MAC Reel Sexy Lipsticks

There are four MAC Lipsticks ($14.50 for 0.10 oz.) debuting with the Reel Sexy collection that will hit stores on April 5th. They are: Heroine (bright violet plum), Pink Popcorn (lavender), Reel Sexy (light bright coral), and Watch Me Simmer (bright pink-orange).

  • Heroine is a magenta purple with a near matte finish–there is just a hint of sheen in the finish. It applies opaque and smoothly, despite being a matte finish. It looks a lot like MAC Violetta, which is a smidgen darker and has shimmer. Milani Magenta Madness is quite pinker.
  • Pink Popcorn is a soft petal pink with a very subtle blue undertone. It has a lustre finish, though the color payoff is semi-opaque, actually. MAC Naughty Saute is paler, more opaque, and bluer-based. Revlon Carnation is a bit darker, less blue-based.
  • Reel Sexy is a peach-orange with a little hint of coral, but it looks more peach/orange than anything else. It has an amplified finish, but it’s a bit streaky when applied and tends to settle into lips to some degree. The color coverage is opaque. MAC Gotta Dash is similar but sheerer. Bobbi Brown Soft Coral is more orange and darker. Illamasqua Brink is very similar. YSL Peach Passion is similar.
  • Watch Me Simmer can be seen here, as it was just released in February of this year!

MAC lipsticks are vanilla-scented but have no discernible taste.  They typically last between three and four hours on the lips, but it largely depends on the finish. Lustre finishes wear off a little faster, between two and three hours, depending on the richness of the shade. Amplified and matte finishes tend to wear better, sometimes lasting as long as six hours. I tested out Heroine, and it lasted for over six hours and stained my lips for hours after that. Pink Popcorn only wore for three hours, and it did leave my lips feeling chapped, as lustres often do.

Because Watch Me Simmer was in such high-demand when it first launched this past February, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was one of the first lipsticks to sell out.  Heroine may also catch peoples eye, because it is purplish.

Aaaand once again MAC gives multiple colors the same name. Heroine came out with WW last Spring, but was a completely different color. Is it laziness? incompetence? Lack of imagination ? Things like these are such a huge pet peeve for me.

Katharina Avatar

HAHAH oh mac. Maybe their mind set is that WW Heroine is like in the terms of a vigilante while RS is heroine as in the drug….? Still confusing nonetheless.

Judy Avatar

Love Heroine lipstick!! I love purples!!! Very disappointed that MAC noted that Pink Popcorn would be a lavender color, but instead it’s a sheerish pink color. Oh well. Was hoping for something similar to Lavender Whip. Maybe in the future.

beck Avatar

Reel Sexy look interesting!I might pick it up. Pink Popcorn I think I will pass on I was hoping it would have more oomph! Deciding if I will ever finish one Watch Me Simmer to warrant a BU purchase. Hmmm…

Alyssa Avatar

I was thinking the same thing about Reel Sexy and Jazzed! They look really similar just seeing by the swatches but I think I’m going to bring Jazzed when the collection comes out for comparison just to be sure, they’re such beautiful shades.

Mora Avatar

it’s confusing that the violett lipstick is named Heroine. a year ago there was already a bronze lipstick in the wonder woman collection called Heroine. did they run out of names? haha

amy Avatar

Well, I guess when they put one Limited Edition Collection out one after another, they can’t keep track of their own products. In this case, though, I think they were trying to go for a name to fit the theme.

Allie Avatar

Would you say Heroine is different enough from Violetta to justify having both? (Please say yes LOL). 😛 My wallet is going to hate me, because I’m lemming all of these atm.

Shane Avatar

Omg yes! After seeing the Reel Sexy on you Im convinced to try it on myself! Ive been in search of a perfect, light coral for summer and this seems to fit the bill! Think it’ll match my pale, pink undertoned skin?

Raquel Avatar

heroine looks very much like violetta i agree, and although their resemblance i think it’s a good chance to get it if you missed the violetta edition!!

but it also reminds me of goes and goes, despite beeing more grey or toned down.

Christine Avatar

They look entirely different to me when you apply them – Budding Love is much more pastel and cool-toned, which is why I didn’t mention it earlier 🙁

fabiola Avatar

Loving reel sexy, heroine looks beautiful on you Christine. It was a heroine lipstick in wonder woman collection, but a different color, right? Christine, how would you compare pink popcorn with budding love from chen man? Thank you.

Christine Avatar

Yep, different color!

Budding Love appears totally different applied – in the swatch, it’s harder to tell, but it’s very pastel, blue-based, and creamy – compared to the frostier finish of Pink Popcorn.

LK Avatar

Christine, I own all these lipsticks.. PP and RS are true to color but Heroine looks lighter than mine, do you think it’s the picture, or is it same color in real life? I love yours, it looks amazing on you!

pLebiitah Avatar

I NEED Reel Sexy!!! I was hoping Pink Popcorn would be LAVENDER as they described it.. It’s Heroine similar to Revlon’s Berry Haute??

Keshia Avatar

After seeing this swatch for Heroine, I’m not too excited about it. I thought it would be an exclusive, different colour, however, it’s looks practically idential to Violetta. It’s a nice-to-have, but not a must-have in my opinion.

Pami Avatar

Oh I gasped at Heroine, then realized how close it is to Violetta which I already have.
I’m surprised at how soft and pretty Pink Popcorn looks. Bet it would look great layered over Heroine/Violetta. I think I’ll have to get it! 🙂

Nuria Avatar

I’m in love with Reel Sexy l/s 🙂 It’s very pretty and fresh! You looks so pretty Christine!

Congratulations for this awesome website xx

April Avatar

Hi Christine!
How do you think Reel Sexy would look on NW45ish skin? When do you think this would be available to purchase online? Do you think they are already selling at certain counters? Thanks for all your help 🙂

Christine Avatar

I think it could work, though it might not be the most flattering of that type of shades. They’re not supposed to release until April 5th, and MAC typically launches online the Tuesday before, but it can be any time they so desire, as they do not provide an online release date.

Sabrina Avatar

Oddly enough Watch me Simmer is still available on the UK MAC website! I am in no rush to buy it when it’s due to be repromoted anyway 🙂 How similar is Pink Popcorn to NARS Roman Holiday?

Lark Avatar

You have that glow again today! And Heroine II looks great on you, it’s a keeper. I’ve got Violetta and Simmer, so I’m passing but it’s a fantastic lipstick, purple works with other colors that red/ pink/ nude don’t quite carry…

Veronica Avatar

Heroine is gorgeous, but it looks enough like the copy of Violetta I own that I won’t be exceptionally upset if I miss out on it. Pink Popcorn is adorable, though! I think the other two may be a touch too orange for my skin tone, but they look very pretty. I especially like Watch Me Simmer on you.

sofie Avatar

OF COURSE just last week I bough MAC Gotta Dash and it’s so similar to Reel Sexy. Oh well, will probably still get it seeing as I love Gotta Dash! 🙂

Christine Avatar

Hi Abra,

I’m not sure what you mean – I don’t wash out my photos, LOL! I spend hours trying to get them as accurate as I can. I’m often at my computer with swatches on my hands and arms so I can compare it in person to the swatch on the screen. If you have any suggestions on how to improve my photography, please feel free to help! There’s even a video of me wearing Heroine – looks just like this! 🙂

Liz Avatar

Wow, I’m loving Heroine! and it really looks good on you. Whats the best lipgloss on top of it can you suggest? Hope you can help me, thanks,. =)

Angelo Avatar

I just ordered BOTH lipsticks I wanted Reel Sexy and Watch Me Simmer
my insomnia actually paid off because I scrolled on M.A.C in the limited edition lipsticks and they were available, sold out now, I finally got one of ‘those’ shades that sell out in seconds
I always wondered what it felt like to be in the select few of those who got that one shade online before it sold out, and I can say it feels like I just won the Olympics
if you’re on and looking for them go to Nordstroms because thats where I had to get Reel Sexy and they still have all of them in stock and free shipping everyday
thank you Christine for everything you put into this blog 🙂

maria Avatar

WOW!!! heroine and reel sexy are gorgeous. Heroine looks a lot like lancome rouge in love 381B violette coquette .i wish i could see them side by side before i buy heroine because i already have lancome.MAC is doing great and i am completely broke but loving it.

mumtaza Avatar

i ordered Heroine as soon as it went live on the website (thanks for letting us know by the way! I mean I ordered it when it was still buried in the random lipstick section.) It arrived a couple of days ago, but I was afraid to open it and find out it didn’t look good. Besides the Bloggers collection, this is the first time I ordered something online from MAC without seeing it first. Anyway, I just now finally tried it on and I love it!!! Way to go Christine! Great, reliable swatches once again. Thank you.

S Avatar

Hey Christine, love the colour Reel Sexy l/s but in terms of formula/texture, would you recommend it over Illamasqua Brink? Not keen on the settling into lip lines bit.

Thanks for the swatches!
