MAC Versicolour Lip Stain ($24.00 for 0.28 fl. oz.) is supposed to be a hybrid gloss and stain formula with a glossy shine, long-wear (eight-hours, specifically), “jelly-like texture,” and “stay-true colour.” Interesting discovery: under “usage” (on MAC’s website) the following is there: “As with many lips stains, lips might feel slightly dry over time … Product not recommended for use on overly dry or sensitive lips.” There is some good, specific information about these, though for color payoff isn’t as clear, so based on the fact that these are a gloss/lip stain hybrid (neither of which are typically opaque), I would expect noticeable color with translucency–like stained glass. The majority are fairly pigmented and are true-to-form as a lip stain, and they have a moderate shine. The consistency is thin, watery initially and develops into a slightly thicker, lightly tacky texture as it “sets.” It is one of the least-tacky textures of this type of formula (as it is similar to ones like YSL Glossy Stains, Giorgio Armani Ecstasy Lacquer, Tom Ford Patent Finish, L’Oreal Color Caresse). Some shades emphasized and gathered into lip lines, which may be due to the slightly thinner overall consistency (compared to other like formulas). The wear ranged from six to eight hours and was lightly to moderately drying over time. The formula has a subtle vanilla scent but no discernible taste.

MAC Long Live the Night Versicolour Lip Stain ($24.00 for 0.28 fl. oz.) is described as a “pale warm nude.” It appears as a light-medium peach with warm, orange undertones just out of the tube, but applied, it developed into a semi-sheer, darkened peach (it appeared darker and warmer, more orange than peach). I expect this one to look different from person to person (more so than the typical lip color). The texture was smooth, lightweight, and thin overall. It lasted for six hours and was lightly drying over time. MAC Happiness (LE, $22.00) is cooler (85% similar). MAC Can't Stop, Won't Stop (P, $24.00) is darker, more pigmented (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

MAC Always and Forever Versicolour Lip Stain ($24.00 for 0.28 fl. oz.) is described as a “pink salmon.” It’s a bright, light-medium tangerine orange with warm, yellow tones and a creamy finish from the tube, and it darkened into a medium, reddish-orange after five minutes on the lips. The texture was thin, lightweight, but some of the color settled into lip lines (particularly the bottom lip for me). The color lasted for six and a half hours and was somewhat drying towards the end of wear. Urban Decay Punch Drunk (DC, $26.00) is warmer (90% similar). Dior 999 (P, $35.00) is darker (90% similar). MAC Berry Bold (LE, $20.00) is brighter, cooler (90% similar). NARS Eternal Red (P, $26.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Sephora Poppy Field (33) (P, $12.00) is more pigmented, cooler (90% similar). NARS Scandal (P, $26.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Shiseido Lust (RD305) (P, $25.00) is brighter, glossier (85% similar). NYX Orangesicle (P, $5.99) is lighter, brighter, warmer (85% similar). Revlon HD Fire Opal (560) (DC, $8.99) is darker, brighter, more pigmented (85% similar). ColourPop Secret Weapon (DC, $10.00) is more muted, cooler, glossier (80% similar). Giorgio Armani #402 Red to Go (P, $38.00) is darker, brighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

MAC Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop Versicolour Lip Stain ($24.00 for 0.28 fl. oz.) is described as an “intense warm orange.” It appears as a bright, medium orange with warm, reddish undertones, and then it sets to a medium, reddish-orange with a creamy, glossy finish. It was nearly opaque with very subtle translucency. The texture seemed a little thicker, as well, and it spread across the lips easily. On me, the color wore for eight hours and was slightly drying. Illamasqua Temper (P, $22.00) is brighter (95% similar). Urban Decay Punch Drunk (DC, $26.00) is more muted (95% similar). Giorgio Armani Tangerine (300) (P, $38.00) is darker (95% similar). MAC Push Some Buttons (LE, $20.00) is darker (90% similar). MAC Flash Drive (LE, $20.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). MAC Berry Bold (LE, $20.00) is lighter, less pigmented, cooler (85% similar). MAC Laundry List (LE, $21.00) is lighter (85% similar). Chanel Energie (P, $34.00) is cooler (85% similar). Cle de Peau Deco (16) (P, $48.00) is lighter, more muted (80% similar). MAC Long Live the Night (P, $24.00) is lighter, less pigmented (80% similar). NYX Orangesicle (P, $5.99) is lighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Oooh, I like Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop! What a great orange color for summer, don’t think I have any dupes in my stash. Did it leave a stain behind?

These 3 are looking pretty pigmented for lipgloss/stain I would say. The fact that they’re somewhat drying makes them a pass for me though. I have very dry lips to start with and I just can’t use anything drying or it’s a disaster. That’s why I have to avoid the original YSL Glossy Stain formula.

Sadly these are too drying for me as our other stains I’ve tried such as YSL and Revlon. Too bad because the stain left behind on the one I tried long distance relationship was beautiful and I like the glossy feeling. Oh well, at least I got to save a lot of money!

The packaging of these is so weird… they almost look like counterfeits, haha. I’m actually really digging the Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop shade and may have to take a look at these since they’re not as gummy bear-esque as the L’Oreal Caresse stains.

Oh yeah, these are right down my alley! Love color, hate matte dryness & …well, matte-ness lol
The whole “satin/velour” lip color thing is an idea that I love, but it seems so difficult to pull off (formula wise). I did try a Laura Mercier Velour Lover’s Lip lipstick & loved the finish on that one, but don’t like the traditional lipstick “bullets”. This type with wands are more my style.
Ty for reviewing so quickly, Christine! I just received an email about these on Monday or Friday, so you rule!

Most definitely! I actually can’t wait to try it, but I’m holding out until after imatsny only bc I’ve saved money specifically for imats, plus it’s my 1st year going so idk what to expect! But I’m super excited lol! 😀

I tend to like a bit of translucency in most colors and like the first two colors for me.
The third was much to orange for me but all looked good on you, Christine.
Again the drying factor makes it a no for me.
