Wine and Only

ColourPop Wine and Only 9-Pan Pressed Powder Palette ($14.00 for 0.36 oz.) is the newest release–and I think one of the last of the year–that includes a mix of shimmers and matte shades in a wine-inspired color story. The mattes were nicer than the shimmers, on the whole, though Grapeful has a ton of sparkle and not much that keeps it bound with the base, so that one had a lot of fallout. The shimmers were decent but did not perform as well as some past shimmers have from the brand.

For those keeping count, there are a few Pressed Pigments, which come with the warning that they are not intended for use around the immediate eye area under FDA regulations, though these types of pigments are approved for usage on the eye in areas like the EU.

Blanc

Blanc is a very light copper with moderate, warm undertones and a frosted finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation in a single layer, which was buildable to full coverage with a little more or if applied with a fingertip to begin with. The texture was soft, slightly drier but blendable with minimal fallout. It wore well for seven and a half hours before fading visibly.

Formula Overview

$4.50/0.05 oz. - $90.00 Per Ounce

The new Pressed Powder Shadow formula is supposed to be “highly pigmented” with an “ultra-velvety and silky” texture that is “long-wearing” and “adheres easily to the eyes.” Most of the shades have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation that applies well to bare skin, blends out without issue, and lasts for seven to eight hours.

The matte eyeshadows tend to be a little more powdery, though soft and finely-milled, in the pan, while the shimmers have a creamier, dense consistency. Occasionally, the more sparkly or metallic shades apply better with fingertips or a dampened brush.

Sip Sip

Sip Sip is a medium plum with strong, warm undertones paired with a lightly-sparkled matte finish. The texture was moderately powdery, though blendable, but it took its more semi-opaque coverage and sheered it out too quickly to medium coverage, so I’d recommend pairing it with a primer or where opacity isn’t necessary. It stayed on well for eight hours before showing signs of fading.

Major Chianti

Major Chianti is a muted, medium-dark reddish-berry with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. The texture was slightly firmer, stiffer in the pan, which made it easier to build up coverage if desired and kept it from having fallout, but it could have been more blendable. It had opaque pigmentation that lasted well for eight hours before fading visibly.

The new Pressed Powder Shadow formula is supposed to be “highly pigmented” with an “ultra-velvety and silky” texture that is “long-wearing." The way the Pressed Pigments differ is that they're not intended for usage on the immediate eye area.

The majority of the shades are semi-opaque to opaque in coverage, blend out fairly well, and can sometimes be a bit drier/more powdery compared to typical matte shades. They often wear eight to nine hours on me before fading, but many shades in the Pressed Pigment family leave some staining behind.

Cast a Chateau

Cast a Chateau is a medium-dark, reddish-copper with warmer, more orange undertones in its base and cooler, pink-red pearl that gave it a subtle, metallic sheen. It had opaque color coverage in a single pass, which adhered well to bare skin and blended out without difficulty. The texture was lightly emollient but not prone to sliding around. It wore nicely for eight hours before fading noticeably.

Play to Wine

Play to Wine is a medium-dark red with warmer undertones in its base and a mix of warmer red and copper sparkle throughout its more metallic finish. The consistency was thicker, denser, and creamier, so it applied better with a fingertip or a flat, synthetic brush and patted/pressed onto the lid as sweeping tended to result in fallout and slight unevenness in the initial laydown of product. It had opaque color coverage that stayed on well for eight hours before fading visibly.

Mull It Over

Mull It Over is a deep, pinky-red with cool undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had nearly full color coverage in a single layer, which readily built up to full coverage with less than a second layer. The texture was lightly powdery, though silky-smooth and blendable, with a tendency to stain the skin after wear. It lasted well for eight and a half hours before fading a bit.

Vinter

Vinter is a deep burgundy with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. The texture was balanced between being soft and blendable and firm enough not to be prone to fallout. It had rich pigmentation in a single pass, which applied evenly to bare skin and blended out without difficulty–though it was quite pigmented, so using a lighter hand is a good idea! It wore nicely for eight and a half hours before fading and did stain slightly.

Mon Sherry

Mon Sherry is a light-medium plum with strong, warm undertones and flecks of gold and plum shimmer throughout. It had rich color coverage that applied well to bare skin with a smooth, even lay down of product. The texture was lightly creamy without being overly dense or too thick, so it was easy to pick up with a dry brush. This shade showed signs of fading after eight hours of wear.

Grapeful

Grapeful is a medium-dark burgundy with strong, warm undertones and flecks of larger gold sparkle over a matte finish. The texture was moderately powdery, which made it prone to fallout to begin with, while the larger sparkles weren’t incorporated well with the base, so those also resulted in a lot of flyaway product and some additional fallout. It had opaque pigmentation that blended out well enough–so long as random sparkles in one’s look isn’t a deal-breaker–that lasted for eight hours before fading visibly.

Beautiful colors but I’m looking forward to when these red/burgundy types are not included in palettes anymore (although maybe it’s better for my wallet?) With pale skin like mine I look diseased with that color scheme!

Genevieve Avatar

I think this wine shade is quite prolific in lots of palettes, so I guess that those who really love this shade would welcome this offering from CP. Like most of their palettes, it’s not completely bad, has some really good mattes and I think it is the shimmers that let them down.
Mon Sherry is hero shade for me – quite an unusual colour.

Wednesday Avatar

I do like the mattes! I have looked at dupes, and I have multiple, but I find my dupes are either far cooler or far warmer .. these look very balanced to me in terms of temperature and that is what is appealing. Today I am wearing the dupe for Sip Sip—Sydney Grace Darcy—and Darcy saves so many eye looks for me because of it’s muted quality. If my eye look seems too cool, like today, I put a smidge of Darcy in my crease and it instantly balances out my look. I would love to pick this up, but I’m torn about CP and their endless stream of ho-hum and I have no need for the shimmers. But, yeah, I could definitely see myself making use of the mattes.

Christine Avatar

Just received this palette along with SS eyeshadows and SS cheeks and wine eyeliner. I’m wearing all of them now on my entire face. The palette seems very decent yet the rest of related items are gorgeous! Burgundy is one of my all time favorite colors- in addition to warm purples/violets, rose golds, and mauve. Glad I bought these this time prior to your review! I’ve made mistakes in the past with other CP products. Trying to avoid this nasty habit! 🙂 again thanks for the review right on Christmas Eve!
Keep it up, Christine!

Amanda Avatar

I bought this palette on a whim. I have a few wine colors, but I fell in love with the way ‘play to wine’ looked. I don’t have a metallic red. I have to say though, I loved using all the mattes. They blended easily.

A lot of people on social media hated this palette, but I wish they’d do more color-specific palettes like this, as in a deep dark blue palette, deep green, etc, than the typical kind with the bright mattes.
