Chanel Affresco Les 9 Ombres Multi-Effects Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Affresco
Chanel Affresco Les 9 Ombres Multi-Effects Eyeshadow Palette ($70.00 for 0.22 oz.) is a new, limited edition eyeshadow palette for spring/summer and features nine shades. I was extremely surprised that it actually performed well–Chanel has not typically impressed me with their larger eyeshadow palettes, and then given the brighter hues on this collection’s palette, I was even more wary–and wasn’t as expensive as I would have thought (for Chanel). The majority of the eyeshadows were soft, pigmented (semi-opaque to opaque), blendable, and long-wearing (around eight hours).

Affresco #1
Affresco #1 is a medium, peachy orange with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque color payoff with a soft, velvety texture that wasn’t too powdery nor was it too dense or firmly pressed in the pan. It blended out beautifully and lasted for eight and a half hours on me.

Affresco #2
Affresco #2 is a light-medium brown with warm, yellow undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was fantastic, while the eyeshadow was blendable and easy to work with on bare skin as the texture was substantial enough to adhere well without primer but wasn’t too soft or too firm either. It wore well for eight and a half hours on me before fading.

Affresco #3
Affresco #3 is a deep, blackened brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It seemed to be more prone to absorbing the natural oils on my skin, so it didn’t appear as matte as other shades. The consistency was firmer in the pan, so it was drier and took more effort to blend out, though it was workable overall. This shade had semi-opaque coverage that was buildable and stayed on well for eight hours.

Affresco #4
Affresco #4 is a medium-dark, blue-leaning teal with a frosted finish. The color payoff was opaque in a single stroke, while the consistency was smooth, soft without being powdery, and blendable on the lid. It applied evenly and wore well for almost nine hours on me.

Affresco #5
Affresco #5 is a medium green with warmer, yellow undertones and a metallic sheen. The pigmentation was rich and opaque, and the eyeshadow had a soft, blendable texture that wasn’t too thick or too thin, so it adhered well to bare skin but still was easy to work with for even application. It lasted for eight and a half hours on me.

Affresco #6
Affresco #6 is a medium gold with warm, orange undertones and a pearly shimmer. It had good color coverage, though it wasn’t opaque, and it had a drier, dustier texture that made it more prone to sheering out (unintentionally). The eyeshadow wore well for seven and a half hours on me.

Affresco #7 is a light pink-peach with subtle, warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a soft, lightly dusty consistency that kicked up some excess product in the pan and sheered out too readily in practice. The color stayed on well for seven and a half hours on me.

Affresco #8 is a rich, deep brown with warm, red undertones and a pearly sheen. The eyeshadow was richly pigmented and had a smooth, moderately dense texture that wasn’t stiff but didn’t have any excess product kicked up in the pan either. Affresco #9
Affresco #9 is a blackened olive with subtle, warm undertones and flecks of blue and green pearl. It had good color payoff in a single layer, which was buildable to full coverage using two layers. The texture was soft, a smidgen powdery but not too dry nor did it sheer out too readily on the lid. It stayed on well for eight hours on me before fading noticeably.

Wow, I’m just as shocked as you these scored so well! I know their baked quads can be pretty good, but their pressed shadow kits have been rather dismal….uh oh, this could get dangerous for me wallet!
This looks very nice and I’d be tempted if Chanel was cruelty-free.
A good grade? Who knew? I really like the colour scheme of this. It would make a great palette for travel to do a few different looks. The way the pans are laid out bothers me on some level, though. I like them all neatly in rows. I think I could get over this if I find this before it sells out.
I actually love the pan layout, it’s the plastic applicators that I’d never use but still take up space that bother me!
I’m so shocked that this performed well. LOL! I haven’t bought Chanel eyeshadows in quite a while because of performance issues and color payoff (purely personal preference), so I’m amazed that this did so well. I like the fun summery vibe this palette is giving off and can see it transitioning well into the year.
I’m glad this scored so well – I honestly was expecting it to do quite poorly (based on some of the Chanel eye palettes in recent years). If this were a bit less “spendy”, I might buy it but as I have dupes for so many of the colours (except #9, which I really love) I will pass on this. I am really trying to be more disciplined in what I purchase.
I do love that green and am excited that a cruelty free dupe exists for that shade.
What a pretty palette! I didn’t expect such a high score, Chanel has been doing poorly lately. This looks like a game changer, I might have to give it a try!
I agree about the price. This is just a few more dollars than a quad or quint from Chanel or similar brands.
A stunning palette from Chanel, worthy of the brand and the price. A really lovely collection of shades, although personally I would have like shade 2 to be more taupish.
Gorgeous eye look Christine – that green eyeshadow really suits you.
This is a great year round palette with options for different seasons. I’m sure this will sell well. Always nice to see no duds!
I just realized it’s laid out in little trios like for winter, spring/summer, and fall. This is a very clever palette.
That’s a great observation! You’re really not helping to talk me out of buying this!
Lol if I didn’t have so much eyeshadow I would want it! I think this would be great for someone who likes a little color but only owns one or two eye palettes at a time. They work the heck out of that palette for a while and then look for a new one. For eyeshadow junkies, I don’t think there’s much to see here, other than to appreciate a well designed item.
Does that help LOL? I mean if you don’t have a huge e/s collection I might say go for it…..
Wow, they got one right. I think at this price point the performance is on par.
I am so happy to see that this Chanel palette scored such good reviews. I have already purchased my one luxury eye shadow palette for spring or I would be all over this. I couldn’t resist the Dior quint for spring/summer. Purples get me every time!!
I bought this with low expectations and thought it would probably be returned. Pleasantly surprised at the quality, the pigmentation and the wearability. A nice surprise for spring! Great job Chanel.
Well, there goes my no-buy for 2018! (Just kidding. I did allow for a couple of planned purchases, pending good reviews.)
Christine, do you know when this will be available at Chanel counters?
Sorry, I don’t!
The sneak peek swatches didn’t lie! This is a surprisingly nice pressed eyeshadow palette coming from Chanel!
This is really good, especially for Chanel. Well done.
Quite surprised at how well it did actually, still not purchasing it though. Lol.
I am inspired to pull out similar colors to form this palette and see what eye looks I can come up with.
Hallelujah! I’ve been waiting for your review on this, Christine, as yes, Chanel’s shadow palettes in recent years have been disappointing, so I’m really happy to see that you like this one 🙂 I’ll be calling my Chanel rep today to have one put aside for me; yay!
This palette is so, so pretty. I don’t need it and I’m never tempted by a Chanel palette but it’s nice to see that it performed well; especially at this price point. Lovely look you created with it, per usual.
This seems like the perfect travel companion for someone who likes color but likes more sophisticated shades.
I’m shocked! I don’t remember a palette of this similar type of design from Chanel doing so well since the Ombres Perlées palette. These colors aren’t ones I would wear particularly often, but now I’m almost tempted! Thanks for the review, as always, Christine.
