Kat Von D I Am Divine Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches

I Am Divine

Kat Von D I Am Divine Spring 2018 Eyeshadow Palette ($38.00 for 0.48 oz.) is a new, limited edition palette featuring eight eyeshadows with a mix of mattes and shimmers. It’s certainly a fun color scheme that isn’t something we’ve seen over and over again, but the execution of some of the shades here (like Hard Magic, the matte black, and Female Trouble, the matte white) was tragic.

Babs

Babs is a light gold with warm, yellow undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. The consistency was slightly drier, which resulted in looser sparkle lifting away from the base color in the form of fallout both during application as well as during wear. It had good pigmentation but only lasted seven hours on me.

Ingredients

Talc, Mica, Dimethicone, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Dimethiconol, Zinc Stearate, Silica, Caprylyl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Tin Oxide, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Hexylene Glycol, Diisostearyl Malate, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Isostearyl Alcohol, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Polyethylene Terephthalate, Malic Acid, Acrylates Copolymer, Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Benzoic Acid, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), Iron Oxides (Ci 77491, Ci 77492, Ci 77499), Yellow 5 Lake (Ci 19140), Aluminum Powder (Ci 77000).

Hard Magic

Hard Magic is a medium-dark black with neutral undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that was somewhat buildable, but it blended terribly–even over primer!–as it applied unevenly, refused to budge, and threatened to ruin any look I tried to incorporate it with. I ended up having to layer a shade like Baltimore over it to try to erase its impact the first time I attempted to use it. On its own, it wore well for six hours on me.

Ingredients

Zinc Stearate, Dimethicone, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Talc, Methicone, Caprylyl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Silica, Hexylene Glycol, Mica, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), Iron Oxides (Ci 77499).

Baltimore

Baltimore is a medium-dark blue with cool undertones and a frosted sheen. It had good pigmentation–almost opaque–that applied evenly and smoothly to bare skin. The consistency was soft, smooth, and blendable, which made it easy to work with. This shade stayed on well for eight hours on me.

Ingredients

Mica, Talc, Dimethicone, Zinc Stearate, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Dimethiconol, Silica, Caprylyl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Hexylene Glycol, Tin Oxide, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Diisostearyl Malate, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Isostearyl Alcohol, Polyethylene Terephthalate, Malic Acid, Acrylates Copolymer, Palmitic Acid, Benzoic Acid, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), Iron Oxides (Ci 77499), Ferric Ferrocyanide (Ci 77510), Bismuth Oxychloride (Ci 77163), Yellow 5 Lake (Ci 19140).

Waters

Waters is a light, sky blue with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff that was buildable, but the texture was somewhat powdery, almost chalky to my touch, and could have been easier to blend out. It wore well for seven hours on me before fading noticeably.

Ingredients

Talc, Mica, Magnesium Myristate, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Silica, Lauroyl Lysine, Caprylyl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Dimethicone, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Hexylene Glycol, Kaolin, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Methicone, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), Ultramarines (Ci 77007), Blue 1 Lake (Ci 42090), Iron Oxides (Ci 77492, Ci 77499), Bismuth Oxychloride (Ci 77163), Yellow 5 Lake (Ci 19140).

Filthy

Filthy is a medium gray with neutral undertones and a frosted sheen. It had good color coverage with a soft, lightly dusty consistency that had a bit of excess product kicked up in the pan but seemed to apply without issues. The color stayed on well for seven hours on me.

Ingredients

Mica, Dimethicone, Nylon-12, Talc, Boron Nitride, Dimethiconol, Zinc Stearate, Caprylyl Glycol, Lauroyl Lysine, Phenoxyethanol, Hexylene Glycol, Silica, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Polyethylene Terephthalate, Acrylates Copolymer, Tin Oxide, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), Ultramarines (Ci 77007), Chromium Hydroxide Green (Ci 77289), Iron Oxides (Ci 77491, Ci 77499).

Pink Flamingos

Pink Flamingos is a light-medium, chartreuse green (that leaned quite green) with a soft, frosted finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that applied fairly evenly, but the texture was a bit dusty and thin to work with, so it would be best over a primer or applied with a dampened brush. It wore well for seven and a half hours on me before fading noticeably.

Ingredients

Talc, Mica, Dimethicone, Dimethiconol, Zinc Stearate, Silica, Caprylyl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Tin Oxide, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Hexylene Glycol, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Diisostearyl Malate, Isostearyl Alcohol, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Polyethylene Terephthalate, Acrylates Copolymer, Malic Acid, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), Yellow 5 Lake (Ci 19140), Blue 1 Lake (Ci 42090), Bismuth Oxychloride (Ci 77163), Iron Oxides (Ci 77491).

Female Trouble

Female Trouble is a light white with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It was soft to the touch but rather powdery and very prone to sheering out, so I really had to pat and pack it on with multiple layers to get it to show well. I could not build it up well on its own, and it was only buildable to medium coverage over a primer. I also found it challenging to apply it precisely as there was a lot of fallout (even after tapping away excess off my brush) during application that would cause some shades to turn grayish. It lasted for six hours on me.

Ingredients

Talc, Mica, Zinc Stearate, Dimethicone, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Caprylyl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Silica, Hexylene Glycol, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Methicone, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), Bismuth Oxychloride (Ci 77163).

Hairspray

Hairspray is a light-medium, golden pewter with warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. The texture was drier and more loosely pressed, which resulted in a lot of the larger sparkles coming away from the base product. This excess product either got trapped in my brush or fell off my lid as I applied and blended out the eyeshadow. It had good pigmentation that stayed on well for seven and a half hours, but there was some continued fallout as it wore.

Ingredients

Talc, Mica, Dimethicone, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Dimethiconol, Zinc Stearate, Silica, Caprylyl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Tin Oxide, Hexylene Glycol, Diisostearyl Malate, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Isostearyl Alcohol, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Polyethylene Terephthalate, Acrylates Copolymer, Palmitic Acid, Malic Acid, Benzoic Acid, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), Aluminum Powder (Ci 77000), Iron Oxides (Ci 77491, Ci 77499), Yellow 5 Lake (Ci 19140).

I’m a huge Divine fan, but this is not the collection to honor her with. I was already disappointed by the packaging and shade choices (I still don’t understand why a color called Pink Flamingos is neon green!) and your review of this palette and its poor pigmentation sealed the deal.

I hope a brand does right by Divine and releases a proper collection!

Glad I didn’t spring for this after all! I was really excited, but what actually turned me off first was getting an email from KVD’s site a few days after release with “SUPER-LIMITED! Kat Von D Divine Eyeshadow Palette” as the headline. And the FOMO implied by that isn’t even realistic, since this still hasn’t sold out.

But now I’m extra glad I was turned off by that, because looks like sadly it didn’t measure up anyway.

I’m not expecting it to sell out just by virtue of it being such a cool-toned, bright palette that will turn a lot of people off, and was actually thinking of waiting until this (likely) hits the sale bin before picking it up. I’m not even sure I’m going to do that now though, because I can dupe most of this palette in my existing collection (and with better quality than that!).

Disappointing, but my wallet thanks me for sure!

I haven’t gotten a chance to try mine on my eyes yet; only swatched with a brush on bare skin. Female Trouble swatched really nice and pigmented for me. I wish Pink Flamingos were more opaque and vivid, as that was the shade I was most excited for. Hopefully, I’ll get to try out some eye looks nexts weeks.

I don’t like KVD but I have to admire the color selection here! Pity that some of them performed poorly, especially the dismal matte black and white–that confuses me because they’re core shades, so if anything, I would expect them to do better than the rest! But it’s nice to see a cool tone palette for once, with really no “warm” shades. Even the gold is a cooler yellow and works with the blues and greens well. Hopefully, some other brands will start putting out similarly-toned palettes for spring and summer!

I love the spirit of this but they aren’t colors I would reach for, regardless of performance. Wish it was better quality for those who are itching for those cool toned palettes.

With the exception of Hairspray (which has a pretty dismal rating), these are SO NOT my colours. It reminds me of some of the cheap and ugly makeup that was around in the 60’s (and I apologize to those who like this palette but I’m older than many here and remember what it was like trying to find “youthful” makeup back then when it was all Liz Taylor and Gabor sisters inspired stuff!)

I love that it’s cool toned and I live near Baltimore and would love to own this for those 2 reasons but the quality is such a disappointment. Hopefully this is a sign that companies are finally going to put the warm tones away and give us the cool tones we desperately need.

Whew!! So glad I waited for your review before purchase! Money saved.
What is going on with her and her brand lately? Is she pulling a Tom Ford and investing all her energy into other ventures? Her brand has really fallen off in the last year!

Oh dear. Tragic is right. If this palette had been formulated better, it would have been a super fun one for spring and summer. Instead, it’s like watching a terrible car wreck in slo-mo.

That’s pretty disappointing, I was considering buying this because I haven’t bought any bright colors in a while and KVD eyeshadow palettes are usually pretty good. Also I wonder what happened with the black shadow- the black in the Shade and Light palette has an excellent formula and is extremely dark and pigmented.

I’m so glad you reviewed this. These colors are way outside my comfort zone yet I found them oddly appealing. Thought it might be a fun wildcard to play with. My wallet thanks you!

Well, here’s the cool toned palette everyone was asking for. Shame it isn’t up to par 🙁

Hopefully someone else can do better soon, because that is beyond disappointing.

This isn’t the cool-toned palette **I** was asking for! While I hope more companies put out cool tones instead of the same warm neutrals over and over, this one is hideous. I wouldn’t touch any of the colors, and that includes the black and the white.

OK, well… like I said, I hope another brand will do better with cool tones soon and hopefully they’ll be more to your taste.

I personally am not a fan of really cool toned eyeshadows and these particular ones don’t appeal to me at all, but I’m less worried about the shade selection (because it’s not something I’d even consider purchasing anyway) and more disappointed by the formulation and performance, because the folks who do like these colours deserve better than this, I think.

It would be a real shame if companies put out sub-standard products that happened to be cooler themed and then went “People say they WANT cool tones, but they DON’T buy them!!!” and then stopped offering them, while conveniently ignoring the fact that customers just want cool toned eyeshadows that aren’t scoring F’s on basic colours.

I’ve also been dying for a neutral-to-cool palette but these aren’t the colors I’m personally coveting. I am praying for a palette with olives/golden olives, dirty golds/antique golds, taupes, pewter and various cooler toned greens. Absolutely no reds or oranges! I am envisioning a palette very similar to the gorgeous palette Christine came up with in her “Palettes I’d Like Colourpop to Release. I think it was called “The Woodlands” and it is stunning! This palette in no way did it for me even with a perfect score I would have still hated it. . That matte blue…ick!

Me too! I agree 100% with everything you said. Plus totally the palettes Christine envisioned were divine! I am convinced we will see them come to life someday.

Yep, a pretty average palette from Kat Von D. Filthy and Hairspray were lovely shades, but the rest were generally poor. At least it’s a change from pinks/purples and reds.

Although these are shades that I wouldn’t use with my coloring, I absolutely love that this is so different than all the warm-toned palettes that keep coming out. I love KVD and I love that this palette has a Divine theme, but it’s disappointing that so many of these shades rated so poorly. 🙁

OMG Christine! Are they just sending you terrible product? My Divine is – well – divine! I don’t want to post a link without your permission (to my blog post on it)… even though your site says I can incorporate my site, it doesn’t recognize it. If I’m not stepping on toes let me know and I’ll post the link so you can see the difference. I’m REALLY stunned at the difference.

I ordered mine from KVD the day it came available and I love it! There must be quality control issues because my Divine is just that, divine. I’ve worn it 3 times already.

I think it’s getting a little troubling that there’s more and more variance with product lately. I feel like it started about a year ago and keeps happening. Over the past year you’ve reviewed so many products (that I wanted) that were much better than the ones I bought; there were quite a few Urban Decay ones. And then some, like this KVD, mine is much better. The mattes is mine were worse performers than the shimmers/metallic but they were buildable to opaque making it a great palette. I don’t think it’s particularly unique though.

Yes I am happy with the palatte also. But i haven’t used the black shade. Everything else in the palette is fun very Cleopatra type colors. I like it. Especially the green and sky blue on the lid.

Mine isn’t bad, either. Pink Flamingos isn’t as bright as I’d like, but my shades swatched beautifully (with a brush, on bare skin). I quite like the palette so far.

I was hoping that this would review well as it might be the closest thing to a cool toned palette we ever see but this is just not something I want to spend my money on and sorry that it so poorly represents Divine. Just sad.

When I heard that Kat Von D had stopped sending her products out in PR and that one of the reasons was her belief that she was getting dishonest reviews I had a feeling it had more to do with her declining quality. Especially when she said she was still sending product to creators who “inspire” her and it’s just that team of women she’s been working with and having at all of her parties.

I really wanted this palette for the Baltimore color. I wish she would release the colors as separate items so I can buy that one. Reading your review is going to save me some money. Hard pass.

I’m sorry to see what a lousy experience you had with this palette! Mine has been a pleasure, surprisingly. I’ve been able to use all the colors with no troubles and rather lovely results.

FWIW I don’t think Divine would be insulted by a “money grab”. Have you followed her career?

I know the palette didn’t score well but I’ve seen people do some really beautiful looks with it. It was those looks that got me interested in the palette, because this color scheme is usually not what I’d go for though I love the bright blue and green.
