Makeup Geek Fuji Eyeshadow ($6.00 for 0.064 oz.) is described as a “bright apple green with a demi-matte finish.” It’s a light-medium, chartreuse green with warm, yellow undertones and a satin finish. Makeup Geek Dragonfly Eyeshadow ($6.00 for 0.064 oz.) is described as a “bright medium teal with a matte finish.” It’s a muted, medium-dark green with a hint of cooler, blue undertones and a matte finish. It had good color payoff with a soft, fairly smooth texture that was rather dusty. It sheered out quite a bit on bare skin, and it faded after six hours. Huda Beauty Emerald #6 (LE, ) is darker (95% similar). Morphe Jada (LE, ) is more muted (90% similar). Inglot #372 (P, $6.00) is cooler (95% similar). Makeup Geek Boo Berry Eyeshadow ($6.00 for 0.064 oz.) is described as a “denim blue with gray undertones and a matte finish.” It’s a muted, medium-dark cornflower blue with a matte finish. It had sheer color payoff that was difficult to build-up, even when patted on with a flat, dense brush. The only way it could be workable is over a slightly tacky, white base, which would give it something to cling to and help intensify the shade. The texture was incredibly powdery, which made it even harder to work with and prone to patchiness on the skin. Inglot #388 (P, $6.00) is darker, brighter (95% similar). LORAC Denim (LE, $19.00) is lighter (95% similar). Inglot #332 (P, $6.00) is darker (90% similar). NARS Outremer (DC, $25.00) is brighter (90% similar). Makeup Geek Time Travel Eyeshadow ($6.00 for 0.064 oz.) is described as a “deep teal with gray undertones and a matte finish.” It’s a muted, dark teal with subtle, cool undertones and a very fine shimmer. The texture was thin, dusty, but it was fairly smooth at least! It yielded mostly opaque color payoff, as long as you don’t dare to blend it–otherwise it sheers out considerably and gets everywhere. Yet another disappointing eyeshadow from this release, and it makes one wonder what happened.
Marc Jacobs Beauty Pea-cocky (LE, ) is more shimmery, darker (95% similar). Viseart Cool Mattes 2 #11 (PiP, ) is cooler (90% similar). Makeup Geek Stealth Eyeshadow ($6.00 for 0.064 oz.) is described as a “medium gray with strong slate blue undertones and a matte finish.” It’s a muted, medium bluish-gray with cool undertones and a semi-matte finish. It was so powdery; it was like the product wasn’t binding together when pressed against the skin. It was messy to use, turned patchy, and was unimpressive. It lasted for six hours before fading noticeably. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Free Spirit No. 14 (LE, ) is darker (95% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty For Less (PiP, ) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Sydney Grace Boss Babe (P, $5.25) is cooler (90% similar). Wet 'n' Wild I'm His Breezey #3 (DC, $2.29) is darker (90% similar). MAC Linger Softly (DC, $21.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Wth?! Oh well. I just got MAC Plumage, which is working for me, so I’m not too heartbroken about Time Travel. I was considering Boo Berry but… no more!
Plumage is more buildable – it’s one of those MAC mattes that works better than it swatches, IMO.
Even though the shadows are meh, that look is amazing, Christine!!
Thanks, Fern!
Oh my god. What a freaking disaster. That’s HORRIBLE! I’ve never passed up a Makeup Geek launch before but there’s no way I want to spend my money on that kind of quality. I can’t even BELIEVE Boo Berry. Such an adorable name but that swatch is a freaking DISASTER.
It was a disaster on, too 🙁 So sad!
Aw man! This makes me sad 🙁 I love MUG. I’ll wait to see the next batches of matte reviews before I get some. I do think I need the duo chromes though. I can’t resist the shiny!
The duochromes worked better for me!
Thank you for the review! I’ve heard so many good things about Makeup Geek eye shadows that I decided to try them out. I just ordered the new mattes from Makeup Geek yesterday (my first purchase from them), so it’s a bummer that they’re getting such low scores. I do have to say though, that eye look you created with them is gorgeous!
They have some good ones, but sadly, these aren’t them.
Fingers crossed you are able to get more use out of the ones you got, Nicole! I’d recommend a good primer, maybe a white base 🙂
Thank you for the tips! I’m going to try my best to make them work.
This release isn’t doing so well…
So far, not so good!
Love the colors but ugh, the pigmentation is so weak 🙁
Agreed!
Oh this makes me sad 🙁 I want some colorful mattes to go with my UD Spectrum palette, which is all shimmers. Will check out some of the dupes to see if they are any better. Love your eye look!
KVD’s palette is better, if you’re looking for some more mattes!
I trust your eyeshadow reviews completely. I can see the dustiness of a couple of colours. But no doubt, next week there will be a youtuber that talks about how these have the most ‘incredible pigmentation!’
Cheers for your honest reviews!
My pleasure, Fontaine! 🙂
Wow these reviews are disappointing. I got Vintage, Cherry Cola, Enchanted Forest ( don’t think you’ve reviewed those yet ) and Morocco. I’ve been wanting a deep matte green like EF for a long time and while I only swatched it, I can already say that it’s not quite as deep as I’d like. But hopefully it will perform well! Vintage faded quickly on me but I love the color so I’ml willing to work with it; maybe use a different brush. I have worn the others yet.
As you said with of Time Travel, it does make me wonder what happened. Hopefully the rest will review better.
Looking forward to your thoughts Christine!
Sad to hear Vintage wasn’t perfect for you, Megan! Fingers crossed the others do better.
Did you use a primer with Vintage? I’ve been really happy with Cherry Cola and Morocco, but didn’t get any of the others in the new launch. I’m hoping Vintage will perform well with a primer, though–that one’s on my list if it does.
Love the ‘chameleon’ look you’ve done here, in spite of Boo Berry’s atrocious performance – F ?! Fuji is such an unusual colour, it’s intriguing. I also like Dragonfly and Time Travel.
The colors had such potential in the pans!
I like the names. But, I will just be passing on these. As always, thanks for reviewing Christine. Always nice when you find the winners!
Always a pleasure! 🙂
Wow, these are just awful.
🙁
This is TRAGIC. Just feeling very sad over these. I had really wanted Kiwi, Dragonfly and Time Travel, but will instead try for dupes. Big letdown.
Echoing you, Nancy! Sad over these being SO bad.
Seems like all the interesting “good” colors are duds! Finding inexpensive matte shadows is nearly impossible! I can find a few colors here and there but can’t find a brand that has a variety of descent performing colors.
It is an uphill battle for sure 🙁
I’m so surprised that these were not great. Usually the makeup geek stuff is so good! Super bummed.
I was really surprised, too!
It’s sad that the pigmentation and the quality is lacking on these. I was excited for these shades to.
I was really excited for the release, too!
OMG, I love those eye looks you create using all the colors! So pretty!
Thanks, Kelly!
This is so disappointing. I enjoy several matte MUG shadows. Creme Brulee, Cocoa Bear, Bitten, Cupcake, Barcelona Beach, and Desert Sands are awesome. Mirage from the Vegas Lights palette was good too. I hope they don’t change the others to this new formula because it doesn’t seem to be good.
Cocoa Bear is probably one of their best mattes ever.
Jeeeeeez, some of these were ones I REALLY wanted. Fuji, dragonfly and time travel…they looked good in the swatches I was really hopeful. I may just pass on this whole launch completely. Is Morocco the only good one so far?
I think it might be the only good one 🙁
Aw man. very disappointed. Number one thing for mattes: be blendable. So it sucks to hear you say Time Travel is not blendable maybe they will reformulate sometime soon.
I hope they will listen to customer feedback on these! I had hoped to see readers chime in with better experiences (maybe I got duds), but I’ve only seen so-so to poor reviews thus far.
These aren’t particularly good ratings for the products. Lots of brands have trouble doing matte colours and this is an example of that. These look awful and it is a testimony to your makeup skills Christine that you were able to do such a glorious look with such poor eye shadows.
Aw, you are very kind, Genevieve!
That’s a whole lot of nope!
I hear ya!
I really like the few MUG eyeshadows I have, and I had such high hopes for these. I think it’s sad that they are so bad. I’ll not spend on this collection, that’s for sure.
I did like some of the duochromes though, so I might get some of those.
I liked the duochromes a lot more!
I am SO disappointed with this new formula. I was thinking of ordering ten or more shadows from MG… but not anymore. =( I’m actually upset about how horrible some of the swatches are. I spent a few hours researching various colors trying to pick out ones that would look best on me. Sigh… I guess I’ll be ordering some ABH singles instead.
Me too, Cat! I couldn’t believe how dusty/powdery some of them were.
Pretty eye look! Love how you paired the liners to match the shadows!
Thanks, Denise!
I know mattes are hard to get right but ouch!!! The shade I was interested in are preforming better though. FUJI, DRAGONFLY, and TIME TRAVEL.
They can be tough! At the same time, why put out 20? I’d rather ten really great mattes than a bunch of subpar ones 🙁
