Zendo

Natasha Denona Zendo Mini Eyeshadow Palette ($25.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a new, permanent mini five-pan palette that features three shimmery eyeshadows and two mattes. Four of the five shades were really lovely; pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing, but one shade–Dazz–was oddly firm/stiff in the pan, almost thin and compacted into the pan, but seemed to soften after several layers were used (or in my case, I removed a few, too). That definitely isn’t the norm with the brand’s eyeshadow formula! It isn’t “back to normal” after that, but it was decent from there on.

Stark (335M)

Stark (335M) is a deep plum with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had rich color payoff in a single layer, which applied evenly to bare skin and blended out with ease. The texture was lightly creamy, dense but not thick or difficult to pick up with a dry brush. It lasted nicely for nine hours before fading a bit.

Formula Overview

$29.00/0.08 oz. - $362.50 Per Ounce

The majority of the brand's eyeshadows are quite pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing. The eyeshadows have improved over time, particularly with respect to longevity (without a primer). The original formula often creased on me within seven to eight hours, whereas the more current formula wears eight to nine hours with fading (instead of full-on creasing). The more matte finishes tend to be a bit more velvety, substantial, and less dry/powdery compared to prior iterations.

The metallic finish is often the creamiest, slightly denser in feel, but has excellent pigmentation, adhesion, and blendability. The sparkling shades can have some fallout, depending on how they're applied and how sparkly they are, so they sometimes work better with fingertips or a dampened brush; they can also run sheerer compared to other finishes.

Cream-Powders are the more unique formulation and tend to have firmer, almost stiff, consistencies and more semi-opaque, watercolor-esque coverage. They are longer-wearing, but they can take a few uses to learn how to use. This formula has also improved compared to when it first debuted--it is a bit more yielding now.

Bare (336CM)

Bare (336CM) is a medium pink with strong, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had mostly opaque pigmentation that could be built up to full coverage with a second layer. The texture was more velvety and substantial but had a touch of powderiness in the pan, so I would use a lighter hand with it to minimize excess kicked up in the pan. It wore well for eight and a half hours before fading visibly on me.

Stripped (337M)

Stripped (337M) is a darker, pewter gold with moderate, warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. The eyeshadow had a smooth, lightly creamy consistency that applied well to bare skin with a smooth, even lay down of opaque coverage in a single pass. The eyeshadow had an almost greenish tint in the pan at times, though it didn’t have a shift in practice–it was just like a “dirty” taupe and when I cross-referenced it, the shade fit in with pewters the best (which makes sense). This shade stayed on well for nine hours before fading a bit.

Dazz (339DC)

Dazz (338DC) is a light-medium coral with strong, warm golden shimmer throughout and a slightly pinker base. It was lighter and warmer than a lot of corals in this vein (ones with a lot of gold shimmer). The texture was firmer and stiffer, though, and I felt like I had to work through the first few layers to get something softer and more yielding. It had nearly opaque color coverage that adhered fairly evenly after I removed some of the pan’s surface. It lasted well for nine hours before fading noticeably.

Uncovered (338CM)

Uncovered (339CM) is a muted, medium copper with subtle, warm reddish undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had rich color payoff in a single layer, which applied well to bare skin as it went on evenly, diffused nicely along the edges, but it retained its color and coverage. The texture was soft, smooth, and velvety without being powdery. It wore beautifully for nine hours before fading slightly.

This might sound ridiculous, but this keeps reminding me of Pat McGrath’s Divine Rose (the launch that made me swear off the brand forever). Or maybe it’s what I wanted the palette to be? With a touch of Anastasia’s Modern Renaissance?

I’m tempted, but I’m also barely wearing any makeup nowadays (Zoom teaching!). Plus isn’t there a possibility of a larger palette? I shall sit on my hands and resist, because it’s gorgeous!
