Midnight Wasabi
Fenty Beauty Midnight Wasabi Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipstick ($18.00 for 0.06 oz.) is a muted, medium-dark green with subtle, warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. It was richly pigmented and delivered even, smooth coverage in a single pass. The lipstick was lightweight, creamy without being heavy or thick, and never tugged on my lips as I applied the product. I had a bit of color sink into my deeper lip lines initially, which worsened as time went on, though I could barely detect the settling after five hours of wear from a normal viewing distance. It was neither drying nor hydrating on me.

Formula Overview

It's supposed to have a "petal-soft matte finish" with "mega rich color" that is long-wearing and will not bleed or feather. They are creamy, smooth, and velvety without being heavy. The majority of shades applied evenly across the lips, never skipped, and didn't get into my lip lines. I do not normally experience feathering/bleeding, and I did not experience either with this range.
Most of the shades were very pigmented with true, one-stroke pigmentation, which was particularly impressive for some of the more non-traditional shades in the line-up. They're a soft matte--matte without being flat but not truly glossy or shiny--and have good wear time (four to eight hours, depending on the shade) and were mostly non-drying.
Worth noting is that these are in a slim-style bullet, which means that they don't contain as much as traditional lipsticks do--these contain 0.06 oz. and retail for $18.00, which yields a cost of $300.00/oz. If you're not someone who tends to finish their lipsticks, paying less is often a better "value" than paying more and not using what you paid for.
A few comparisons: NARS Audacious Lipstick ($242.86 oz., $34.00/0.14 oz.), Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick ($173.33/oz., $26.00/0.15 oz.), Pat McGrath Matte/LuxeTrance Lipstick ($271.43/oz., $38.00/0.14 oz.), Marc Jacobs Le Marc Lip Creme ($250.00/oz., $30.00/0.12 oz.). Fenty's slimmer tube seems to contain less than the average slim-style tube, too (typically 0.07 oz. to 0.09 oz. but rarely below 0.07 oz.).

Ya Dig
Fenty Beauty Ya Dig Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipstick ($18.00 for 0.06 oz.) is a bright, cornflower blue with cool, almost violet undertones and a satin finish. It had excellent pigmentation with a smooth, creamy consistency that skated across my lips with ease. The downside was that the color seemed to pull apart at my lip lines, so it did not appear as even or as smooth as desired. It wore comfortably for five hours on me with slight settling into my lip lines over time.

Clapback
Fenty Beauty Clapback Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipstick ($18.00 for 0.06 oz.) is a deep, muted navy blue with cool undertones and a semi-matte finish. The consistency was smooth, lightweight, and creamy enough not to drag or skip on the lips. The lipstick delivered nearly opaque pigmentation that went on evenly for the most part. There was still room for improvement but for this type of shade, it applied impressively. It wore well for five and a half hours and left a purplish stain behind. The formula was neither drying nor hydrating on me.

Yesss!! The three most fun ones first. Glad to see that you didn’t think Clapback was too drying and that it had opaque, even coverage. Okay, definitely getting it now. It’s a wannabe cybergoth’s dream color, haha.
Haha, they were the easiest to review actually since they don’t have dozens of dupes 😉
Even though Midnight Wasabi and Ya Dig aren’t my thing, I am so happy to see that Rihanna got them right! That in itself is very exciting!
The one shade of the 3 that I actually love is Clapback. I’d love it to wear underneath certain shades to give them depth, or to use in an ombre lip look.
I liked the mix of shades in the initial launch!
Stunning shades for the brave!
True 🙂
Hey, the green and lighter blue look really good on you. Kudos to Rihanna for creating some flattering unsual tones for lippies.
can’t type..unusual too
Thank you, Wendy!! 🙂
They got these shades right, they look so smooth and pigmented! And not dupable definitely! ?
I like that it seems as though they put as much effort and care into the unusual colors as they did the guaranteed-seller colors! I got a deluxe sample of Griselda and I love how lightweight and comfortable these lipsticks feel.
Happy to hear you’re enjoying Griselda!
Colors like Ya Dig can be so, so hard to get right. But then again, it’s Rihanna, the lip queen. Thank you for getting the funkier lipsticks out first Christine! These are all gorgeous.
They can be tough to do!
Midnight wasabi was one that I have been really excited about, and I’m so glad it performed well! Clapback also seemed like an interesting shade, although I already own a dark blue (Echo from KvD) that I don’t wear as often as I did a few years ago.
Echo is definitely close!
midnight wasabi & clapback look so good with the eye look you created !
i purchased 3 shades the week they launched: clapback, shawty, & freckle fiesta .
i wish they were a true matte finish , but i guess it makes sense for them to be more satin since they are described to be a plush matte . i have to note , i was extremely disappointed at how lightweight the packaging is . they didn’t have any weight to them at all , thus making them feel cheap . that surprised me given how luxurious the stunna lip paint looks/feels . i know it’s a different product , but still . maybe my expectations were too high because i was really looking forward to her finally releasing some lipsticks . ?
Maybe they’re designed to be light for travel? I know that the Stix stick together to make them easy to find in a makeup bag so maybe that’s why?
I have seen these on all skintones and they look so good on everyone!!!! So tempted to get them! I already have greens and blues but these are so pretty! Glad they performed well too!!!
They have been looking lovely on others!
They look pretty a,along on you too!!!
Amazing ugh typo
These were the three I was most interested in, so thanks for reviewing them first! I’m a bit worried about ‘neither drying nor hydrating’ though, because in the past, things like that have been too annoying to wear for more than an hour or so anytime but the dead of summer (Bite Deluxe Lipsticks in Boysenberry comes to mind).
Also, while it may not be as much product as most, it’s still twice as much as the Hourglass slim, and the price is just a little more than half, so there’s that.
No problem, Reka!
I have heard some say they’re drying, though from what I’ve mentally collated, it seems like most find them comfortable.
I absolutely love these colors, great for weekend wear!
Yay!
Since these are permanent, I will probably cave and buy Midnight Wasabi sometime before the year is up.
I’m so happy they came out with permanent shades!
They are getting colour right!!! I don’t need any of them right now but Clapback is on my list for sure for the next Sephora sale.
It was so nice to see!
Wow!! These are hard colors to formulate, so impressed with the scores!
They are!
I’m happy both Midnight Wasabi and Clapback did well! I kept my eye on both for a friend. She has Bite’s Kale and Squid Ink, but was looking at these anyways.
I think Midnight Wasabi is definitely different enough from Kale to justify (the differences between Clapback and Squid Ink are less so).
You look like a superhero in all of them 😉
Thank you, Ginny!
These look like the type of formula that would apply much better with a lip brush. I understand why you use them straight from the bullet for reviews… not every customer would want to have to go through the effort of using a tool to apply lipstick.
Interesting – I didn’t feel like they applied poorly directly from the tube at all. Definitely not a formula I felt a lip brush was necessary at all, personally!
omg i love these. Especially Ya Dig which is so unique, i find the dupes are too light / close to white for me. but Ya Dig is perfect. I recently got Urban Decay UV-B on sale at Sephora and it kinda reminds me of that, but maybe it’s different enough to justify a buy 😉
Wow, these look amazing! Clapback is a great color, especially.
I keep striking out with Fenty Beauty! I purchased three of these and now all have been returned. They are far too dry for my lips and too bright for my everyday use and I have enough fun colors. UGH I will keep trying Fenty as I know Rihanna is going to make something that will work for me, I just know it.
I tried all of the colors….the blue looked good on me but I already have a great blue and green and purple like that UGH
Clap Back is awesome!
