ColourPop Be-dazzled & Guess Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks Reviews, Photos, Swatches
ColourPop Be-dazzled Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick
ColourPop Be-dazzled Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is described as a “deep true purple.” It’s a lightly brightened, medium purple with cool undertones and a vinyl-like sheen. It doesn’t dry down to a fully flat matte finish like a lot of the other shades have. It had mostly opaque pigmentation with a thin consistency that is a little harder to apply evenly. The formula feels clingier and really emphasizes the natural texture and lines on the lips in a way that makes them look somewhat shirveled–it’s not as soft or smooth as the average ColourPop liquid lipstick. I noticed the color flaking away from the center of the mouth after four hours of wear, and it was fairly drying over time, though most of the color lasted for six and a half hours. Fenty Beauty Violet Fury (P, $18.00) is cooler (90% similar). KVD Beauty Roxy (LE, $21.00) is lighter (85% similar). Makeup Geek Electric Slide (LE, $12.00) is darker, more muted (90% similar). KVD Beauty Roxy (P, $20.00) is more muted (90% similar). KVD Beauty Roxy (P, $19.00) is glossier (90% similar). Estee Lauder Shameless Violet (P, $32.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). MAC She-Rebel (LE, $20.00) is more shimmery, lighter (80% similar). Anastasia Violet (LE, $20.00) is more muted, cooler (85% similar). MAC Matte Royal (LE, $19.00) is darker, cooler (80% similar). Illamasqua ESP (P, $24.00) is more shimmery, lighter, warmer (80% similar). Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Belladonna (DC, $18.00) is lighter, warmer, glossier (80% similar). MAC 4Eva (P, $19.00) is lighter (80% similar). Illamasqua Kontrol (P, $24.00) is darker, more muted (80% similar). MAC Recollection (P, $21.00) is lighter, warmer, less glossy (80% similar). ColourPop Guess Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is described as a “dark blackened violet.” It’s a blackened purple with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation (one of the least pigmented shades I’ve encountered in the line-up!) that dries down to a mostly matte finish. Unfortunately, as it is a very dark color, that sheerness also came with unevenness. It wore for eight hours without flaking, and it was moderately drying after six and a half hours of wear. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Stud (DC, $17.00) is lighter, glossier (90% similar). Too Faced Melted Villain (P, $21.00) is darker, glossier (85% similar). Fenty Beauty Undefeated (P, $24.00) is lighter, brighter (85% similar). Bite Beauty Black Truffle (DC, $26.00) is darker, glossier (85% similar). MAC Which Witch (LE, $19.00) is warmer, glossier (85% similar). MAC Smoked Purple (P, $19.00) is warmer (85% similar). Maybelline Concrete Jungle (P, $7.49) is lighter, glossier (80% similar). Urban Decay Vanity (P, $18.00) is darker, brighter (80% similar). NARS Wild Night (P, $26.00) is warmer (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Formula Summary: ColourPop Ultra Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is a long-wearing, pigmented lipstick that starts off glossy and dries down quickly to that super flat matte finish. They have minimal transfer with some of the lighter shades having almost none for the first few hours of wear, but any time you’ve had a meal, they lose that transfer-resistant quality to a noticeable degree. They tend to wear anywhere from six to ten hours with darker shades maintaining better color coverage and wear over a longer period of time. Some shades get a little drying about two-thirds to three-fourths through the wear, while a few shades have been fairly non-drying even many hours into wear. They fade away evenly with most color loss occurring from the center of the lips if eating a more oil-based meal but the majority of color survives a meal. Reapplication has been hit or miss and tends to depend on how well it wore away and how easily the shade applies normally, but reapplication tends to emphasize the lip’s natural texture significantly compared to initial application and gives lips a very wrinkled, dried-up look. I’ve layered gloss on top of some shades with moderate success, though it will obviously lose the matte finish and will transfer and I’ll get tiny flakes where the matte lip color has lifted by mixing with gloss but has been pretty minimal. The formula had no discernible taste or scent.

Oh, Bedazzled is a beautiful purple, but I see what you mean about making lips look shriveled and dry. Nicole was dotting BITE Opal Lipstick on top of these matte liquid lipsticks to add some moisture–I bet it would also add a gorgeous violet opal sheen!
That could work well!
hey Katherine. That only works once they are ready to be at the end of the wear time as it does decrease the wear-just wanted to clarify that just in case someone was reading this and though they would buy one of these and it would solve the issues. I have only used Opal with the KVD liquids too. I’ll try it out when my CP order arrives (should be soon) and report back. 🙂
Thanks for clarifying Nicole, I forgot to add that in. Let me know how it goes! BTW, my empty lip gloss tubes came, so I should have a report soon on putting the OCC Lip Tars in there.
You pull off those super blackened colors so effortlessly. These news ones are permanent right?
They’re limited edition — it’s noted by “Limited Edition” in each Glossover!
What a coincidence! Bedazzled has been out of stock until probably yesterday or today because I have been stalking like mad for it. I just put it in my cart and thought, ” I’m going to see if Christine has reviewed it just in case’. It must be my lucky day and you save me $11. Such a shame it doesn’t work because it’s a super cool color. My tolerance for dry and shriveled lips is none.
I have Guess already on the way. I suppose I will give it a go maybe with a balm under it and a liner. But, if it doesn’t work, I won’t be too sad because these are lower cost. I think I’ll be sticking with the KVD version though from here.
Hopefully liner helps it out 🙂
I think this formula is too extreme. I love matte lips, I was wearing them before they were trendy, but I think when anything looks too extreme in a trend (like this texture, not the colour) we look back at our pics years later and think, “Why didn’t anyone tell me? Like those early 90’s Drew Barrymore brows that everyone did in my high school lol.
I like to think it’s more important to enjoy the moment, so if you rocked it and loved it at the time, then it’s all good 🙂
I think it all comes down to what you feel looks good! It seems everyone is into full brows & bright lips/cheeks these days, but I don’t like either on myself. I look back at my HS photos, where I have full brows & am wearing blush, but I don’t like them, LOL! I much prefer my thin brows, and once I discovered highlight/contour products back in 1991, I’ve been hooked. I’ve personally always liked a matte lip, but I just don’t care for liquid lipstick, but for other reasons.
They’re both so beautiful and unique! I’d totally wear these.
They are more unique 😀
Well, now I don’t feel so bad about missing out on Bedazzled. I really like the color, but the formula on that one looks yucky. I ordered Guess, and I love the color, but it looks like a lip pencil will be in order. I don’t mind that for a $6 item.
The formula on some of these is odd!
Ruby Kisses Matte Lipstick in Dark Plum Scene is quite similar to Guess in color, although it’s not a liquid formula. It is matte, though, and feels like “regular” lipstick when applied. Plus, it’s 1/2 the price-if you can find it in-store (I found mine in a random beauty supply store).
Thanks for the heads up!
Oh no!!! They dropped the ball with the two shades that I was most interested in! Why always the purples??? Be it eyeshadow, blush, or lip products, purple seems to be a total pain for companies to get it right! Aaarrrgh!!! ?
Always the purples 🙁
They seem to look so dry!
They were! 🙁
Pity some of these lipsticks cracks and flakes. I love bothe of these, but I don’t think they’d look good on my lips. Shriveled isn’t a good look for my lips 🙂
LOL! I don’t know that one ever wants to have shriveled lips as their go-to look!
I have to agree on Guess being sheer. LAX was another shade I have to work fast with to avoid the splotchy look.
I don’t mind missing out on Be-dazzled anymore though.
Some of these can be veryyy unforgiving if you don’t work quickly!
