Dior Black Night Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches
Black Night (089)
Dior Black Night (089) 5 Couleurs Couture Eyeshadow Palette ($65.00 for 0.24 oz.) is a new, limited edition eyeshadow palette featuring a very deep, dark color story. Two of the shades could have been easier to blend out above the crease area; they just lacked the base to really get blown out (though the matte black did that well), but they had the kind of texture that worked really well for over the lid area or for more defined placement. The eyeshadows were pigmented and long-wearing overall.

Black Night #1
Black Night #1 is a deep, cool-toned black base with finer, bluish-gray shimmer throughout. It had opaque color coverage in a single layer, which applied evenly to bare skin and blended out fairly well, but I wasn’t able to get a completely diffused edge due to the shimmer in it as that seemed to ensure the edge also looked more ragged than blown out.
The texture was soft, smooth, and slightly dense but had a touch of powderiness in the pan but no discernible fallout during application. It stayed on well for eight and a half hours before fading visibly.

Formula Overview
-
The formula is supposed to have a "creamy and comfortable texture" that is long-wearing and has "intense color" (or "high-pigment"). There are five finishes that can be found within various palettes: matte, satin, shimmer, metallic, highlighter, and glitter, though there aren't specific descriptions by finish, unfortunately.
There were a few shades that seemed more sparkly and were sheerer, more like layering shades, while the other finishes tended to be pigmented. In general, the texture was moderately dense with the matte shades being slightly thinner and a smidgen powdery in the pan compared to the satin, shimmer, and metallic shades.
Aside from those more sparkly shades, the formula was blendable, pigmented, easy to work with, and lasted an average of eight hours on me (without a primer).

Black Night #4
Black Night #4 is a faded, navy blue with cool undertones and a satiny sheen. It had nearly opaque color payoff paired with a soft, slightly denser texture that had a smidgen of powderiness in the pan.
The eyeshadow applied well to bare skin and diffused fairly well along the edges but could have been a touch more blendable. It stayed on nicely for eight and a half hours before fading noticeably.

LELimited Edition.
Black Night #5
Black Night #5 is a deep black with neutral undertones and a mostly matte finish. The consistency was smooth, slightly firm and dense but not to the point of being stiff, so there was no powderiness, which ensured greater precision and control when working with it.
This was especially helpful as it had intense pigmentation in a single layer. The eyeshadow lasted well for eight and a half hours before fading visibly.

The color story of this palette is like Tom Haverford in Parks & Rec explaining shades of black: “Obsidian, onyx, midnight, lost soul, rolling blackout, sleeping panther, and void by Armani”
I really appreciate this comment XD
As I may have said earlier, I struggle a bit with those red toned shades like
#3 but I am absolutely loving it and so drawn to it. I have the New Look palette and I’m glad to see that #3 in that is a good dupe (I’m loving it and getting used to it too) because as lovely as this palette looks, it’s not really a wise purchase for me.
This is what TF Badass should have been! I actually love its super smokey depths. I do have PML Blue Blood, Underworld and Sterling in my Decadence Mothership, plus many a black eyeshadow, so I probably don’t need this. Sure do WANT it, though!
Same!
Well then, this unexpectedly took my breath away. Don’t need it, don’t see how I can wear it, but boy do I want it!
You’ve summed up my feelings exactly!!!
It takes my breath away! The colors are WOW. Sadly, with my porcelain skin I could never wear it 😢
Is there a ‘look’ for us to see?
It seems to be a bit dark for me and except for maybe adding it to other shades, I don’t know how it will work. I don’t want to look like a raccoon, I am intrigued.
Sorry, both my lights exploded last week, so I wasn’t able to take photos when I was testing this palette.
This is really disappointing -both for you, Christine and for those of us who’d love to see the look you created with this mesmerizing palette.
Thank you for letting us know.
I am considering this palette since I have nothing like it. And it is unique for the holidays.
I think this quint is way too dark, instead of two of the black shades, some more nuanced greys could have been included. The hero shade is that beautiful smoldering plum colour.
This palette is so interesting. I wish I could see an eye look with it. I’m sure your eyes are exhausted from all the applications you do.
Sorry, just saw you comment on the same issue.
This is an absolutely gorgeous palette, and while they are in no way dupes, there’s a lot of the color story that reminds me of the Melt Muerte palette. I wish there was a bit more depth and contrast between shades 1,4 and 5 though, perhaps a mid-tone grey, dark teal, or lighter blue? I think that would’ve given more variation.
Not something I’m going to pick up, but every look I’ve seen is absolutely stunning and I’m glad to see it’s good quality overall.
It sold out on Nordstrom just as I was looking at it. Hopefully it comes in stock again for those that want it.
It’s back, I just added it to my cart…
This is one of the nicer dior quints you’ve reviewed. I like how gothic it is 🙂
I’m loving this color story 💕It’s so mysterious and dark.
This is perfection, I so wish I looked good in black and dark eyeshadows.
If this year wasn’t a dry desert as far as finances go, I would have purchased this without a thought or regret. It’s gorgeous, it’s dramatic, and it’s well-rated.
