MAC Chestnut Lipglass, Lipstick, Nail Lacquer

MAC Chestnut Lipstick ($14.50 for 0.10 oz.) was inspired by the top-selling lip liner, along with a Lipglass ($14.50 for 0.17 fl. oz.) and Nail Lacquer ($16.00 for 0.34 fl. oz.) to complement. This shade is part of the North American portion of the collection, so it will be available at all locations and online. All three shades are limited edition. Chestnut is described as “rich chocolate brown.”

When the two lip products are layered, the result is a rich, glossy chocolate brown with strong red undertones. The color coverage is mostly opaque, but there’s a hint of translucency. The nail lacquer is deeper, browner, and because it’s so opaque, the red undertones are less noticeable, but the shades are fairly close together–you’ll just see the effect that texture and opacity have on the end result more here.

Chestnut Lipglass is a red-toned brown with semi-opaque color coverage. It does settle into lip lines a bit, and because it is such a dark color, the unevenness is more noticeable. Admittedly, I haven’t come across too many rich brown glosses, so the closest I could think of was MAC A Different Groove, which is much sheerer and less red-toned. (8, 9, 8, 8.5, 3.5, 4; B-)

Chestnut Lipstick is a warm chocolate brown with red undertones (but subtler than the gloss). It has a satin finish. It applies mostly opaque. MAC Seeds of Desire is more burgundy. CoverGirl Enamor is redder. NYX Very Berry is a bit lighter. MAC Film Noir is pretty close, perhaps a touch less red-toned. MAC Underworld is lighter and redder. (9, 9, 9, 9, 4, 4; B+)

Chestnut Nail Lacquer is a luxurious, deep chocolate brown with a cream finish. It’s opaque in two coats. The consistency wasn’t too thick or too thin, and it applied evenly and fluidly without trouble. Rescue Beauty Lounge Au Chocolat is darker and more burgundy. Barielle Unraveled Rust is very close, perhaps a touch darker. MAC Dim the Lights is also very close. (10, 10, 10, 9, 5, 4; A)

MAC Lipsticks are vanilla-scented but taste-free. Satin finishes like Chestnut typically wear four to six hours on me, with deeper shades like this one wearing closer to six hours. This particular finish is not particularly moisturizing, but I don’t find it drying either. MAC Lipglasses are also vanilla-scented but taste-free. They are very sticky and have a thick, borderline-goopy consistency. If you prefer gel-like, cushion-y glosses that feel lightweight on, I don’t recommend MAC Lipglass. Because of the tackier texture, MAC Lipglasses do tend to wear a full four hours on me, with some of the darker shades lasting up to six hours (with mostly the color lingering at that point).

Bravo Christine for somehow making this lip stick look good. This colour still seems a bit of a 90’s-ish style of colour and definatly something I’m going to pass on. l/s & l/g are a big no for me. Brown nail polish is a dime a dozen, and likely to have a better formula & less streaking with another brand. Slightly disappointed this time 🙁

I was going to say this looks like my Seeds of Desire which I did not get a back up of and is my favorite fall winter lipstick ever.  Oh goodness.  I’m getting this because it looks close enough for me and this will make me feel better.  Ha!

Wow, I didn’t expect to like that, but I really do. I think this lipstick and nail polish would look really great in the Fall.

It shouldnt work as a lip colour but it looks beautiful on you, brings out the lighter tones in your eyes. Its a shame the lipglass is a little streaky but Im still gonna put these on my list.  Its a lovely collection.

I’ll never be able to pull off such an edgy color although I think it looks absolutely stunning and rich. I love the lipstick and the polish – not of a fan of the lipgloss, which looks kind of uneven to me.

Those dark browns surprisingly don’t look overpowering on you, Christine.  I think they would be stunning on someone who is dark skinned like Octavia Spencer.

Beautiful color on you, Christine!  I wish I could make this work with my skin but I think I would look dead or too goth.  Love the nail color!

Great review, Christine!  Thanks so much.  This is a really interesting inspiration – Chestnut is one of my HG lip liners from MAC, I’m just not sure I need a lipgloss, lipstick, and nail lacquer to match.  Hmmm…

Wow! The nail polish is beautiful, and so is the lipstick, although I must admit I wouldn’t have thought to try it on as it looks soooo brown! But it looks gorgeous once on- thanks for the tip!

Colour me shocked! Shocked! This is exquisite. I would never have even considered it but for your photos. It’s the first time I’ve ever actually sat UP for a Mac product and looked at it slack-jawed. I want ALL of it, even the blasted lipgloss with the uneven finish.  It’s like Chanel’s Vamp but even richer, brighter, more luxurious and sexy. I can totally see wearing all this with simple, golden shimmery blush while lightly tanned, the hair pulled back and sleekly gelled into a chignon, and wearing loose white clothing with chunky gold jewellery. Or wearing it in the fall with rich russets, golds and oranges.  Oh my GOD, I’m in such LUST, I need to lie down to recuperate from the shock of it all!!!

 @Christine (Temptalia)
I seriously can’t stop thinking about this colour. This never happens to me with MAC products; only NARS has ever triggered that sort of immediate lust. So, now, I’m sitting here — with an online cart full of this entire collection (and some of the Morange one) — wondering if I really dare buy things sight unseen (esp. that intense orange! All, without personally testing it, and with my normally despised lipglosses no less!!!). I suppose I could try to get over my dislike of the mall (esp. on a weekend!) & just get my tush over there tomorrow. But they may not even have it there and be sold out; then again, I hate returning things and I’d have to pay the return shipping. Do you see what a tizzy I’m in?

Maybe I’ll just wait to see what additional temptations you offer us tomorrow. No, no, must resist. Must be good. Must not think about it. No, I’ll be like Scarlett O’Hara! Stick my head in the sand and think about it tomorrow. LOL. Christine, I swear, you’re like the sirens whose irresistible song almost lured poor Odysseus to his death on the rocks!  ;-P

Oh my gosh, I wish I could pull of brown lipstick or lipgloss because they are just beautiful.  I already have a few brown nail polishes that are this exact shade but the lip gloss is to die for.

Veronica Avatar

This is quite beautiful.  If my skin was a little more tan, I think I’d go for it, but I suspect I’m just too pale to pull it off.  You look lovely, though.  🙂

xamyx Avatar

I think I’m likely to buy this trio. How is the wear on the polish? It’s been years since I tried MAC polish, and it flaked almost immediately, so I’ve been hesitant to try.

xamyx Avatar

@Christine (Temptalia) Thanks. It’s been like 15 years since I tried MAC polish, and the two I got were so awful, I actually shied away from the brand altogether. I’ll probably chance these, since I *really* love the color. I can totally see pairing this with NARS Bellissima for and black mascara…

o0oo This lipstick could be used to mix up a lot of my other bright and peppier shades for that 30’s vibe or used straight for that 90’s vibe. Beautiful color!
