Makeup Geek Duochrome Eyeshadows Reviews, Photos, Swatches (Part 2)
Makeup Geek Havoc Eyeshadow
Makeup Geek Havoc Eyeshadow ($6.00 for 0.06 oz.) is described as a “warm red-brown base with teal reflects.” It’s a dark, coppery brown with green-teal shimmer and a frosted finish. It had good pigmentation with a soft, smooth, and blendable texture that was on the denser side compared to most Makeup Geek eyeshadows (not quite as dense as their Foiled range). The green-teal shift is subtle, and a lot of the shimmer seems to get eaten up by the warmer base. This is one of the more dupable duochrome shades out there, as a lot of brands have it (not a bad thing to have more options, but you may have something like it already). The color wore well for eight hours. Too Faced Girly (LE, $16.00) is lighter (95% similar). Wet 'n' Wild Comfort Zone #8 (PiP, ) is lighter, cooler (95% similar). Makeup Geek I’m Peachless Eyeshadow ($6.00 for 0.06 oz.) is described as a “buff base with peachy-pink reflects.” It’s a light-medium, pinky-peach with soft, gold sparkle and shimmer that shifts from a light white-beige to a warmer peach. It had fairly good pigmentation with a lightly crumbly, though blendable, texture. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me. Zoeva Handmade (PiP, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). Makeup Geek Ritzy Eyeshadow ($6.00 for 0.06 oz.) is described as a “warm red-brown base with green and gold reflects.” It’s a reddish-brown base with lighter green-gold shimmer–their description is very accurate on this one. The finish is more of a frosted sheen with a subtle duochrome (more nuanced but it goes from more or less reflective than really shifting). The texture was dense, smooth, and blendable with good pigmentation. The color wore for eight hours on me. Buxom Rose Gold (P, $12.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Pat McGrath Provocatrix (LE, $25.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). ColourPop Tea Garden (P, $4.50) is lighter (85% similar). Makeup Geek Steampunk Eyeshadow ($6.00 for 0.06 oz.) is described as a “black base with rich copper reflects.” It’s a deep brown with subtle, warm undertones and a pearly sheen. I can see the black base peeking through, but it doesn’t shift–no matter how I angled my arm, I really couldn’t detect the color really changing. It’s an interesting shade, but I wouldn’t call it a duochrome. It had great color payoff with a smooth, buttery texture that applied well. It wore well for seven and a half hours before creasing. Dior Fahrenheit (781) (LE, $31.00) is more shimmery, warmer (95% similar). Make Up For Ever ME614 Graphite Brown (P, $17.00) is darker (95% similar). Makeup Geek Voltage Eyeshadow ($6.00 for 0.06 oz.) is described as a “vanilla base with champagne-yellow reflects.” It’s a yellowed, white gold with a metallic sheen that shifts from light white to warmer, pale gold. It had good pigmentation with a soft, blendable texture that wasn’t too dense or too soft. It applied well with even, smooth coverage and wore well for seven and a half hours before creasing. Too Faced Beamin' (LE, $16.00) is warmer (95% similar). Sephora White Gold (LE, ) is less shimmery, lighter (95% similar). ColourPop We Jammin' (P, $9.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Makeup Geek Karma Eyeshadow ($6.00 for 0.06 oz.) is described as a “golden base with yellow-green reflects.” It’s a bright, golden yellow with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. I don’t get a real green shift; it goes from brighter yellow to more of a yellowed orange with less of a reflective sheen. The texture was soft, blendable, but a little crumbly, and it creased after seven and a half hours of wear. Natasha Denona Pearl (56P) (PiP, $29.00) is lighter (95% similar). KKW Beauty Armenian (LE, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). Ardency Inn Sunday (DC, $21.00) is darker (95% similar). NARS Studly (LE, $29.00) is darker, more muted (95% similar). I think i need steampunk and voltage. Steampunk is unique, I do agree with you that it is not really a duochrome.
Are you going to review the pigments as well?
I will! I’m working as fast as I can – so sorry!
Don’t apologize! We know how hard you work!
I really think these all look nice! I’m definitely going to need Steampunk, I’m peachless and Havoc out of these. I can’t imagine how they will do with a primer. So excited for the loose pigment reviews!
Awesome! I think you’ll enjoy them, Nicole.
Steampunk is pretty. I don’t have any cooler burgundy-brown shades. It seems like it’s one that tends to lean warm. Voltage would be such a pretty inner corner highlight for holiday parties!
That would be a great way to use Voltage, Lacey!
Well, I’m glad I waited for your reviews. It looks like most of these don’t have a strong duo chrome shift. They are still pretty though, so I might try a couple just to see how they fare on my oily lids. I’m wary of doing a big order, as they don’t accept returns. I have a couple of dupes for Voltage, so I’m eyeing I’m Peachless.
Pretty, just not duochromes, unfortunately!
Peachless and Voltage look amazing for those super light, ultra reflective inner corner ( or 1/3 ?) of the lid! Very brightening! And of course, I also love Steampunk because of it being a super close dupe for UD West. Loving Ritzy and possibly Havoc as well.
Voltage is So brightening!
Steampunk reads copper bronze on me with a greyed navy…so effin’ cool~ I also picked up Havoc, but it reads too yellow on me, the only miss from my picks. Between Secret Garden and Steampunk.. I would have a hard time choosing my favourite; they are both so seriously beautiful on.
It is a cool shade! I like how it blends out and lightens along the edges.
How does I’m Peachless compare to KvD Thunderstruck? When I’ve swatched Thunderstruck it looks like it has a bit of a coppery peachy shift.
Peachless is a lot warmer!
I’m excited to at least one of these. Thanks for the review!
*try
My pleasure, Alicia! Have fun with these!
well…I’m kind of wishing I had waited for your review before buying all these…but, I *may* have bought them anyway tbh. I didn’t own any duochrome eyeshadows really, so these are my first of those and of MUG’s! Kinda sad they aren’t all truer duochromes though. Nonetheless, most are still very pretty. I love how creative you are with color in your eyelooks! Beautiful and interesting!!
Aww! A lot of them are still really pretty, IMO, even if they aren’t duochromes, they have more depth than your average shimmery eyeshadow 🙂
Thanks Christine! I do agree they are pretty and I’m sure I’ll use them regardless. I feel like I’d have to go full on loose pigment to get real duochromes, which…not sure I’m willing to do! I just love the ease of pressed and cream products too much. Like, these I will for sure use, but the pigments I’d probably never reach for, ya know?
I know exactly what you mean! 🙂
These are all pretty gorgeous colours – even though I am not a traditional neutrals fan. But I could really live and like these. Your eye look is just gorgeous Christine. It says something about the products when I even really like Steampunk. Fabulous.
Thanks a lot, Genevieve!!
Any word on whether or not these will be permanent or limited edition?
They are permanent. Please see the “Permanent” label next to each one in the Glossover 🙂
I can’t stand such big claims and big talk for products that don’t cut the mustard to even stand up to their name. I know that’s this industry in general, but still… More like duo-fails for me, not happening.
My guess is that they still use whatever ingredient(s) for a duochrome product so regardless, that’s how they’ll end up labeled even if it doesn’t quite translate.
I can imagine, that the lighter ones would look really great on a black base!
Totally! 🙂
Hey, Christine! Out of the whiteish, pale colors, which one would you recommend? And which is the closest to MAC´s Vellum? I´d like to buy Vellum, but it´s constantly sold out online and in store (in Germany), I just checked last week at a Pro Store
Phantom is the closest eyeshadow, I think.
Havoc and Ritzy look soooooo beautiful! <3
Yayy!
When I saw these my first thought was, “OMG Melissa needs ALL THESE SHADES!”
Hah 😀
Is it just me or are Havoc and Ritzy pretty much the same thing? I don’t know, they seem so similar to me I wouldn’t be able to tell them apart. The only difference I can notice is the shimmer in Ritzy is a lot stronger/more noticeable than Havoc… I might just skip the eyeshadows and go for the pigments instead.
They’re in the same vein, but Ritzy is a lot warmer 🙂
Steampunk might work for me but the rest are too warm. They are all amazing though.
I’m glad you found one that might work!
Steampunk is very interesting. I quite like Ritzy as well.
Steampunk has a lot of depth!
I really like the Steampunk, Voltage and I’m Peachless swatches. The colours you’ve used on your eyes really make them stand out. 🙂
Thanks, Sharon!
Whats the green-gold liner on the bottom of your eyes? I can’t seem to find it on this page…and it doesn’t seem to be a combo of the eyeshadows?
Thanks!
Sephora Indulge Yourself!
I purchased four of these and unfortunately i’m just not impressed. 1 was a total fail- steampunk i thought was going to be my favorite and wasn’t. What I’m finding is they are reading on the eyes more of the base shades. So the black is a blue/green undertone and I see that more than the red brown shimmer and it actually stained my brushes when applying it this morning (very messy to use lol). For Ritzy and Havoc the shimmer seems to pull away from the base as well, kind of like if you get transferring onto the upper crease with deep-set eyes. That happens with the foiled shadows as well which doesn’t really bother me, its more that you really can’t see much of the “duo” hue . Voltage was one i added last min and actually turned out to love. its a super brightening shade, very little transfer on me.
I’m sorry to hear it, Anne! 🙁 Have you tried using these over a black base at all? You might like them better that way.
