Scandalust

Marc Jacobs Beauty Scandalust Eye-Conic Eyeshadow Palette ($49.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a deeper, warm neutral palette with a pop of red. The eyeshadow formula is supposed to have “lasting, velvety-rich pigment.” Five of the seven shades were quite pigmented, but two fell short in terms of pigmentation and one had a drier, looser texture that made it harder to use. Overall, it was a solid palette of warmer neutrals that had a good mix of light and dark shades for versatility.

A few obvious differences between the new Eye-Conic palettes and the previous Style Eye-Con No. 7 palettes: they actually decreased by $10 in price (they used to be $59) with only a slight decrease in quantity (0.21 oz. vs. 0.25 oz.), and each eyeshadow has been named. The ingredient lists differ from shade to shade, which makes it harder to really compare easily, and I saw a lot of similar ingredients but order often varied; they seemed similar to me just by touching, wearing, and applying with maybe slightly higher dimethicone quantities in the shimmery shades, so those felt creamier, and a slightly firmer press (but not stiff) for more matte shades (so less powder kicked up in the pan) and marginally silkier for some shades. I had good luck with a lot of the brand’s eyeshadows in the past (I wouldn’t have said they needed to revamp it).

Hot Pants

Hot Pants is a light, yellowed beige with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had excellent pigmentation with a soft, smooth consistency that was blendable without being too soft or too powdery in the pan. The color wore well for eight hours on me before fading.

At the Office

At the Office is a light-medium beige with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation in a single layer, while the texture was soft, smooth, and blendable on the skin. There was slight powderiness in the pan, but it did not translate onto the eyelid. This shade lasted well for eight hours on me.

Cause a Fuss

Cause a Fuss is a muted, medium-dark rosy copper with subtle, warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff in one layer, which was somewhat buildable but would be best applied over a primer or with a slightly dampened brush. The texture was drier and slightly looser in feel, which led to the sparkle separating from the base color. Applied dry (without primer), it lasted for seven hours and had some fallout.

That's Why

That’s Why is a medium brown with warm, orange undertones and a matte finish. The consistency was incredibly smooth and velvety without any powderiness, but it was still blendable and easy to work with on the lid. It was richly pigmented and wore well for eight hours on me.

They Call Her

They Call Her is a deep, reddish copper with warm undertones and a metallic finish. The pigmentation was completely opaque, while the texture was soft, denser, and creamier–I could feel the silicone in it–but it wasn’t so dense that it became stiff or difficult to pick up with a slew of makeup brushes. It applied evenly to bare skin, but it did not seem to appear as metallic without packing it on or using it with a dampened brush. This shade stayed on well for eight hours.

Little Miss

Little Miss is a deep, brownish plum with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation that applied fairly easily to bare skin. The eyeshadow had a soft, silky feel in the pan, but it took a little extra effort to diffuse and blend along the edges when I tested it. It wore well for eight hours on me before fading noticeably.

Scandalous

Scandalous is a dark red with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. There were faint sparkles in the pan, but they just did not translate on the lid, so it was largely a matte finish in practice. It had semi-opaque, buildable pigmentation that applied evenly and blended out well on the lid. It stayed on nicely for eight hours.

Christine there was a Smashbox palette out a few years ago that I have and barely dipped into called Cherry Smoke. Would you say that palette is a pretty good dupe for this one? I’m thinking it is, so maybe I don’t need this one after all. Cherry Smoke also had coppers/reds/browns/peaches. Thanks. Every time I look at one of these palettes I feel like I have a dupe for it.

You may be right Christine! Maybe I have to learn some patience and wait until the stores here get these is stock then I can take my palette to compare. It seems like it takes months before the stores get items. They told me they aren’t getting Naked Heat until the end of July!!!!!!!! It will be old news by then lol.

Michelle – I had the Smashbox Cherry Smoke palette until recently, and I have the MJ Scandalust palette. It’s just my opinion but I wouldn’t consider one a dupe for the other. Besides, the quality of MJ is superior to Smashbox (although the Smashbox is good). Hope that helps!

I must need some sleep because I’m having hallucinations – I thought I read something about a price DECREASE!!!! Yikes, first it’s discounts/markdowns at MAC (and the occasional GWP) and now a price drop from Marc Jacobs???? Next, Hourglass will be offering extra value for money on their Holiday palettes!

MrsC Avatar

It’s cheaper in price because there’s no sleeve and brush. I’m sure that’s factored into the cost as well. I really wanted the sleeve but I won’t miss the brush at all.

Thanks for the getting this review up so fast. I bought this and will be returning as the colors are pretty disappointing, especially Scandalous. It appeared much more vibrant in photos but swatches poorly. Glad you listed dupes as I have Stay Golden and it’s what I wanted Scandalous to be.

Red, dark brown and a bunch of oranges. This is almost exactly like the Manny Mua palette minus the insomnia duochrome. Very uninpired and plagiaristic, as for a high end brand, such as MJ. Yes the colors aren’t exact dupes, but on the skin nobody will see the difference.

This is probably the 20th version of warm brown/red/Modern Renaissance palette we’ve seen, but the color combo here is well done, and the price point is attractive considering there’s 7 shadows, the HE name and elegant packaging. And kudos to MJ for lowering the price point! Unlike other brands (ahem Tom Ford) that just keep jacking up the price every year

This is weird, but I don’t like how the palette is so long (like physically, in length). It wouldn’t fit into my storage organization/method at all! …but I also didn’t like how the new Clinique palette had different sized circle pans randomly scattered either so I dunno. Otherwise–always good to see shadows perform well. 🙂
