Melt Cosmetics Four Twenty Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches

Four Twenty
Melt Cosmetics Four Twenty 10-Pan Eyeshadow Palette ($58.00 for 0.66 oz.) is a new, 10-pan palette that features nine matte shades and one shimmer shade. The majority of the eyeshadows had semi-opaque to opaque coverage, but they were on the more powdery side, which resulted in light to moderate fallout. The two deepest matte shades took more effort to blend out, though they seemed workable to me.

Shot Gun
Shot Gun is a bright, very yellow-leaning chartreuse paired with a matte finish and strong, warm undertones. Alternatively, one might describe it as a darker, “cooler” yellow. The texture was moderately powdery with some kick up in the pan and light fallout during application.
It had nearly opaque color coverage but sheered out a bit in practice, so a primer was necessary with this product. The color showed signs of fading after eight hours of wear.

Faded
Faded is a brighter, yellower chartreuse green with strong, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation in a single layer, but the moderately powdery texture resulted in the product sheering out in practice, so it had to be used over a primer and built up.
There was also some fallout due to the texture, so you’ll want to be careful to tap off excess prior to applying it to the eye area. It stayed on well for seven and a half hours before fading a bit.

Chronic
Chronic is a muted, medium-dark green with moderate, warm olive undertones and a matte finish. The texture was somewhat stiff and firmer, which made it harder to pick up evenly as well as made blending more challenging. It wasn’t powdery, though, so there wasn’t any concern for fallout. It had good color coverage that was buildable to full coverage with a second layer. This shade wore nicely for eight hours before fading noticeably.

Roll It
Roll It is a deep, olive-brown with moderate, warm undertones and a matte finish. The color coverage was opaque in one layer, though the texture was slightly drier and harder to diffuse and blend out along the edges.
It was slightly improved over an eyeshadow primer but will take extra effort to blend due to the intensity and depth paired with the texture. This shade showed signs of fading after eight hours of wear.

Shatter
Shatter is a bright, medium yellow with moderate, warm undertones and a frosted finish. The consistency was drier and slightly gritty to the touch, which resulted in some fallout during application. Wax
Wax is a bright, medium yellow with strong, warm undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow yielded opaque color coverage in a single layer, but the texture was lightly powdery, so it did appear a little dry when applied to my skin. I also noticed that it darkened slightly–appeared more orange in practice–which may or may not be a deal-breaker. It did this to a lesser degree over primer. This shade lasted well for eight hours before fading visibly and left a subtle stain behind.

Hash
Hash is a soft, taupe-brown with warmer undertones anda matte finish. The texture was fairly powdery, so there was a lot of product kicked up in the pan but also some fallout during application and a tendency to sheer out. I’d recommend applying this with a primer, which helped noticeably.
It had good color payoff but had to be built up in practice due to the texture, though it blended out seamlessly. This shade lasted well for seven and a half hours before fading visibly.

I ended up ordering this. So many of my friends are raving about it and have been doing gorgeous looks with it. It seems to be big hit with alternative makeup lovers. We’ll see. Those greenish yellows and grungy greens were too pretty to resist in the end.
Hi! Keep us updated!
Hi, Amalia! I sure will!
Hey Rachel, I totally understand! It’s getting hard to resist! And for me greens and yellows are my favorite!
Too many sick-looking colours (forget the drug names – they should go for alternate names for baby poo, as someone said about the Wallflower eyeliner yesterday!). I think there are 3 shades here that I might use but I’ve dupes of them all.
I’m glad I read your descriptions because on my phone screen every shade looks fairly neutral, if not slightly cool-leaning. I would have been pretty upset if I had bought this palette expecting a full range of neutral-to-cool leaning colors only to open it and see another warm-toned palette. It’s getting harder and harder to find truly cool-toned premade palettes. I have way too much pink in my skin to comfortably wear a lot of warmer tones; which really stinks because this palette has some of my favorite colors!
Such differént pretty colors but I don’t think they would go with my complexion. They would make a gorgeous Autumn painting.
Love this color palette of those murky greens, golds and browns… this reminds me of my parent’s apartment in the 70’s hahahaha… too bad it underperformed, gives me a good excuse to let my wallet have a break hahaha
So far I’ve resisted buying, but I think if you had given this an A I would have gone for it! I do love how the matte shades swatch.
I tried five of the shades yesterday. So far, I’m not impressed and leaning toward returning the palette or exchanging it for the Rust Palette. I’m going to play with it a bit more first. All the shades are really dusty and dry, with lots of fallout, and a lot of the shades are kind of sheer. Shot Gun barely showed up on me, and I have really pale skin and used primer. I tried using the shadow wet, and that just sheered it out more. Chronic was really hard to blend and still ended up looking a bit patchy. Faded and Roll It were pretty nice, aside from all the fallout. I had to use Wax wet to make it show up. I’m going to try the warm brown and orangish shades tomorrow.
So far, I definitely would not call this an easy to use palette. Patting on the colors seems the way to go, and I’ll try some other techniques. I’m going to watch some more videos on YouTube for tips, try a few different primers and bases, and some different techniques. If I can get it to work over a white base, I might keep it, as the colors really are unique and beautiful when they work. It might end up being good as a companion palette.
