MAC The Matte Lip Lipsticks Reviews, Photos, Swatches (Part 2)

MAC The Matte Lip Lipsticks
MAC The Matte Lip Lipsticks

MAC Damn Glamorous Lipstick ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “bright pink red.” It’s a brightened, medium-dark red with pink undertones and a matte finish. It is lightly cool-toned but may look more obviously cool-toned if you have cool, pink undertones. It had fully opaque pigmentation, and the color went on evenly and smoothly. This shade was not quite as creamy as others in the launch, but it didn’t drag during application. It lasted for almost eight hours and left behind a stain, and it was a little drying for the last two or three hours. Kat Von D Hellbent (P, $21.00) is darker, less pink. Too Faced Melted Ruby (P, $21.00) is brighter, glossier. Chanel La Precieuse (317) (LE, $34.00) is similar. MAC Glam (DC, $16.00) is a smidgen brighter. MAC RiRi Woo (LE, $16.00) is darker, more matte. NARS Luxembourg (P, $25.00) is lighter. MAC Ronnie Red (LE, $16.00) is similar. MAC MAC Red (P, $16.00) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

MAC Fashion Revival Lipstick ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “deep raspberry.” It’s a dark, muted raspberry with a semi-matte finish. The color coverage was very nearly opaque (hint of my lip freckle coming through) with even color application. The consistency was lightly creamy, easy to apply, and lasted for almost seven hours. It was neither drying nor hydrating. Gucci Beauty Bitter Grape (P, $39.00) is more shimmery, sheerer. NARS Vera (P, $32.00) is brighter, redder. Marc Jacobs Beauty Cabaret (146) (LE, $30.00) is a touch lighter. Inglot #293 Lipstick Cream (P, $12.00) is much glossier. Illamasqua Shard (P, $24.00) is more matte. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

MAC Heroine Lipstick ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “vibrant violet.” It’s a bold, magenta purple with cool, pink undertones and a semi-matte finish. It has mostly full color coverage, is lightly creamy and applies evenly, while the wear is about six hours on me, plus a stain. This is part of the permanent range, so I’ve reviewed it previously, and I didn’t retest it this launch. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

MAC La Vie En Rouge Lipstick ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “bright orange coral.” It’s a brightened, medium-dark coral-red with warm undertones and a matte finish. It’s the kind of shade that’s so bright that it plays tricks on your eyes (stare at this for awhile, then stare at something neutral!). It had a lightly creamy consistency that wasn’t heavy, slightly clingy (but not in an uncomfortable way), and lasted for six and a half hours (probably wearable until about eight before you really needed to reapply). It was a little drying towards the end. Gucci Beauty Hibiscus Thrill (P, $39.00) is sheerer, lighter. NARS Kelly (P, $32.00) is lighter. NARS Grace (P, $32.00) is glossier. Chanel La Malicieuse (46) (P, $34.00) is lighter. Make Up For Ever #37 (P, $19.00) is a bit lighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

This collection is supposed to launch online on October 2nd and in-stores on October 9th for North America locations. I only have “October 2014” for international locations.

Pretty…though I’m disappointed with the semi-matte and satin descriptions across this line (not disappointed in you…you call it as you see it…but in MAC). What happened to the true mattes?
I love the first two of these four. Maybe. I’m still sort of ogling more of the Nars audacious line.

kjh Avatar

These all look marvelous on you! Glad this release is a hit, performing well, and permanent. At least, i think. hard to remember all the MAC stuff straight. and they haven’t dropped RHPS yet…been stalking.

kjh Avatar

and i had the nerve to try to do my JOB + missed the blush. i only didn’t check in about an hour. Frank isn’t there yet.. Strange j was, but it is #3 of my faves. as i cannot stalk a store, due to night job + day job fri, guess i’ll forget it. I’m far too old for more extra aggro from m/u. hardly want to drive an hour on Sat AM+ have the stuff all sold out Fri. Think permanent is more my speed, but i like that yellowy-orange from this release. (Isn’t one of the new MAC l/s releases perm? oh, forget it, i’ll look back in Temptalia… You always have everything documented so precisely.

I pass on MAC MATTE! Terrible formula.. Apparently not improved enough for me! Besides, fashion revolt is my lip color and I prefer MJB cabaret to dab over and smooth! How about just reviewing EVERY MJB lippie? I can make you a GOOD bribe… 😉

Lotus Avatar

Oh, I vote ONLY! 😀 Where did the big re-sale box of many lippies from MJB where the middle is Showstopper.. Donde esta? No estas vibe con Sephora…. Damn. Am I blind? If so, I can easily produce brain damage as a candid excuse… Gimme. Please? Muchas Gracias!! Que Linda!

GabiRM Avatar

Awesome colors! I already have heroine and love it! I thought fashion revival would be a dupe of rebel in color, do you think they are alike? Ok, now I’m definitely lost!Just don’t know which ones to get! haha

Gisele Avatar

Thank you! I was thinking about getting Damn Glamorous, but I’ve got Glam..
I may still get 5 lippies of this collection. Can you tell how I love matte lipsticks? 😀

Gisele Avatar

Not at all. But MAC provides a good range of color choices. My favorite matte formula is the one from LimeCrime Velvetines.. but there are some things about this brand that I dislike, so I usually avoid them. 😉
What do you recommend? Is there any matte formula that you like the most?

(Sorry about my poor english. I hope I have made myself clear.. ;))

Shana Avatar

I want LVER and am debating on Fashion Revival…but I just spent the last two days stalking for RHPS so I don’t know how proactive I’m gonna’ be in trying to get a hold of these before they sell out lol.

Did you get the blushes from this collection?

Zita Avatar

Thats wierd,in the pink pro lipstick palette I own it looks totally different!
Tomorrow I will go to Mac and I will compare these and let you know.
By the way NYX Fig is an incredible color and has a very nice texture, you should check it out! 🙂

Julie B. Avatar

hi, christine!
lovely swatches, as usual!
i really hope i’ll be able to get some of them.
question: how do you think fashion revival and rebel compare?
thanks a lot!
juliana

Julie B. Avatar

just thinking if i REALLY need it or if i’ll be fine with rebel/magnetism/splurge (seems i already know the answer, but…).
again: thanks a lot for all these swatches and reviews, they’re REALLY REALLY helpful.

Dianna Avatar

Christine,
How do you feel about Fashion Revival, would it be considered a dupe for MAC Rebel? I understand that they’re both different finishes, and I already currently own & love Rebel. I’m debating whether or not to even purchase Fashion Revival, but it’s such a lovely color!

Veronica Avatar

They look very nice! I guess they’ve done some improvement on the formula. Though I have to say, it’s really bizarre that they would name a coral shade “Life in Red.” o_0

Rachel R. Avatar

La Vie En Rouge just might. The more I see it, the more I like it. I really like Heroine, but I have and like Kat von D L.U.V. I’m not sure if Heroine is enough different to justify buying it.

Nikki Avatar

I love every color here. Fashion Revival is calling out to me in particular, but it reminds me of Illamasqua Magnetism (albeit a smidgen purpler and matte). I always want colors that look like what’s already in my stash! lol. Might pick up La Vie en Rouge when it hits counters. 🙂

Dee D Avatar

Ooh La Vie en Rouge is pretty different! Not a big fan of mattes in general but these look super pretty ..probably because theyre not “suck the life out of your lips “matte ! On a related note though..Grape in your Dupes list for Heroine looks SO pretty..I have eyes on that one now!!

Aquie Avatar

All amazing and pretty colors but I’m so done with MAC after this fiasco with the Rocky Horror Launch…I’m like planning on never to give them my money again…Now people are selling the lipsticks at $50 – $150 a pop on Ebay…Worst launch and customer service I have ever dealt with…

Iliana Avatar

Oh goodness. I wasn’t sure if I wanted all of them but my goodness you convinced me to buy them all. La vie en rouge and damn glamoures are very similar. Are they worth getting both or am I better off picking one?

Jahzara Avatar

Thank you for the swatches, Christine! All these colors are so pretty on you.
I will be buying Damn glamorous, La Vie en rouge, and Fashion revival.
I already have Heroine 🙂

Lotus Avatar

Can you please explain the first pair of lips with lipstick on versus the second pair of lips, directly underneath, with lipstick on? Thanks! 🙂

PASS 🙂

Sylirael Avatar

All four of these are beautiful, actually, but my favourite here is definitely Fashion revival! 😀 Why do so many of these awesome MJ Cabaret-like shades have to be LE and/or restricted in some way! *shakes fist at sky* 😉

These don’t actually look matte, as you note, although I wouldn’t personally compain as dead matte lipsticks look…difficult on me, LOL!

Areej Avatar

Hi! First time commenter, thank you for your hard work and for getting this up rapidly! I’m glad this collection got a full review from you instead of the quickies. Also, can someone explain why this collection isn’t advertised on the mac site? Atleast the Canadian one. Does mac only show them once they’ve released?
Anyway, I think I’ll pass on these purely because of colour preference, but getting most from your part 1, thanks Christine!

Areej Avatar

Sorry, should have asked this with the previous but how does La vie en rouge compare with party parrot? It’s the one that got away for my sis lol

Sheree Avatar

Thanks! I just got damn glamorous and la vie en rogue.. Excited! This was my first time stalking MAC to get a limited edition release lol

indayluvs Avatar

I think they may have originally planned to release a new shade instead of Heroine. From the release page for this collection on their web site (quotations are mine): “Vibrant hues like fuchsia Velvet Violet and La Vie En Rouge are a bold contrast to the rich burgundy of Fashion Revival and nude of Styled in Sepia.” I haven’t seen any mention of a Velvet Violet anywhere else, but it sounds VERY intriguing!

Trina Avatar

I know you have so much stuff to review do you think you can just do a sneak peek of the rest of the collection? Just so we can see the colors of the lip pencils & blushes. I’m hoping either absolutely it or fashion boost will work for heroine, violetta, & up the amp.
Thanks

kerthi Avatar

Christine,

The shades are now available in Malaysia :D, i got my hands on Fashion Revival and La Vie En Rouge. I want to get next Damn Glamorous and the peach shade. I am so in loveeeeeee with Fashion Revival. I dun have such a colour in my collection. i think i might go and get myself another 1 just as a back up 😛

Thank u for the reviews.

I ended up purchasing Fashion Revival and Damn Glamourous. Those two have been on my list since I saw the press releas
