MAC Rebel Lipstick Nail Lacquer, Lipglass
MAC Rebel Lipglass, Lipstick, Nail Lacquer
MAC Rebel Lipstick ($14.50 for 0.10 oz.) has been such a top-seller that it has now inspired a Lipglass ($14.50 for 0.17 fl. oz.) and Nail Lacquer ($16.00 for 0.34 fl. oz.) to complement it. This shade is part of the North America and Europe/Africa regions of the collection, so it will only be available both online and in-stores. Rebel is described as “mid-tone cream plum.”
The color of the lipgloss matches the lipstick extremely well; at worst, it’s slightly less red-toned, but it’s hard to tell. The only major difference that’s easy to see visually is in the opacity–the gloss is less opaque than the lipstick. Once again, however, the nail lacquer is not much of a match for the lipstick nor lipgloss. It’s much, much darker–it’s a very vampy shade. It looks more like Rebel does in the tube, but I’d still say it comes out darker. It doesn’t have enough red undertones to really match and complement the lip products. When you apply the lipgloss on top of the lipstick, the end result is a very even, semi-opaque berry-red with a glossy shine.
Rebel Lipglass is a berry-red with a little purple tint. It applies semi-opaque, but it doesn’t apply completely evenly; there are some splotches in the end result. If you were hoping for a MAC All My Purple Life dupe, this is definitely not it–it is very red and berry in comparison. Tom Ford Wet Violet is purpler, less red. Dolce & Gabbana Amethyst is redder, less berry. NARS Bougainville is just a little lighter and redder. MAC Ban This! is a bit redder. (9, 9, 9, 9, 4, 4; B+)
Rebel Lipstick is a berry-red with a slightly frosted sheen. The color coverage is mostly opaque, but there’s a little sheerness. It has a satin finish, and it is part of the permanent range. Guerlain Nuit d’Amour is a bit redder. It’s darker and more vibrant than Guerlain Bee but deeper than Dolce & Gabbana Orchid. YSL Forbidden Burgundy is lighter, redder. (9, 9, 9, 10, 4, 4; A-)
Rebel Nail Lacquer is a deep burgundy with a little purple tone to it. It was mostly opaque after two coats, but it was surprisingly less pigmented for such a dark shade. I also found it streaky on the first coat and a little streaky on the second coat. The formula was very thin. Dior Graphic Berry is a closer match, as it has stronger red undertones and isn’t as dark. Illamasqua Vice is lighter and redder. China Glaze Loft-y Ambitions is very similar but has shimmer. Rescue Beauty Lounge Bruised is lighter with redder tones. (8.5, 9, 8, 9, 3.5, 4; B)
MAC Lipsticks are vanilla-scented but taste-free. Satin finishes like Rebel typically wear four to six hours on me, and Rebel wears anywhere from five to six hours on me (sometimes longer) as it does stain. MAC Lipglasses are also vanilla-scented but taste-free. They are very sticky and have a thick, borderline-goopy consistency. If you prefer gel-like, cushion-y glosses that feel lightweight on, I don’t recommend MAC Lipglass. Because of the tackier texture, MAC Lipglasses do tend to wear a full four hours on me, with some of the darker shades lasting up to six hours (with mostly the color lingering at that point).
Note: I am reviewing each “set” together. After I’ve reviewed all sixteen sets, I will do round-ups for each product type (so all lipsticks together) to deliver an overall Glossover rating. This rating is more indicative of the product type, as the rating that follows this post is an average across three totally different types of products. You can also see the individual scores listed after each product, which are listed in the same order as they are in the Glossover.

For the most part they’ve got the nail polish colours spot on… a couple, heh not so much…
Oh so gorgeous! /faints
This is my absolute favourite vampy-lip-colour. I love how it is vampy but still glamorous and not too dark. The nail polish is a little bit darker than the lipstick and lipgloss but it’s still a lovely colour.
I have Rebel and dug it up to compare to how it looks on you. It’s much darker on me. I guess that means my lips are more pigmented? (Myth also looks much darker on me than on you). As for the nail varnish, imo it’s an EXACT match to Mac’s old Veruschka lipstick which, sadly, has been discontinued.
@Kafka Maybe more pigmented or different pigmentation. Like I have cool-toned lips with a little pink, so sometimes my lips will bring out any rosiness a lipstick might have.
This has to be one of the prettiest combos of lipstick and gloss – your lips look like juicy black cherries! BTW the first pic in these posts with the lips and nails looks so artistic!
@baby in a corner I hope those shots were worth it, LOL! I figured readers would want to see how close the polish to the gloss/lipstick was!
@Christine (Temptalia) I think its a great idea. That was the whole point of this release, after all.
this is really beautiful on you! rebel is a personal favourite, im pretty excited about this lipglass. 🙂
I was most interested in this set when I saw the product photos, but I’m not loving the swatches. I wish they were more true to color. So far, I’m only interested in Chestnut.
Love it! I’d love to get the lipglass to pair with some of my other lipsticks as well.
i want the nail polish only!
This color is gorgeous on you!
I walked out of Nordstrom’s with this today after I discovered they didn’t carry the shades I was looking for. 😀 I hadn’t realized Rebel was part of the new release collection, so I was pretty excited when I stumbled on it by accident.
woah, pretty!
How does the Rebel lipglass compare to MAC Indigo Pink lipglass from the Jeanius collection?!
Indigo Pink is purpler, not as red-toned. http://www.temptalia.com/mac-jeanius-lipglasses-swatches-photos-reviews
The Rebel lipstick looks different from what u posted in the Sultry season .
Very, very slightly? I looked at the two side-by-side, and they’re pretty close. Unfortunately, I am not a professional photographer so I can’t guarantee that every shot will be 100% the same. That post is 2 years old – I use different equipment and lighting now as well! I try my best!
I fell absolutely in LOVE with Rebel this past Fall (thanks to your review, Christine!) and this gloss looks fabulous. I can’t wait to grab it!
I love Rebel lipstick so much that I almost want to buy the gloss, but I never wear gloss. Must resist!
Is the gloss a sheer-er version of Scan Delicious?
nice work on the squillion swatches
Nah – Scan-delicious is much pinker!
I bought this lipstick last fall and I was so excited about it, but it just reads like rose lipstick on me, far less exciting. It’s such a beautiful colour *sigh*
best one yet !!!!!
The polish is such a match to the tube colors, in the context of the collection it makes the lip colors’ appearance when applied a little disappointing. It’s a nice color, compliments the polish, but differs like crazy!
Rebel is one of my favorite lipsticks! It stains and hence wears really long on me! I wish the nail color was as vibrant as the lip products, would have made such a gorgeous fall combo!
hello, looove rebel, someone say revlon do a dupe, cherry in the snow, which is the most old shade on revlon and lipstick talking.what do you think?
Wish the lip products were more like the nail laquer!
Rebel is one of my Mac favs.
I need this color in my life. I can’t believe I’ve never seen it before.
You look GORGEOUS in this combo! My WORD! I hope you keep this lip in rotation.
i got a chance to test lipgloss and lipstick. Lipgloss is truly sticky and I find it not pleasant, lipstick though really stays on lips and looks fabulous! i tried it also on my hand and had problems with cleaning it with tissue! it really stains. so- i recommend lipstick!
These are just my colors and that’s all there is to it. Must. Have. If the lipglass zigs, I’ll zag. I’m willing to work with it.
Your eyeshadow looks beautiful. I’m pretty sure it’s the Tarina Tarantino Emerald E/S palette. Such a great look on you I’m tempted to buy it just to see if it will look that fabulous on me!
As always, thank you for all your hard work, Christine.
I had to give this lipstick a shot when I saw these swatches! I’m ridiculously pale and so have always been hesitant to give purple a go, but trying it in-store won me over and I ended up bringing it home.
After playing around with it for a bit, I really am surprised by the versatility of this color. Because it’s got both the purple and the red tones to it, I find it changes dramatically depending on what gloss you layer over top of it and I’ve actually had problems finding a shade that doesn’t look great layered over it. So far, I’ve found that a redder gloss turns it to a dark cherry color, while a purpler one makes the plum really pop. A pale pink gloss doesn’t really interfere with the colours but adds a layer of pastel, so the original color is still visible but appears toned down enough that I’d feel comfortable wearing it during the day. For fun, I tried putting an orange-tinted gloss over it, and ended up with a stunning shade of fuchsia. I’m still confused about how that happened!
Maybe I’m defeating the point of the matching lipgloss sets, but I felt the need to share!
Im sorry im so late! But is this anything like Jampacked lipglass from the Cult of Cherry Collection?
@petlewin Purpler, less vampy.
Can I just say that Dandy Lion looks great on you? It really brings out the colour of your eyes!
