Introduction to Dior

Introduction to Dior

I’m new to this brand. Where should I start?

A Few Notes | Dior frequently reformulates their products and discontinues older lines; as a result, I have found myself with very few lipstick shades to recommend that actually exist (a mental note has been made to consider to trying a few in the future). Most of their lip products have a floral/rose scent. They also are a brand that tends to have primarily limited edition blushes and highlighters with a limited permanent range (none that exist permanently now I have tried!).

They are famous for their Diorshow mascara options, while most of their liquid foundations have fairly favorable reviews to my knowledge, but I haven’t tried any of their current formulas in awhile. I am actually more curious to find out what Dior fans would recommend as so much of what I’ve tried from Dior in recent years has been limited edition (I try to only recommend currently-available products).

What would you recommend to someone just trying Dior for the first time?

Dior Blue Garden Eyeshadow Palette

Dior Blue Garden (031) Eyeshadow Palette
Dior Blue Garden (031) Eyeshadow Palette

Dior Blue Garden (031) Eyeshadow Palette ($63.00 for 0.15 oz.) is a mix of white, silver, gray, blue, and orange. The orange is an interesting addition (certainly makes it more unique), but whether that’s a good addition or not is quite subjective. I couldn’t find anything online that described this as a wet/dry formula, but it felt like that to me, so I did swatch it both dry (left) and damp (right) for your viewing pleasure. The ratings are based solely on performance dry, though, which was disappointing across the board.

Blue Garden #1 is a light-medium, peachy-orange with warm undertones and a frosted, metallic finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff dry with a lightly dusty consistency that made it harder to build up as it would just sheer/fade as I blended it. This shade wore well for seven and a half hours. Viseart Pont des Arts (P, ) is darker (95% similar). Disney by Sephora Splendid (LE, ) is darker (95% similar). Make Up For Ever I520 Pinky Sand (DC, $21.00) is warmer (95% similar). Chanel Tisse Ombre de Lune #3 (P, ) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Too Faced XOXO (P, ) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Tarte Rose Champagne (LE, ) is warmer (90% similar). Clarins Nude #1 (P, ) is cooler (90% similar). Charlotte Tilbury The Dolce Vita #1 (P, ) is warmer (90% similar). Kevyn Aucoin Peach (LE, ) is less shimmery, cooler (90% similar). NARS Valhalla (P, $25.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Sephora #happydays (P, $10.00) is lighter (85% similar). NARS St-Paul-de-Vence (Left) (LE, $25.00) is darker (80% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Blue Garden #2 is a bright, cool-toned white with a frosted sheen. It had sheer coverage when applied dry, though damp application seemed to go a long way with this one (almost opaque). The texture was powdery and hard to apply evenly to the skin. It wore well for six hours. Disney by Sephora Midnight Hour #1 (LE, ) is warmer (95% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Ice Queen #1 (P, ) is warmer (95% similar). Buxom Velvet Snow (LE, $12.00) is more muted (95% similar). Guerlain Les Nuees #2 (LE, ) is warmer (95% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Blue Garden #3 is a muted, light bluish-white with a frosted finish. It had sheer pigmentation applied dry, so it was again, a shade that you’d have to use damp or with a good base (I’d reach for something thicker than regular primer). It had a dusty, thin texture that was prone to sheering out. The color was faded by the sixth hour of wear. Make Up For Ever ME202 Iceberg Blue (P, $17.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Bobbi Brown Iced Blue (LE, $22.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). MAC Dark Energy #2 (LE, $21.00) is more shimmery, lighter (95% similar). Too Faced Joy (LE, $16.00) is warmer (90% similar). Sephora Hologram (LE, ) is lighter (90% similar). Sephora + Pantone Universe Citadel (LE, ) is darker (85% similar). Maybelline Hydrangea Hype (135) (LE, $6.99) is darker (85% similar). BH Cosmetics Foil Eyes 2 #22 (P, ) is more shimmery, darker (85% similar). MAC Water & Ice #1 (P, $21.00) is darker (85% similar). Viseart Blue Diamond (P, ) is darker, brighter, cooler (85% similar). Sephora Sweet Dreams (17) (P, $10.00) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Blue Garden #4 is a light-medium, silvery gray with warmer undertones and a metallic sheen. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a lightly dusty/dry texture that was hard to apply over bare skin. The color wore for six and a half hours on me. Chanel Tisse Ombre de Lune #2 (P, ) is lighter (95% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty In Doubt (P, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). Smashbox Rock Icon (P, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). Chanel Mysterio (102) (P, $32.00) is warmer (90% similar). Colour Pop Liberty (P, $5.00) is warmer (90% similar). Coloured Raine Diamond Jubilee (LE, $6.99) is more shimmery (90% similar). BH Cosmetics Foil Eyes 2 #17 (P, ) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Blue Garden #5 is a medium-dark gray with cool undertones and a frosted sheen. It had decent pigmentation with a lightly dusty consistency that was blendable but easily sheered out on the skin (harder to retain intensity). It started to fade after six and a half hours of wear. Natasha Denona Quick Silver (09M) (P, $29.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Sleek MakeUP Acid #11 (P, $9.99) is less shimmery, warmer (95% similar). Kat Von D Piaf (LE, ) is darker (95% similar). The DiorBlush formula is supposed to be a pigmented and blendable powder blush. The texture, while blendable on the skin, was powdery and looked somewhat powdery/dry against my skin (normal at the moment). It had semi-sheer to semi-opaque, buildable coverage. There seemed to be the slightest bit of shimmer in the product, but it read as a traditional matte finish applied. On me, the blush started to fade after six and a half hours of wear.

Dior Rose Garden (451) Eyeshadow Palette

Dior Rose Garden (451) Eyeshadow Palette
Dior Rose Garden (451) Eyeshadow Palette

Dior Rose Garden (451) Eyeshadow Palette ($63.00 for 0.15 oz.) is a new, limited edition palette for spring. The eyeshadow formula feels different than their standard, permanent eyeshadow formula but similar to the formula used in the limited edition holiday palettes–more in the vein of MAC Extra Dimension and NARS Dual Intensity–but I couldn’t find anything from Dior that indicated these are actually wet/dry, though for your perusal, I swatched them both dry (left) and damp (right), so this review only covers dry application. I think that the eyeshadows perform much better damp, though, or with primer, as they run crumbly and/or powdery, so they tended to look a little dry or uneven applied to the lid as-is.

Rose Garden #1 is a light, chartreuse green with warm, yellow undertones and a pearly sheen. It had mostly opaque color payoff with a soft but dusty consistency that tended to sheer out on the lid. It lasted for seven hours on me. Make Up For Ever D316 Crystalline Pinky Green (DC, $21.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Make Up For Ever I318 Linen Khaki (DC, $21.00) is less shimmery, lighter (95% similar). Urban Decay Acid Rain (LE, $19.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Cle de Peau Champagne Supernova #4 (P, ) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). MAC Juxt (DC, $16.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Make Up For Ever I330 Linden Green (DC, $21.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). Dior Emerald #4 (LE, ) is darker (85% similar). Dior Peacock (434) Eyeshadow #5 (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). MAC Floridazzle (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery, darker, more muted (85% similar). Aveda Lemongrass (LE, $14.00) is more shimmery, darker (85% similar). bareMinerals Wicked (P, ) is more shimmery, darker (85% similar). Tarina Tarantino Secret Pond (LE, ) is darker (80% similar). MAC Rockin' Rebel (LE, ) is darker, more muted (80% similar). Dior Peacock (434) Eyeshadow #1 (LE, ) is darker (80% similar). MAC Green Clean #2 (LE, ) is more shimmery, darker, brighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Rose Garden #2 is a light-medium, sunny yellow with strong, warm undertones and a frosted finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a lightly dusty texture that applied decently but could have used help from a primer to maintain intensity and evenness. This shade started to fade after six and a half hours of wear. Dior Emerald #1 (LE, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). theBalm #12 (P, $6.50) is darker (90% similar). LORAC Enchanting (LE, $19.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). theBalm Snobby (P, $16.00) is lighter (85% similar). Hello Kitty Mimmy (LE, ) is more shimmery, lighter (85% similar). MAC Lemon Tart (P, $16.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). MAC Double Feature #1 #1 (LE, $16.00) is darker, brighter (85% similar). Make Up For Ever S404 Straw Yellow (DC, $21.00) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). Fyrinnae Banana Mochi (P, $6.75) is darker, brighter (80% similar). Smashbox Bellini Bling (P, ) is more shimmery, lighter (80% similar). Wet 'n' Wild Comfort Zone #5 (P, ) is lighter (80% similar). MAC Bright Sunshine (DC, $16.00) is less shimmery, darker, brighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Rose Garden #3 is a light-medium, icy pink with cool undertones and a metallic sheen. It had semi-opaque color coverage dry, which was also on the dusty side with a tendency to sheer out when applied. The color wore well for seven hours on me. Chanel Tisse Rhapsodie #2 (LE, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). Too Faced Sugar Coated (LE, $16.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Too Faced Pink Pearl (LE, $16.00) is darker (95% similar). Urban Decay Lily (LE, $19.00) is darker (95% similar). Sephora Rose Quartz (LE, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). Make Up For Ever I872 Pearly Pink (DC, $21.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Pat McGrath Astral Ghost Orchid (P, ) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). MAC Young Venus (LE, $20.00) is darker (90% similar). Ciate Baby (LE, ) is less shimmery, lighter, warmer (90% similar). MAC Ready to Party (P, $20.00) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Feminine Wiles (LE, $20.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). MAC Joy & Laughter #1 (P, $21.00) is darker (85% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Rose Garden #4 is a light, muted beige with warm undertones and a satiny sheen. It had decent pigmentation and wasn’t too dusty or too firm. The color lasted for six and a half hours on me. MAC Smokeluxe #1 (P, ) is more shimmery (95% similar). IT Cosmetics Transforming Pearl (P, ) is cooler (95% similar). MAC Pretty (LE, $16.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Tarte Chantilly Lace (LE, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). YSL Saharienne #1 (P, ) is warmer (90% similar). Sephora Desert Rose (P, $10.00) is warmer (90% similar). Rose Garden #5 is a slightly muted, dark purple-taupe with cooler undertones and a soft, frosted finish. It appeared a little browner and less purple when applied dry, and it appears warmer as it is blended out. The texture was soft, lightly dusty, but blendable and still applied smoothly, even if not opaque or particularly buildable. The color started to fade after seven hours of wear. MAC Ebony Blend #3 (LE, ) is lighter (95% similar). Milani Bella Taupe (05) (P, $4.49) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). As I mentioned, the formula is comparable to products like NARS Dual Intensity, MAC Extra Dimension, Estee Lauder Gelee, and so forth. The powder has a smooth, blendable consistency that isn’t too firm or too soft, and it has a “dryness” to it that I feel but doesn’t appear on the skin (it’s not powdery or caky on). The amount and size of shimmer is just shy of emphasizing pores on me, but it may emphasize pores on someone who feels like they have larger pores–it is a more metallic one–though it can always be applied with a fan brush for less impact. The color lasted for eight hours before fading on me.
