MAC Berry Black Friday Patentpolish Lip Pencil ($20.00 for 0.08 oz.) is described as a “blackened plum.” It’s a muted, medium-dark purple berry with cool undertones and a natural shine. NARS Damage (P, $28.00) is warmer (95% similar). Pat McGrath Astral Flash Dance (P, $30.00) is more shimmery (85% similar). MAC Plum Bright (LE, $19.00) is more pigmented (85% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Liam (DC, $36.00) is more pigmented (85% similar). MAC Boyfriend Stealer (LE, $19.00) is darker (85% similar). Urban Decay Apocalypse (P, $19.00) is darker, more pigmented (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

This is a limited edition, online-only shade available on November 27th (Black Friday here in the U.S.). The Patentpolish Lip Pencil is supposed to be a semi-sheer, glossy, hydrating formula. The pencil has a lightweight, thinner balm-like feel when applied to the lips, and it gets smoother as it melts against the warmth of the lips. It had semi-sheer coverage; enough to give a noticeable tint to the lips but not enough to cover entirely. It looked a little blotchy on me, and it had a tendency to emphasize lip lines by darkening them. This shade wore well for four hours and was lightly hydrating over time.

I happen to really like products like this (I love a subtle lip!) but I’m going to pass… I already have way too many Clinique Chubby Sticks and I think this is similar enough to Voluptuous Violet that I’ll hang onto my $20.

I don’t think it will sell out in seconds as it isn’t that unique. When MAC sold the black lipstick and then the grey lipstick the next year, they sold out in seconds because MAC fans NEEDED them in their collection. The smokey Black Friday palette last year was on their website well into January last year (probably because if you’re obsessed with makeup then you already have smokey colors) so you never know!

It looks pretty on you, but this looks more like tinted lip balm than “blackened plum”. I rather just buy Clinique Black Honey. BTW, love your eyes!!! Hope you will review the Charlotte Tilbury Nocturnal Eyes shadows soon –really want to see if they live up to expectations

I was hoping this would be a dupe for Black Honey, which is pretty but disappears in minutes on me. It looks like the wear time is much better than BH.

This is so pretty, but considering that it’s a MAC LE, I’m sure they will make about half what the demand will be and it will be sold out in about a quarter of a nanosecond after it goes up online. I can probably try to get one on eBay for $80, tho.

This is just a general comment/question. Am I the only one who is so fed up with all the “Black Friday” hysteria that I’m ready to boycott the whole thing? Here in Canada, it’s not quite as much a big deal but, as the US goes, so we go…. and retailers are having to compete so they’re glomming onto all of this. Almost everyone I know laments how much “too much stuff” they have and what a burden it is and how freeing a major declutter is (or how daunting) and yet retailers and etailers fan the flames of this consumerism with the Black Friday “if you don’t get it NOW, it will be GONE”. Well, I’ve reached the point where I say “Fine, let it be gone” and I’m really digging my heels in about this. Clinique has had Black Honey almost lipstick for decades and it will be around for decades more and there are so many other products similar to this lip product so I don’t see the need, to be honest. I’ll wait for an ordinary day if I feel the need for something like this!
