MAC Quite the Standout Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick
MAC Quite the Standout Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick ($20.00 for 0.17 fl. oz.) is described as a “bright orange-red.” It’s a bright, medium orange with warm, red undertones and a matte finish. It was intensely pigmented with a slightly thin consistency that applied with smooth, even color and no visible streaking (once it dried down). This was one of the better shades in the range, as it had the very matte finish but didn’t make lips look dry. It lasted for seven hours but was somewhat drying. ColourPop I Ain't Bad Atcha (LE, $7.00) is lighter (95% similar). Sephora Mandarin Muse (PiP, $14.00) is lighter (95% similar). Shiseido Fire Topaz (OR417) (DC, $28.00) is lighter (95% similar). MAC Rich & Restless Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick ($20.00 for 0.17 fl. oz.) is described as a “mid-tone pinky salmon.” It’s a light-medium, orange-coral with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had excellent pigmentation with a really even, smooth application. It “cracked” just slightly as I smiled, but it wasn’t too noticeable. On me, the color wore for six hours, though it tended to fade more from the center. It was moderately drying. MAC Tropic Tonic (P, $19.00) is cooler, glossier (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Dashing (P, $55.00) is lighter, glossier (90% similar). ColourPop Jacquard (P, $7.00) is darker, glossier (90% similar). FORMULA OVERVIEW | MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick ($20.00 for 0.17 fl. oz.) is pigmented, liquid lipstick formula that dries down to a flat, matte finish that is mostly transfer-proof. They have a runnier mousse-like consistency; it is not quite mousse-like in thickness, but it is not as runny as some liquid lipstick formulas–somewhere in-between there. The formula of these is thicker than their Pro Longwear Lustre Lipcolours (which is like the OG of matte liquid lipstick to me). The lighter shades are the least forgiving and most of them “crack” as soon as they dry down and I move my lips or smile. They don’t flake off in chunks, and most of them fade relatively evenly. I get slight transfer on occasion when drinking anything more than water (e.g. latte), and while a lot of the color will make it through a meal, it will vary depending on the oil-content of your meal. They do respond well to layering or touch-ups after there is an initial layer done. They dry down within thirty seconds to two minutes (darker shades took longer to dry), and I was able to manipulate the color as it was drying down without lifting the color entirely. Some shades appeared streaky during initial application, but once it dried down, most of the streaks disappeared (kind of like nail polish can self-level). I found the formula moderately drying after three to six hours of wear, and it is one of the more drying formulas I’ve tried, personally. They are vanilla-scented but have no discernible taste.

The first one is too bright for me, but like the second one more. BTW, love your eye look!! I have that Laura Gellers palette, and I’m going to try to copy that look
Thank you, Katherine! 🙂
Would you say this formula is drier than the ColourPop ones? I personally find the CP ones very drying – great staying power + colours for the price by all means – but drying. I’m wondering if these MAC ones are more/less so?
CP is less drying for me for most shades, but the very drying ones from CP are worse. CP has more variance for how drying they are (for me).
Rich & Restless is SUCH a pretty shade! They should really do a cream or glossy version of this 🙂 Quite The Standout looks fierce on you.
That would be cool!
These both look more like it, when it comes to how liquid matte lipsticks *should* look and behave in practice! Love these colors, too. However, having Lady Danger, Morange, Make Me Gorgeous and Vegas Volt in my lipstick arsenal, I don’t really think I *need* these, but who knows??
Haha! You do have quite a few similar shades 😉
Wow. I could never pull it off but that is one gorgeous shade of orange. Quite the Standout, indeed!
It is a bright one!
Both are stunning on you. But, your eye look is taking the stage for me! Christine, after trying more of these, do you still stand by KVD as the lesser drying liquid lipstick? If so, is it substantial?
KVD is definitely less drying. These are not quite as drying as Anastasia for me, but it’s a formula I can only wear every other day (and that is pushing it).
Okay,thanks!
I like Lady Danger a lot, and I like Quite the Standout but I need the slighly darker colour that Lady Danger has, I can’t go too orangey as that looks strange on me. I think Rich & Restless looks a bit neon-y, I don’t think it would suit my skintone.
That said, these two look a lot better than the others you’ve reviewed.
Lady Danger is more comfortable, at least 🙂
I really love the Rich and Restless shade! But I also recently bought Tropic Tonic, so hmmm… I love shades like this tho, so I may get it at some point! Your eye makeup looks so good with these both!
Tough call! 😉
These look less painfully matte than some but not shades I can pull off!
lol! “Less painful” is good when it comes to liquid matte, though in any other finish, it would be bad news!
Quire the Standout has the perfect name! It’s so bold and bright. I love it! I’m loving your eyes too. That’s a beautiful look!
It was aptly named!
I loved the MAC Sushi kiss on me and I was sure about buying it, but Rich & Restless made me thinking… What do you think is it much more brighter? I would really like a coral lipstick for daytime wear.
They’re both pretty bright. If you have fairer skin, Rich & Restless may appear even bolder on you. If you are darker, I think Sushi Kiss will be brighter/more noticeable, because it is lighter.
