Bite Beauty Kale Amuse Bouche Lipstick

Bite Beauty Whiskey Amuse Bouche Lipstick ($26.00 for 0.15 oz.) is a deep, reddish brown with subtle, warm undertones and a satin finish. It had mostly opaque color coverage with a creamy, lightweight texture that clung enough that it didn’t slide around but not to the point where it was uncomfortable or drying. The color wore well for over six hours and was very lightly hydrating. Fenty Beauty PMS (P, $18.00) is lighter (95% similar). Coloured Raine Huntress (P, $17.00) is cooler, less glossy (95% similar). ColourPop Double Espresso (P, $10.00) is darker (95% similar). ColourPop Friends (P, $10.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). MAC Digging It (P, $19.00) is warmer (95% similar). NARS Aya (LE, $34.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Urban Decay Blackmail (DC, $18.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). ColourPop Docs (P, $8.00) is cooler (90% similar). Bite Beauty Kale Amuse Bouche Lipstick ($26.00 for 0.15 oz.) is a deep, blackened green with subtle, cool undertones and a satin finish. It was intensely pigmented with a creamy, smooth consistency that applied beautifully. I was really impressed by the level of coverage as well as the evenness of application, as deeper shades like this often become a mess. It’s very dark, but it’s still noticeably green–you definitely get that tint and flash in person under an assortment of lighting types. It wore well for over six hours, was lightly hydrating, and faded evenly. Bite Beauty #052 (P, $18.00) is more muted, cooler, less glossy (95% similar). ColourPop Brucie (LE, $7.00) is less shimmery, lighter (85% similar). Makeup Geek Twerk (LE, $12.00) is lighter, less glossy (90% similar). MAC Mean Green Machine (LE, $19.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). Urban Decay Junkie (DC, $18.00) is more shimmery, lighter, warmer (80% similar). Dolce and Gabbana Smeraldo (LE, $33.00) is more shimmery, lighter, less pigmented (80% similar). MAC Deep with Envy (LE, $19.00) is lighter (80% similar). Maybelline Smoky Jade (P, $7.49) is lighter, cooler, less glossy (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Bite Beauty Squid Ink Amuse Bouche Lipstick ($26.00 for 0.15 oz.) is a deep, blackened navy blue with cool undertones and a satin finish. It had mostly opaque coverage, but it was the less-pigmented shade out of the newer releases. The texture was creamy, fairly lightweight, and glided on well with mostly even application. This shade lasted for six hours and left behind a pinky-purple stain, while the formula was lightly hydrating overall. I didn’t experience feathering, but I did find this shade harder to apply with precision from the tube. NYX Go Rogue (P, $7.50) is more shimmery, darker, less glossy (85% similar). Anastasia Nocturnal (P, $20.00) is lighter, less glossy (85% similar). Fenty Beauty Clapback (P, $18.00) is less glossy (90% similar). Make Up For Ever C603 (DC, $22.00) is lighter (90% similar). Smashbox Deep (P, $21.00) is lighter, more muted, cooler (85% similar). Bite Beauty #054 (P, $18.00) is more muted, less glossy (85% similar). MAC Nico Kiss (LE, $18.50) is lighter, glossier (85% similar). Illamasqua Disciple (P, $24.00) is more shimmery, lighter (85% similar). MAC Young Attitude (P, $21.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). Maybelline Midnight Blue (DC, $7.49) is warmer (80% similar). Urban Decay Heroine (DC, $18.00) is lighter, more muted (80% similar). KVD Beauty Poe (DC, $21.00) is more shimmery, lighter, more muted (80% similar). ColourPop JV (LE, $7.00) is less shimmery, lighter, warmer (80% similar). KVD Beauty Woolf (P, $20.00) is lighter, less glossy (80% similar). Guerlain #333 (P, $36.00) is less pigmented (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

FORMULA OVERVIEW | Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick ($26.00 for 0.15 oz.) is supposed to have “bold, creamy color” with “extreme moisture, soft texture, and creamy wear.” The majority of the range is very pigmented–typically opaque with one pass–with a few shades being semi-opaque but usually buildable. All 34 shades are shimmer-free and vary being a soft satin finish to a natural finish (light shine but not glossy). The consistency is very lightly creamy to lightly creamyu with some shades requiring light-medium pressure and can pull the lip a bit when gliding it across the lips, though the color doesn’t appear ragged and the bullet itself doesn’t feel stiff (while other shades applied without tugging, so check individual shade reviews!) The majority of the shades I’ve tested have been lightly hydrating to non-drying and fairly comfortable to wear for the long-haul. They wear longer than average, from four to eight hours, depending on the intensity and propensity of the shade to stain.

It’s getting harder to ignore Kale and Squid Ink every time I look at them. What’s a girl to do? The boldest lips I’ve ever rocked were Cruella by NARS and Urban Decay After Dark! Haha!

eclipse Avatar

This makes me so happy. The formulas and colours are glorious. And I’m so glad that “unusual” lip shades (blues/greens) are becoming more mainstream!

Wildviolette Avatar

My biggest takeaway from this (aside from wanting that Whiskey!) is that I need to immediately purchase that killer MAC eyeshadow quad you’re wearing.

Lani Avatar

Squid ink the most appropriate color names I’ve seen in a while, wow! Not colors I’d wear but they’re gorgeous and it’s great to see almost-blacks in different colors!

Nancy T Avatar

Wow, Whiskey is stunning! Definitely gives off a sepia photo effect! However, I already own, and adore my tube of MAC Deep Love. So, I would be more inclined to seek out a permanent replacement if or when I ever use it up.

And then there is Kale….OMG! I haven’t one clue where I would ever wear this in AZ, but I absolutely must get my paws on this hella BEAUTY!!! I never thought I could fall for such a lush, almost black, green lipstick, but this looks insanely good!

Amy Avatar

I don’t even know where I’d EVER wear Squid Ink and Kale but I just want them both..

Also they look like they’re packed with glitter in pictures

Christine Avatar

They definitely don’t have glitter, but I had a hard time distinguishing whether they just had a sheen or if there was very fine pearl in them as well. I think there is very fine pearl in them, because they dance a little in the light (vs. a more universal sheen).

Andrea Avatar

I want all of these, but whiskey reminds me a lot of melt’s catsuit which I already own. Does anyone know how close the two are? I know the finishes are different and I usually prefer a matte lip but sometimes a shinier finish is nice. Maybe I’ll just get it anyway, at this point I could never get through all of the lipsticks I own but I can’t seem to stop buying them.

Chacha Avatar

Kale! Kale! Kale! beautiful green! Maybe that color make me feel powerful too! lol Iam sure with it that my husband will be very nice in front of my lips 🙂
iam little tired to see all this Bite beauty beautifuls lipsticks because they’re not available in France 🙁

Ev Avatar

These look awesome! Did you find that they emphasized the yellowness of teeth? If so how much? Sorry I’m not really sure from just looking at the photos!

Helene Avatar

I was sort of hoping that Kale would be really, really bad 🙂 It would have made the fact that it is so hard to get anything from Bite here less maddening. I might try Amazon. Or order from Sephora US to a friend in England and have him send it on, if they are allowed to send lipsticks through the UK Post, or whatever it is called.
I guess I have a bit of checking up to do.

Carly Avatar

Kale is so wonderful. I always thought that if I could make it to the Bite Lip Lab, I would have them make me a blackened green. It’s like they read my mind! All three of these shades are right up my alley.

Katherine T. Avatar

Wow, I’m impressed!! These are really hard colors to get right, and BITE knocked them out of the ballpark ! I like Whiskey and Squid Ink. Kale is also gorgeous, but not sure if I can rock green lipstick with my yellow undertones

Katie Avatar

I don’t really go for brown lipsticks usually, but Whiskey is gorgeous (and I love the name)! I’m also really impressed by how nice Kale turned out!

Hanna Avatar

Oh lord. We just bought a house and all new appliances and I do NOT have the budget for these beauties. And yet…

I will try to stick to just Kale as I have nothing green that’s dark like this. Justification.

Heather Avatar

Gah! I am so torn on these! My workplace doesn’t have a dress code so fun hair/makeup/outfits abound, but my position requires me to meet with other professionals at a moment’s notice. How easy were these to remove?

Marina Avatar

I bought Squid Ink and Kale (along with Lavender Jam) the other day and I LOVE them. I haven’t gotten much extended wear in yet, so your review is so encouraging, Christine! After I tried on Squid Ink, my boyfriend told me it is his all-time favorite color on me! I am so excited to wear these more.

Ginny Avatar

Kale is just mind blowing. Definitely will get that in the fall–my first green. Squid Ink is very tempting and I’ve yet to buy a blue lipstick… but it is pretty similar to Kale in tone. Maybe I will go for Technopagan as my first blue 🙂

C.B.-P. Avatar

Was so excited when I saw your sneak peek initially since I’m an unconventional colors girl. Black is my go-to lip color, closely followed by blue, then green, so, Squid Ink and Kale looked right up my alley.
Unfortunately, they look way too blackened once set. :/ Much prefer the color distributions in the arm swatches.
Oddly enough, I’m loving all of the swatches for Thistle.
Definitely getting Lavender Jam either way…. and possibly Taro.

Jocelyn Avatar

I just purchased Whiskey and cannot WAIT to wear it! It looks so amazing on you, Christine! I literally just received it in the mail today! LOL! I am so drawn to these kinds of colors. I too own MAC Prince Noir, Too Faced Chocolate Cherries, MAC Viva Glam Ariana Grande and MAC Deep Love. And yes, they all seem similar but they definitely have different tones about them and finishes. For some reason I think Whiskey is going to become my favorite out of all of them!

Jen Avatar

hey Christine!.. you look fabulous in these lipsticks..!. In some light the lipsticks look flat.. in some they look pearly and gorgeous! Tell me, how noticeable is this pearly effect in person??

Amy Avatar

Man I was really hoping that these would get bad reviews so I’d have a good reason not to buy them. But I just cannot stop staring at Kale and Squid Ink. They look like they read pretty dark/black from a distance, which just makes them even more appealing.

Jenn Avatar

Never thought I’d buy much less wear a green lipstick, but Kale arrived today and I put it on immediately. Stunning color, great formula as Christine said, and it didn’t make my teeth look yellow! (My big fear.) I’m gonna be rocking this and Squid Ink a lot this summer.

Does anyone know how long these lipsticks stay good for? I’m wondering if they’ll go off quicker because of all the natural ingredients. Small price to pay for the excellent formula tho.

Mimielle Avatar

Kale and Squid Ink look like really amazing colors but I guess I’ve gotten spoiled with the cleaner edge lines and long wear of the darker liquid lipsticks staying perfect when applied with a brush. I have KVD Poe and same deal, love it dearly but I’m often too lazy to keep it perfect. Since liquid lippies don’t dry my lips overmuch, I’ve taken to wearing those in dark colors then dusting a smidge of Sugarpill Lumi or UD Aura eyeshadow (either side is fun) over them after dry-down to mimic the ‘shine’ and give a bit of opalescence.

Alecto Avatar

I really like all three of them (especially the near-blacks). I’ll likely get all three of them. They’ll be my first Bite Beauty products.

I was initially thinking that Whiskey would be close to Colourpop Pitch, but screen-side comparisons make Pitch seem a lot “cooler” and more chocolate by contrast. Not a dupe. Yea!

Monique Avatar

Ugh…. Squid Ink and Kale are speaking to my inner goth chick. I can wear these to work without a problem (well not sure how the CEO feels about this dark of lipstick but she didn’t or the VPs didn’t drown upon my dark Melted Matte last week so we shall see) otherwise I’ll wear them to my Sunday Job and just out and about!!

Marie Avatar

This is a really stupid question, but for the swatches, why are there two swatches each where one of them looks like it has more of an iridescent, glittery, shift? Did I miss something where you mentioned that you were wearing something over them to make it look like that? Thanks Christine! Lovely swatches, as usual.

Audre Avatar

Thank you for your lovely reviews, as always. I picked up Kale and Squid Ink yesterday at Sephora (Kale was already selling out). I couldn’t wait to test drive Kale and so I wore it out last night. I definitely got some double takes and lots of compliments! I found I had to reapply it regularly to maintain the intensity of its dark color and its opaqueness, so perhaps a lipliner and/or primer might help. But it was beautiful overall.

2613 Avatar

Kale is my new signature lip color, so much so that I boight 2 tubes! I have green hair and it goes just perfectlg with my pale, very pink-toned complexion – I find it reads brighter and greener on me than it does on you, which i like. I also picked up Lavender Jam and Squid Ink, both of which work great on me!
