse buy based solely on a review until today. Iā€™ve always wanted to try Pat McGrathā€™s eyeshadow but the larger palettes are (in my opinion) prohibitively expensive. Your swatches and assessment of this palette had me in love at first sight and I immediately hit that Sephora link. I canā€™t wait to try it out! Something about that olive shift is so dazzling to meā€”plus, as a whole this palette seems really versatile. So..thanks! (I think. My wallet says otherwise. But seriously, Iā€™ve been reading your reviews for years and am so thankful you do the work that you do. Youā€™re the best!)

Christine, I’m curious, have you used synthetic or natural brushes when blending the metallic colors (eg. Supernova, Provocatrix)? I’ve used my fingertips when I applied these two but I watched yesterday a video on YT where the blogger was saying that she had a bit of difficulty when blending the metallic shades with synthetic brushes as the color seemed not to adhere to the brush. She had a better experience when she blended with a natural brush. And in general, would you recommend the natural brushes for blending PMG metallic shades? Thank you so much!

Christine Avatar

I use mostly natural hair brushes in general, though I find synthetics are better for firmer/denser formulations (in general, like very firmly-pressed or silicone-heavy eyeshadows). I know I have used some synthetic brushes with some of the Pat McGrath eyeshadows, but I couldn’t tell you which specifically (most likely the more sparkly shades and ones that are advised to use wet or with fingertips). I haven’t found any brush to perform poorly with these eyeshadows, though!

dzymzlzy Avatar

This was my first PMG splurge. It arrived last Thursday and I was so impressed that I ordered the other two palettes in the Rouge sale. I also finally convinced myself to order Bronze Seduction but it was sold out moments after the sale started at midnight.

I was just answering a few questions about these palettes for Tammy and I forgot to mention that for me, none of the palettes is a stand alone palette. Your review reminded me of that. I have to say, I agree that PML has a wonderful formula and that the quality control is exceptional, up to this point. Who knows about the future. As I told Tammy, if I could cherry pick the shades going into the palettes then this would be a win/win for me but there are shades I will never use housed within each of the different palettes forcing me to purchase all three rather than just one that was curated well for me personally. Several shades between these palettes and larger palettes are similar (though not the same) and several of the shades are not super unique. Based solely on the quality you can’t go wrong. With the price point so high for the larger palettes I feel like these smaller palettes are doable for many. If I had swatched the palettes before purchasing them I don’t know if I would have purchased them. Now that I have them I am going to keep them and I will use them but personally, I think in the future, Pat McGrath needs to look at developing some more unique shades and personally, I think single shadows or a buildable palette system would be nice.

I am happy for her and I think she is an exceptional makeup artist. I feel like I am trying to balance the negatives and the positives to not step on anyone’s toes with my comments here but when looking at her mini-tutorial’s on IG the video itself has been filtered and enhanced thus making the sparkling shadows appear other-worldly shiny and I would prefer to see really accurate colour and shimmer without the enhancements. People are still going to buy them because they are stellar and they are very metallic/shimmery opaque shadows so I don’t think you need to enhance them or if you do, I think you should clearly label the video as an artistic interpretation rather than an actual representation. (I actually feel this way about most IG photos with a few exceptions) I know, most of us know that IG photos are enhanced but not everyone does and some people still think that although the video is enhanced, the shadows are going to go on like liquid metal. Just my little rant so I am done now, LOL.

Sarah Avatar

Yeah, I’ve also noticed that the ads for Pat McGrath products are some of the mostly highly edited I’ve ever seen. Like you said, pretty much every brand does it, but the products just look straight-up fake in some of these ads…

Kitty Avatar

This is a nice looking collection of shadows but it appears to me that at least three shades are what I’d consider more yellow-based. I find that yellow-based shadows aren’t a good look for me–they seem to make me look a little sick. I can handle maybe one in my look and even then, it’s stretching it, so three in one palette is overkill for me. I need a bit more of another undertone such as more of a light brown or other darker and/or cooler color to outweigh the yellow. Supernova and Corruption look lovely and workable for me though, but not enough for me to buy this palette.

I wish Pat McGrath would sell her shadows in singles and an empty palette so I could assemble a palette in colors that work for me
