NARS x Steven Klein Colour Collection for Holiday 2015

François Nars and Steven Klein come together with design legend Fabien Baron to create an exquisite fantasy played to extremes.

“Steven is an iconic fashion photographer. His work defies the rules of photography—it’s arresting and provocative. It pushes boundaries and elicits a reaction. I like that. He perfectly embodies the spirit of NARS.” —François Nars, Founder & Creative Director

“I’ve always had the highest regard for François’ work. He is the pioneer of moving from one of the greatest makeup artists to creating great makeup. It is super exciting for me to collaborate using my photographs and joining them with his cosmetic genius.” —Steven Klein, Photographer

That Sephora exclusive blush palette is without a doubt the best face palette he’s released in years! I just hope it performs as well as it looks. Not that I need it since I’ve barely made a dent in last year’s. But it’s just so lovely!

WARPAINTandUnicorns Avatar

I’m findingmyself interested in a bumber of things. The Vengeful blush, I hope is good because that due I think I can make better use out of it than any of the other blushes.

I love all the shades in the HUMORESQUE AUDACIOUS LIPSTICK COFFRET, but I’m afriad of what the price would be Canadian at it’s on $1 off the regular Lipsstick US each so not much of a deal there.

I love the packaging for the AN ABNORMAL FEMALE LIP PENCIL COFFRET. *_*

Kay Avatar

Me too! I wanna know more about the humoresque coffees but I’m wondering if those shades are already in the permanent collection or they are 5 new shades for this collection tho….

Laura M Avatar

I have always wanted Sex Machine and Dragon Girl. This seems like the perfect opportunity to get those lip pencils in that set. There’s some gorgeous stuff here. I’m hoping the quality is excellent!!

Katherine T. Avatar

Uh, I’m not sure about the Friday the 13th hockey masks and creepy photos, but this makeup collection looks stunning!! I’m eyeing the purple gloss, some of the lipstick sets, the Dual Intensity shadow palette, etc. Oh hell, just take my money!!!

Nicole Avatar

Oh My! My chin just fell to the floor! This is one heck of a collection! I was totally loving the whole packaging thing until I got toward the bottom. I know it’s art. I’m all for freedom of art and speech and all of that. But, I’m glad I don’t like the Nars mascara. I do love the Nars liners though. But, I am drooling over just about all of this. I was thinking the Audacious lipstick set would be a dream. Then I realized I own 3 of the 5 and Then I did the math and realized $32 x5= $160 so hmm. I’m not so sure that’s such a great deal. But, a super nice gift. Can’t wait for reviews!

Nancy T Avatar

Mmm, Besame Mucho looks delicioso!
Between that or the Dolce Vita trio, I’m in. The Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow palette has my interest as well.
Gotta mention how lovely the promo pic looks, super glam but edgy!

But I do not care for some of the packaging pics, especially one replicating something pretty horrible ; a “Snuff Film”, even though it subbed a car for a small animal, I knew immediately what it was and felt sick to my stomach.

Nancy T Avatar

I honestly hope and pray that what you’ve said is all he meant, but it freaked me the hell out when I saw it! It really *could* mean a worthless affluence/ disposable glamour message instead. I truly hope so.

Katherine T. Avatar

Yeah, I got the same suspicion as you, and the set is called Killer Heels. I don’t mind edgy and weird, but some of this packaging is really pushing it……

Rachel R. Avatar

kjh below made a good point: ” ‘ “I don’t get snuff film out of that package: isn’t it called ‘killer heels?’ Cars definitely kill.’ ”

The great thing about art is that it’s open to interpretation and can make us think.

The bad thing is sometimes people put out images just to shock people and get attention. I think for myself, I need to find out more about Klein and his art before I make a final judgment.

Nancy T Avatar

That’s what I just did a little earlier today. These images are actually much more tame than the artwork/photography shown when I googled “Steven Klein Photographer”, where under images I saw lots of BSM, murder scenes and niw wish I could unsee. He even said he DOES go for shock, and gets inspiration from horror movies! I am NOT against freedom of expression or creative license, I just don’t feel comfortable with it attached to what I may choose to buy, but especially BEAUTY.

Veronica Avatar

Oh, whoa. You’re right. A lot of sexualized violence in his photography. I guess I’ll be passing it up for the some reason I bypassed the Bourdin collection. :-/

Rachel R. Avatar

Thanks for the info, Nancy. I finally got a chance to look into him myself. It seems his fashion photography is trying to deconstruct glamour. The BDSM doesn’t bother me, as long it’s consensual, and the models in the photos I looked at didn’t look frightened to me.

I saw a couple of DISTURBING things, though. There’s one with a dead woman, and a man’s hand on her exposed breast. That doesn’t sit well with me. There’s one of a man tied down in the woods that just looks like bondage, but which Klein says was “women in power…raping him.” This was the article: http://nymag.com/nymetro/shopping/fashion/features/n_10371/ . He explains he’s motivations more in it, but I don’t agree that rape is the way to put any one into power. Rape isn’t OK just because the gender roles are switched out.

Sex crimes, rape and snuff are NOT my idea of art. There also one of a man who looks like the vampire chick next to him skinned him. More over-the-top horror movie-ish, but still…it’s a person who would have died in a horrible way. Yet I read some pretty nasty horror books, so maybe I’m just a hypocrite. IDK

I think he’s a talented artist and photographer, and some of his ideas are good. But seeing rape as empowering, or way to show a celebrity as vulnerable, go to far for me.

I don’t judge anyone who feels differently, who thinks he much worse, or much better, than I feel. I can totally see the arguments for both sides.

Elena Avatar

Can anyone clarify if the makeup on Karen Elson on the Despair blush palette was designed by Kabuki? I always thought that Kabuki did the original and then worked with Steven Klein for the magazine. It a magnificent editorial effort, celebrating Kabuki’s iconic looks that send shivers down my spine. I guess I’m confused, as looking at the packaging I’d assume the makeup was performed by Nars. Steven Klein = Artistry & Grit!!!!

Elena Avatar

Thank you! That’s what I thought. I can’t wrap my head around as to why Nars would use another makeup artist’s work on the packaging instead of his own collaborations with the photographer. Kinda lame.

Mariella Avatar

There’s almost too much in this collection to get my head around. I’d be all over that Dual Intensity eyeshadow palette but for the fact that I already had Subra and Sycorax (which is also black) but I love that taupe shade and also the 2nd single shadow shown (I’m guessing it’s Never too Late).

Elizabeth Avatar

Wow, I really love quite a bit of this collection, and I really haven’t been thrilled by anything in a really long time. What a nice difference from other collabs and other brands who spit out collections every other week. I can’t wait to check this out.

kjh Avatar

I think that last mask is a facial rejuvenation mask…see the control box attached? I think that one is a bloody brilliant send up: OF U/W, OF hair rollers, elbow length dishwashing gloves. All for Mah Man! I’ll be sure to have dinner and martinis ready, when he gets home. Hysterical! And it goes along with the rest of the mask symbolism…which is pretty overt + def makeup related. My favorite is the bathing beauty and the T Rex. Too bad the DI e/s + I don’t get along. I don’t get snuff film out of that package: isn’t it called ‘killer heels?’ Cars definitely kill. Is there an original with a small fluffy being impaled? That would outdo my limit + I believe in the Antonin Artaud quote about theatre can apply to make up: ‘Theatre is like the bubonic plague.’ The last Nars palette i got was the splendor in the grass blush Guy Boudin one + I keep it in-box. And i watch Investigation Discovery, so GB put together two of my personal ‘aesthetics.’ UD claims to be edgy: this packaging IS edgy. If it bothers you, you can toss it. It won’t be on the product, I do believe. Some of the older shades, e.g. Joyous Red, Fire Down Below have been eclipsed by Audacious. LOVE THEM! Not enough love for some of his classics. This looks like something for everyone. Quite comprehensive. Personally, I’m drawn to both blush palettes. Gonna go swatch some other stuff to see if we agree. I think he hit it out of the park!

Veronica Avatar

Well, the avante garde aesthetic certainly seems to fit with NARS. It looks like a great Holiday collection, but most of the ones that catch my eye are shades I already own something from. I might go after Stud, though, if it’s not too warm for my skintone.

Genevieve Avatar

Love the promo picture – it really is one of the best I have seen.
Sometimes their models look horrendous – perhaps the last or second last collection. A really pale Tilda Swindon as I recall. She looked very ghostly and it was not an advertisement for their products. And secondly, the inference of that particular photo was that this is what beauty looks like – thereby excluding 95% of women who are not that pale. The pictures on the packaging of some of the products in this collection are actually quite unappealing – very freaky. So that also puts me off the brand
However, the holiday collection looks really good and very interesting. Hopefully the quality will be there. Love those red lipsticks.

Nika2799 Avatar

I have all the Dual Intensity Shadows so I have to get that kit and the only Audacious lipstick I own in that kit is Raquel so I would also like to get that set.I love all the Audacious lipsticks I have they are amazing!!I also really love the new blush sets and lipgloss. This whole collection is looking like it could be really great just need to see the reviews and swatches! That will be the deciding factor for me on the single eyeshadows and lipsticks that are not Audacious.

Jane Avatar

Shades of Guy Bourdain. While in his work outside this collection he depicts nude men, he also depicts lots of violence, prettied up. Women’s rights are still not a guarantee, even here in America with anti-choice forces assaulting reproductive rights on every front. I’m not in a place where I think the depiction of women as submissive object is a thing I want to pay money for, especially for a thing that has an intended audience of about 95% women. It glorifies misogyny, and I’m not paying for the privilege.

Rachel R. Avatar

Just to make clear, I’m not saying your interpretations or opinions are wrong; I’m just adding mine for discussion’s sake. I can see your point.

I don’t personally get a feeling of misogyny with this set of photos. To me, they are a comment on beauty and objectification. There is a horrible side to it; an ugliness.

I’m also into more “alternative” makeup looks and colors, so I also am attracted to non-standard depictions of beauty. One person’s “ugly” or “creepy,” is another person’s “unique” or “beautiful.”

Jules Avatar

I think it’s unfair to characterise this artist as mysogynistic. He’s not doing anything to devalue women any more than the entire fashion and beauty industry already treats us like objects that need to be changed by makeup. His use of masks in particular is very clever. We hide our real faces and put on artificial ones because we believe that is beauty and sexuality. And we do that ourselves, believing we are free. Nothing objectifying about that at all, just something to make people think. As for Bourdain, I thought the violent images were raw social commentary on how these industries chew up and spit out women and hurt us under the guise of glamour. What we do to our booed often IS violence as much as a car crash is, but it’s prettied up. You’re free to buy or not buy whatever you want, but it’s a big stretch to accuse Klein of being a mysogynist and quite a serious accusation that I don’t see represented anywhere in these images. It’s unfair to the artist.

Bonnie Avatar

Totally agree with your takes on his artwork, Rachel and Jules. I don’t see it as misogynistic either, but as social commentary on the beauty industry and what we consider glamorous, lust-worthy. I love his photography, I think it’s really thought provoking and interesting.

Jules Avatar

Wow, those photos are amazing. That’s truly art, not advertising. It’s daring, which is what makeup should be. I probably won’t buy any of these products but I’m happy to see Nars making a provocative collection – I’m bored with boring!

Blue Avatar

I actually don’t feel like I need any of the makeup itself but each promo image is killing me here. The aesthetic of it is such a reminder of why NARS is so captivating. His taste is just so spot on and fresh yet playfully over the top. <3

Sharon M Avatar

I’d really like to get the mini lipstick set and the Dolce Vita/Patong Rose lip set… but these will be more expensive here in Canada so over $100 just for those two items, plus 15% tax. Will wait and see how they look in store, and maybe try on a couple of the offerings. I’ve never owned a NARS product.

Michele @Binxcat4ever Avatar

So I guess the answer to my question is probably 11/1 as Sephora is an “other retailer”. I guess I was hoping the exclusives were also going to be early release. Sadly, I missed the lipsticks on the NARS site so I’m hoping I can get those when the other stores get the collab on 11/1.
