Skin Deep

NARS Skin Deep 12-Pan Eyeshadow Palette ($59.00 for 0.80 oz.) is a new, limited edition neutral-themed palette with six mattes and six shimmers. The shades coordinated well with each other, and while the shimmers were shinier, they weren’t too thick or dense and had finer shimmer, so they layered well with the mattes in the palette. I think those who tend to build up their mattes or tend to use eyeshadow primer will get the most enjoyment out of the formula and performance of the palette.

Taunt

Taunt is a light-medium yellow with warm, orange undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was nearly opaque in a single layer, while the consistency was slightly powdery, so it did sheer out a bit once applied to my skin. The eyeshadow was blendable and went on evenly with seven and a half-hour wear.

Formula Overview

$19.00/0.04 oz. - $475.00 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to have "rich, high-impact color" that is "lightweight" and has "increased blendability." Like most larger ranges, there are winners and losers, and some of how they perform can be related to the type of finish. The mattes are soft, slightly dusty in the pans (or not at all) with medium to opaque, often buildable, color coverage. The satin and metallics tend to be smoother, more blendable, and more pigmented with less effort; NARS does the these lower shimmer finishes particularly well, which just looks "melted" on the skin as they lay down so smoothly and have a great shine.

Most shades applied better on my lid than swatched on my arm, which has been something seen across NARS' eyeshadows for years and didn't change with the recent update to their powder eyeshadow formula. On average, they lasted between seven and nine hours on me without primer. They did apply well over primer and stayed on well for 14 hours with minimal fading.

Worth noting: the updated formula and packaging resulted in a product decrease from 0.07 oz. per pan to 0.04 oz. The single eyeshadows received a more noticeable price drop (from $24 to $19) but the duo eyeshadows could be priced better (from $36 to $35).

Sophia

Sophia is a medium, rosy brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque color coverage in a single layer, which was easily built up to full coverage with a touch more on top. The consistency was soft, smooth, and a little powdery in the pan but did not sheer out too readily nor did it have fallout when I applied it to bare skin. It stayed on nicely for eight hours on me before starting to fade.

It had opaque pigmentation with a slightly powdery texture, which resulted in noticeable fallout during application, though the product blended out quite well along the edges. It lasted for just over eight hours on me before I noticed some fading.

Undressed

Undressed is a soft brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good color coverage that was buildable to full coverage with two layers. The eyeshadow had a soft, lightly powdery consistency that blended out easily but didn’t seem prone to fallout. It wore beautifully for seven and a half hours, which was when I started to notice fading.

Icon is a peachy gold with warm undertones and a frosted finish. The pigmentation was nearly opaque and could be built up to full coverage with less than half of a layer on top. Coconut Grove is a blackened brown with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish.

Unbuttoned

Unbuttoned is a deeper, reddish-brown with subtle, warm undertones and a satin sheen. It had opaque color payoff that applied evenly to bare skin and blended out with ease along the edges. The consistency was soft enough to be lightly powdery and had a bit of fallout when I blended out the shade initially. It lasted well for eight hours before there were signs of fading.

It may have only earned a B+, but something about the shades makes it the neutral, “naked” palette of my dreams! Perfect shades for both my eye color and skin tone. Problem is, I already have a ton of other such palettes: ABH Mod Ren, UD Naked 1 and 2, Lorac Unzipped and Pro 1. Not even remotely sure which one gets close to Skin Deep in its color schematic, however.

This is my ultimate anti-palette and would look horrid. But it is quite well-conceived for a contoured eye palette for the whole spectrum of skintones. FN did this in grays, I might be all over it. But in reality, that gray palette would be lucky to get a C. The fact that both CP, SG, and some indies you have not yet reviewed (Lunatick!) would do a cool version of this far better than a major player like Nars is pretty remarkable.

I think this is Nars’s take on the more modern warm toned theme. The quality of the shades was much better than what we have seen in the past (there has usually been one or two really dud shades) and the palette was quite cohesive. I liked the variety of finishes. The inclusion of red/brown shades does not work for me.
A gorgeous eye look Christine.

If I were newer to makeup and eyeshadow, I think I would probably grab this palette because, like ShariP, I love and am drawn to neutral shadows and neutral palettes especially. And while Faster Pussycat is a warmer shade than my favourite neutrals, all the other colours are so wearable and practical.

I swatched this at Ulta and it really is gorgeous!
I skipped the Wanted, Loaded and returned the Ignite palettes…but I think I might be getting this one!
Centerfold is absolutely stunning in person.
