Cool Brown

Anastasia Cool Brown Matte Lipstick ($18.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a muted, dark brown with subtle, rosy undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation in a single layer, and the color applied evenly to the lips, even though it did tug as I glided the lipstick across my lips. It had a firm, dense consistency but managed not to drag or apply raggedly, and this particular shade was even firmer/stiffer than others in the line-up. My lips were fairly smooth but this seemed to emphasize the texture of my lips when there was so little to emphasize. On me, it lasted for five hours and was non-drying but felt very lightweight.

The formula is supposed to have “full-pigment” with a “smooth, ultra-matte finish.” Since the description was a little light, I also watched the brand’s video, where the formula is also supposed to be comfortable to apply and not settle in lip lines. The best aspects of the formula are how lightweight it felt on–almost like nothing on, so despite being more matte and denser, not heavy or clingy–and that most shades have been non-drying (so far).

There has been some transfer, and the finish is mostly matte but not “ultra-matte” (certainly not as flat or matte as their liquid lipsticks, as an example). Some shades have emphasized my lip lines from a texture standpoint or due to color settling into them, but it depended on the shade. The wear has ranged from four and a half hours to eight hours, and some of the richer shades can survive a moderate meal and definitely drinking coffee. I found the texture to be the drawback; the lipstick is incredibly firm and dense with little to creaminess, which resulted in an application that tugged and pulled on the lips. It was also the type of texture that caught on flakes, so regular exfoliation is key. There were a few shades that were creamier and thicker on the lips, which were more comfortable to apply, but the majority were quite firm. (They also did not get softer with use.)

Dusty Mauve

Anastasia Dusty Mauve Matte Lipstick ($18.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a dark, purple mauve with neutral undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had good pigmentation–just shy of truly full coverage–with a dense, firm texture that tugged on my lips noticeably when applying and took moderate pressure to glide across the lips. The odd part of the formula was just that it actually felt very lightweight, the color went on evenly, and didn’t feel drying over time. It wore well for five and a half hours on me.

Rust

Anastasia Rust Matte Lipstick ($18.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a deep, muted brown with subtle, warm red undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had good color coverage in a single stroke, though the texture seemed more prone to emphasizing the natural texture of my lips. It had a thicker, slightly creamier feel compared to other shades in the range but still was a firmer, denser lipstick that tugged slightly as I applied it to my lips. The color stayed on well for six hours but pulled into my lip lines over time. It felt lightweight and non-drying while worn.

Hmmm, I wonder if I could pull off Dusty Mauve? I keep getting drawn to purplish lipsticks but have yet to find one that’s right for me. Looks lovely on you!

These new ABH lipsticks are so beautiful! Just seeing the words “dusty mauve” makes me drool. I own a ridiculous amount of these shades in different brands, but I still want more. I’m going to have to get all the willpower I can muster up to not buy these shades.

From my collection, these lipsticks these would be among my favorites in the dusty rose/mauve category (just counting mattes, satins, and comfort mattes):

– MAC in Twig and Mehr
– ColourPop Ultra Satin in Dopey
– Kat von D Everlasting in Lolita
– Kat von D Studded Kiss in Lovecraft (Magick is currently on its way to me!)
– Urban Decay in Backtalk

I know I’m forgetting some because I’m doing this from memory since I’m at work.

This set of shades has me feeling confused…at MYSELF. None of these are exactly wowing me, yet I see on the dupe list that I *already* have either very close shades in my stash, or that something that has been on my WL forever and a day! Hmmm?
Which tells me that it’s not the colors themselves that aren’t bowling me over, but possibly the finish? More ?

Uh oh, looks like I need to get Dusty Mauve – no dupes! Also love Cool Brown (although it looks warm to me) and Rust , reminds me fall is right around the corner

Genevieve,

Buy it in store if you can – I ordered from Sephora and got a bad one. It’s dirty brown and hard to apply. I didn’t save the packaging – now I’m stuck with it. I thought something was off – mine has no red in it at all. Save yourself some money and get a dupe….

Sorry, Christina! Rust is the one that I was referring to! I got excited I guess when I clicked on the link for the color and didn’t think to write the color (Rust) and forgot. I hope you get a good one!!! Mine is bad. Thanks for the tip with the liner though. I’ll try it. I hadn’t thought about trying to change it up with that. Adding a reddish liner would help.

Thanks,
Gina

Hi, mine does NOT look like this at all! Mine is a dirty brown. I was quite disappointed in it when I received it, there is no red hue to it at all. I thought it was just me – and I was so excited to receive it, I did not save the package so I cannot return it! The texture is flat, the application is very firm. I must have gotten a bad one. Dang!! I’m so disappointed! Christina, do you think there is anything I can do?
Thanks,
Gina

I’m not sure what shade you’re referring to?

If you have a liner or another lip color, you could try to layer the two or add a little oil or lip balm to your lips to soften the texture a bit!

Depending on the retailer, you could still ask if there’s any way to return!

I’m so sorry Christina I just now saw this. It is the ABH lipstick in Rust. It is a very flat matte brown. I’m sure it is a bad one. Its way too dark brown. I’m sure you would rate mine an F!!! LOL. It’s hard as a brick. I didn’t save the box either. I’m stuck with it. Oh well, my bad. I did what you said though and tried a reddish liner and it did help some. Thanks for the tip. It’s just a bad lippie.
